Systematic review of experiences and effects of integrating post-abortion family planning services into existing health system worldwide

Objective To systematic review and analyze the practices and effects of integrating post-abortion family planning （PAFP） services into existing health system worldwide in order to inform the future interventions to deliver PAFP in China. Methods A systematic search for relevant published and unpublished literature was conducted. Based on a set of criteria, citation and full text were screened, related data were extracted. Findings of included studies were reviewed and analyzed using a textual narrative approach to synthesis. Results A total of 28 studies were included in the synthesis. The studies were published between 1995 and 2008 and covered 20 countries. Some countries were in the stage of piloting post-abortion care （PAC）/PAFP intervention, while others were either from piloting to scaling up or examined how well a pilot PAC/PAFP intervention and resulting improvements were able to be maintained over the long term in the same intervention site. Most studies examined initiatives that were implemented at public sectors from tertiary, secondary to primary health facilities, while a few were imple- mented at private sectors. Efforts of integrating PAFP into existing health system from health system perspectives such as funding the programs, training of trainer （TOT） training or on the job training of physicians and mid-level service provider, expan- sion the range of contraceptive methods available including a few free distribution of contraceptives, improving data collection including cost analysis in a few countries,service guidelines provided to health professionals, supportive supervision at program sites to ensure quality of care, and leadership from government to strengthen PAC/ PAFP service by revising or developing a new national policy. Effects of those intervention programs included that 2 studies decreased abortion rates, 7 studies improved modern contraceptive use, 1 study improved women＇s knowledge on sexual ＆ reproductive health, and 5 studies report

Objective To evaluate the impact of major causes of death on changes of life expectancy in China. Methods Life expectancy was calculated by standard life table techniques using mortality data from the national censuses in 1990 and 2000 and the 1% National Population Sampling Surveys in 1995 and 2005, Mortality data about the major causes of death from VR-MOH were used as reference values to estimate their death proportions of the specific age groups by sex and regions, as well as all-cause mortality and age-specific mortality rates of major causes of death. Decomposition method was used to quantitatively evaluate the impact. Results Three key findings were identified in our study. First, China's health challenge was shifted from diseases related to living conditions to those related to behavior and lifestyle, with rural areas relatively lagged behind urban areas, Second, the impacts of cardiovascular diseases and neoplasm on the middle aged and elderly population were stressed. Third, compared to the urban population, the rural population tended to have increasing mortality of neoplasm and cardiovascular diseases, especially in adults at the age of 15-3. years. Conclusion Further efforts should be made to reduce the incidence of neoplasm and cardiovascular diseases, especially in rural areas, by promoting healthy behavior and lifestyle and providing appropriate therapies for all patients in need.

Rats of both sexes were fed on a basal feed containing 1% refined konjac meal (RKM) for 18 months and the effects of RKM on the cell aging were observed. A comparable group fed on the basic feed was used as the control. Results obtained demonstrate that the long-term feeding of RKM to rats can delay the course of cell aging of the gliocyte, cadiomyocyte, and the endothelial cell of the large and medium arteriases, hence it is likely to delay the occurrence of arteriosclerosis and improve the functions of the brain, heart and vascular system.

Effects of refined konjac meal (RKM) on the calcium and phosphorus metabolism and bone parameters were observed in rats of both sexes fed with food containing 1% of RKM for 18 months. A comparable group of rats fed on basic diet only was used as a *** obtained indicate that all the measured parameters (serum calcium and phosphorus level, femur weight and its calcium and phesphorus content, and the osteometry of the tibia) showed no significant difference between the experimental and the control *** there is no adverse effect either on the calcium and phosphorus metabolism or on the bone after a long-term intake at a moderate dosage.

In this experiment lung carcinoma was induced by crocidolite plus benzo(a)pyrene in rat. From the cancer models, we observcd that the incidcnce (16.0%) of lung carcinomas was lowel, and the survival time (3.6 days) of the first case of carcinoma and the mean survival time (758 days) of the rats with carcinoma were higher in the group of rats drinking 2% green tea extract for life than in the positive group (without drinking green tea extract). The mortality ratio (0.5047) was smaller in the cxperimental group than in the positive control group, and the survival curve of the experimental group significantly raised up, in comparison with the positive group.

Aim:To investigate the anticancer activity of dihydroartemisinin （DHA）,a deriva-tive of antimalaria drug artemisinin in a panel of human ovarian cancer cell ***:Cell growth was determined by the MTT viability *** andcell cycle progression were evaluated by a DNA fragmentation gel electro-phoresis,flow cytometry assay,and TUNEL assay;protein and mRNA expression wereanalyzed by Western blotting and RT-PCR ***:Artemisinin and itsderivatives,including artesunate,arteether,artemether,arteannuin,and DHA,exhibit anticancer growth activities in human ovarian cancer *** them,DHA is the most effective in inhibiting cell *** cancer cell lines aremore sensitive （5-10-fold） to DHA treatment compared to normal ovarian *** at micromolar dose levels exhibits a dose-and time-dependent cyto-toxicity in ovarian cancer cell ***,DHA induced apoptosis and G2cell cycle arrest,accompanied by a decrease of Bcl-xLand Bcl-2 and an increase ofBax and ***:The promising results show for the first time that DHAinhibits the growth of human ovarian cancer *** selective inhibition ofovarian cancer cell growth,apoptosis induction,and G2arrest provide in vitroevidence for further studies of DHA as a possible anticancer drug in the clinicaltreatment of ovarian cancer.
