Geochronology of middle Neoproterozoic volcanic deposits in Yangtze Craton interior of South China and its implications to tectonic settings

Here we report new shrimp dating results of the crystal tuff in Ejiaao Formation of middle Banxi Group in northern Guizhou. The results indicate that the volcanic deposition occurred at ~780 Ma. We also suggests that the igneous activities across Yangtze Craton with diabase dyke swarms and basal volcanic rocks during middle Banxi time are indicative of the episodic, extensive and vigorous great bimodal igneous events during middle Neoproterozoic (825-720 Ma) in South China. The characteristics of the igneous series are contrary to the model claiming they are of island-arc origin, but suggest that they are the records of rifting process and may be related to the episodic plume activities leading to the break-up of Rodinia.

The Pb isotopes and trace element compositions of the silicate fraction of airborne dust from the chinese Loess Plateau were analyzed to infer provenance change during the past 8 *** results indicate that the composition of eolian dust changed at 2.6 Ma,coincident with initiation of the Northern Hemisphere ice *** change in trace element composition at 2.6 Ma indicates that a larger component of the eolian dust was derived from felsic rocks after this *** isotopic evidence demonstrates that the source material of Tertiary Red Clay differs to some extent from that of Quaternary eolian *** chemical weathering may result in compositional changes in eolian deposits,such a scenario is not supported by the present *** that glacial grinding and frost-weathering processes have been active in the peaks of high mountains during the Quaternary,eolian dust of this age contains a large proportion of material derived from areas of high topographic relief and relatively little material from low-lying cratonic *** alpine processes played an important role in controlling the distinct changes in Pb isotopes and trance element concentrations recorded at around 2.6 Ma.

A Study of the Rhenium-Osmium Geochronometry of Molybdenites

This study deals with the first application of the isotope dilution - inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in the rhenium-osmium geochronometry in China. The chemical separation procedure included decomposition of samples by means of alkali fusion, extraction of rhenium by acetone and extraction of osmium by distillation. The recovery of both elements in the entire process was more than 90% . The blanks of analyses were 0.07 ng for rhenium and 0.01 ng for 187Os. The mineralization ages of molybdenites from four molybdenum deposits in China were determined by using this method, with a precision (2σ)of about ±3. . These results agree satisfactorily with their geological backgrounds. The Re-Os method can directly determine ages of metal deposits and reflect the true ages more reliably than other dating methods that only determine the ages of country rocks from which mineralization ages are inferred. As many hydrothermal sulphide deposits usually contain molybdenites, this method has bright prospects of wide application.

Orthogneisses are the major country-rocks hosting eclogites in the Sulu UHP terrane, eastem China. All of the analyzed orthogneiss cores from the main drilling hole of the chinese Continental Scientific Drilling Project (CCSD-MH) have similar major and trace element compositions and a granite protolith. These rocks have relatively high LREE/HREE ratios, strong negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu=0.20-0.3.) and negative Ba anomalies (Ba/Ba=0.25-0.64.. Coesite and coesite-bearing UHP mineral assemblages are common inclusions in zircons separated from orthogneiss, paragneiss, amphibolite, and (retrograded) eclogite of the CCSD-MH. This suggests that the eclogite, together with its country-rocks, experienced in situ ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphism. Laser Raman spectroscopy and cathodoluminescence (CL) images show that zircons from the orthogneisses are zoned and that they have distinct mineral inclusions in the different zones. Most zircons retain early magmatic cores with abundant low-pressure mineral inclusions, which are mantled with metamorphic zircon containing inclusions of coesite and other UHP minerals. The outermost rims on these grains contain low-pressure mineral inclusions, such as quartz and albite. shrimp U-Pb dating of the zoned zircons gives three discrete and meaningful groups of ages: Proterozoic ages for the protolith, 227±2 Ma for the coesite-bearing mantles, and 209±3.Ma for the amphibolite-facies retrograde rims. The widespread occurrence of UHP mineral inclusions in zircons from the Sulu metamorphic belt dated at about 227 Ma suggests that voluminous continental crust experienced late Triassic subduction to depths of at least 120 km and perhaps more than 200 km. 18 Ma later the terrane was rapidly exhumed to mid-crustal levels, and the UHP rocks were overprinted by amphibolite-facies metamorphism. The exhumation rate deduced from the zircon age data and previously obtained metamorphic P-Tdata is estimated to be 5.6-11.0 km/Ma. Such rapid exhumation

＜正＞ Plastic deformation of garnet in coesite-bearing eclogite, quartz eclogite and garnet amphibolite of the ultra-high pressure metamorphic（UHPM） complex in Yingshan County, Dabie Mountains, has been studied by transmission electron microscopy （TEM）. Garnets have undergone ductile deformation under eclogite and amphibolite facies conditions. Garnet microstructures vary greatly with the dislocation density of the garnet being lower in coesite-bearing eclogite is than that in garnel *** generated by strong tectonic movement were an important component of the total pressure causing the formation of eclogite in the Dabie UHPM zone. The three-dimensional tectonic principal stresses and additional tectonic stress-induced hydrostatic pressure [Ps=-（σ1+σ2+σ3./3. are reconstructed according to the differential stress and strain ratio （a） of garnet in minor coesite-bearing eclogite of Yingshan county. Then the gravity-induced hydrostatic pressure （PG） is calculated through P minus PS, where P is estimated to be 2.8 GPa based on the quartz-coesite geobarmeter. Therefore, the thickness of the rock column overlying the coesite-bearing eclogite in Yingshan county is determined to be ≥2.09-3..11 km. this estimation is significantly different from the previous estimation of ≥100km obtained solely by considering the weight/specific weight ratio （W/SW）.It gives also a proper explanation to the puzzle that no tracer of addition of mantle-derived material has been found in the Dabie UHPM zone during the process of UHPM, although a number of researches claim that this process was taking place at depth of the mantle （≥100 km） . It is concluded that attention should be paid to the additional tectonic stress-induced hydrostatic pressure in the study of UHPM zones.

SOME REMARKS ON CHENJIAWO FAUNA──On the First Appearance of Peking Man Fauna

The Chenjiawo fauna includes two stratigraphically distinct groups of mammalian fossils, 14.species of mammals and 4.stratigraphic horizons. They are L5, L6, S6 and L8-S9, representing a wide temporal distribution. The first appearance of Peking Man fauna can be correlated with Event 9 in America and Europe (Repenning, 1987) and is marked by the lowest stratigraphic occurrence of Cricetinus varians (LSD ). In northern Europe, Event 9 is believed to have taken place near the end of the Saale glaciation about 500 000 years ago (Bonifay, 1990). Therefore the geological age of the Chenjiawo fauna is between 500 000-1000 000 years B. P., corresponding to oxygen isotope. Stages 14.23. Through the correlation between the solid earth, atmosphere,hydrosphere, and biosphere, the boundary between the Upper and Lower Lishi Formation should be moved to the S4.L5 boundary.

We propose that inherited Neoproterozoic zircons in Mesozoic igneous rocks from the eastern portion of the North China craton(NCC) were initially derived from the Yangtze/South China block,rather than from the NCC *** mechanism that introduced these zircons into the NCC was likely tectonic underplating during Triassic continental subduction/collision of the Yangtze block beneath the *** addition of abundant crustal materials represented by the exotic zircons,probably along the Moho or weak interfaces within the NCC crust,led to the crustal thickening of the *** sialic materials contributed significantly to the Mesozoic igneous rocks, either as source rocks or as contaminants of magmas generated during an extensional environment following crustal *** thickening was spatially linked to lithospheric thinning,with both occurring mainly in the eastern segment of the NCC, suggestive of an intrinsic relationship between thickening and thinning events during Mesozoic evolution of the NCC.

A suite of slightly metamorphosed Carboniferous sedimentary strata occurs in the northern margin of the Dabie Mountains, central *** consists,in ascending order,of the upper Huayuanqiang Formation(C),the Yangshan Formation(C),the Daorenchong Formation(C),the most widely distributed Huyoufang Formation(C) and the Yangxiaozhuang Formation (C).The provenance of the Carboniferous sedimentary rocks is constrained by the integration of trace elements,detrital mineral chemistry and sensitive high resolution ion microprobe(shrimp) dating of detrital zircons,which can help to understand the connection between the provenance and the Paleozoic tectonic evolution of the Qinling-Dabie *** trace element compositions indicate that the source terrain was probably a continental island *** tourmalines were mainly derived from aluminous and Al-poor metapelites and metapsammites,and some are sourced from Li-poor granitoids, pegmatites and *** garnets,found only in the uppermost Huyoufang Formation,are almandine and Mn-almandine garnets,indicating probable sources mainly from garnetiferous schists,and partly from granitoid *** detrital white Kmicas are muscovitic in the Huayuanqiang,Daorenchong and Huyoufang Formations,and phengitic with Si contents(p.f.u.) from 3.20 up to max.3.4.-3.53.in the uppermost Huyoufang and the Yangxiaozhuang Formations,a meta-sedimentary source. Major components in the detrital zircon age structure for the Huyoufang Formation range from 506 to 3.3.Ma,centering on - 4.0 and - 4.0 Ma,which is characteristic of the Qinling and Eriangping Groups in the Qinling and Tongbai Mountains, central ***,the major source of the Carboniferous sedimentary rocks in the northern margin of Dabie Mountains was from the southern margin of the Sino-Korean Craton represented by the Qinling and Eriangping *** source area was an island-arc system during the Early Paleozoic that collided with the Sino-Korea plate towards the e
