A marine stratigraphic sequence across the Pliocene / Pleistocene boundary has been found in the north-ern continental shelf of the South china Sea. The marine Quaternary deposits in the Yinggehai Basin may ex-ceed 2,000 m in thickness, probably providing the best section for studying the lower boundary of the marinePleistocene in South china. The vertical succession with planktonic foraminifers and nannofossils revealed inboreholes in the basin has been well correlated with that in the international stratotype section of thePliocene / Pleistocene boundary at Vrica, Italy, resulting in the acquirement of a biostratigraphic boundary at1.64 Ma. This boundary, however, does not coincide with any prominent lithological palaeoenvironmentalchanges in the study area and can hardly be used in geological practice. There are, in contrast, significantchanges at the level of LAD of Globorotalia multicamerata sensu lato located below the above-mentionedboundary. The percentage of planktonic foraminifers in the total population and preservation of foraminiferaltests display great changes at this level corresponding to a clear onlap on the seismic profiles and indicating adepositional hiatus at ca. 2.0-2.5 Ma. Since the level can be widely traced in the Pearl River Mouth Basin andthe Beibu Gulf Basin and well corresponds with the marked depositional environmental changes recorded inthe west Pacific and other regions, it is recommended that the Plio / Pleistocene boundary be drawn at the levelof Gr. multicamerata sensu lato LAD, roughly concurrent with the Gauss / Matuyama turn.

Seasonal variations of radiolarian and diatom fluxes in the central South china Sea during 1993.1995 were overwhelmingly controlled by monsoon climate. Radiolarian and diatom increased obviously during the Northeast (from November to February) and Southwest (from June to September) monsoons and decreased during the periods between the monsoons. The change of circulation driven by the monsoons improved water exchange in the different areas that brought rich nutrient materials for the surface microplankton, thereby enhancing radiolarian and diatom fluxes. Variation of radiolarian flux coincided with organic carbon flux, surface primary and export productivities. High radiolarian flux corresponded to high surface primary productivity. Radiolarian and diatom fluxes raised abnormally during 1994-1995 could be attributed to the El Nino event during the period.

The tropical oceans are important source areas for global heat and water vapor transport,and changes in tropical sea surface temperature (SST) will have important impacts on high-latitude and global climate change. It is crucial to establish the precise phase relationship between tropical and high-latitude climate variability to gain insight into the mechanisms of global climate change. Here,we present multi-proxy records across the penultimate deglaciation (Termination Ⅱ) from sediment Core SO18459,which is located in the outflow area of the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) of the Timor Sea. These proxy records include planktonic and benthic foraminifera δ 18O,planktonic foraminifera G. ruber Mg/Ca-derived SST,and δ18Ow of sea surface water. The Mg/Ca-SST records indicate a warming of 4.1°C in the Timor Sea over Termination Ⅱ,which is in phase with decrease in planktonic and benthic δ18O. Our results suggest that at millennial timescales,climate change of the tropical oceans is synchronous with high-latitude ice volume changes. Furthermore,warming of the Timor Sea is almost simultaneous with warming of the Antarctic,suggesting a rapid heat transfer from the tropics to the Antarctic via the atmosphere and/or ocean circulations. The G. ruber δ18O and SST records of Core SO18459 show a marked YD-like event during Termination Ⅱ,which is probably caused by decrease in Australian rainfall or strengthening of the Western Pacific Warm Pool. However,a similar YD-like event is not observed in East Asian rainfall records. This discrepancy indicates that different tropical climate systems may have different responses to the same forcing,such as El Nio Southern Oscillation. A similar YD-like event is observed in the global benthic foraminiferal δ18O records during Termination Ⅱ,implying teleconnection of millennial scale climate change between the tropical regions and high latitudes.

Based on the data of high-resolution seismic profiles, an ancient river channel sys-tem of the last glaciation occurred along the Zhedong and Xihu depression in the southeast of Hupijiao rise. The distribution of the channel fill system shows that the ancient Changjiang River went through the Changjiang depression into the low land plain of the outside continental shelf during the low sea level cycle of the last glaciation. The big channel fill into Okinawa Trough is not found due to the depletion of the river kinetic energy in the low land plain. The river discharge dispersal was of an important role to the dilution of the northern Okinawa Trough sea at that time. Six ancient river channel systems (A―F), which are main distributaries of ancient Changjiang in the East china Sea continental shelf during the last glaciation, may be buried off the modern Changjiang estuary. The distribution of these channels coincides with the zonal elevations in the sea floor.

To determine carbonate contents of deep sea sediments using physical properties is an enjoyable and efficient paleoceanographic way, which has been processed successfully in many studies based on a low resolution, but rather than a high one. A series of mathematical methods including the least square method were used in this study to build multiple regression equations between color reflectance and carbonate content, and between magnetic susceptibility and carbonate content, based on the data of color reflectance and magnetic susceptibility collected via the ODP Leg 184 cruise, as well as measured carbonate contents. We found that percent carbonate estimated with diffuse reflectance is closer to the measured one than that estimated with magnetic susceptibility, and the multiple regression equation is varied in different sites.

Using a global OGCM and its relevant coupledocean-atmosphere GCM with the contemporary, 6 MaBPand 14 MaBP oceanic topography, respectively, a series ofnumerical experiments are implemented in order to investi-gate the effect of the north shift of Australian continent onthe tropical oceanic circulation, especially the formation ofthe western Pacific warm pool. The numerical experimentsof the individual OGCM forced by the modern atmosphericcirculation indicate that the closure of Indonesian passageresults in warming in the tropical Pacific Ocean and coolingin the tropical Indian Ocean; furthermore, it also results inchange in source of the Indonesian Through Flow (ITF) wa-ter, e.g. ITF mainly originates from the south Pacific at 14MaBP, but it mainly originates from the north Pacific *** coupled model shows similar results as the individualOGCM qualitatively.

Variability of clay mineral assemblages in the Western Pacific Warm Pool(WPWP) over the past 3.0 ka shows the prominent glacial-interglacial ***(62%-91%) is the dominant clay mineral,with decreased contents during interglacials while increased in *** contrast,variations in chlorite(4%-21%),illite(4%-12%),and kaolinite(2%-10%) share a similar pattern with higher contents during interglacials than glacials,mirroring to that of *** results indicate that the smectite-dominated clay minerals derive mainly from the river detrital inputs of New *** glacial-interglacial cycle of clay mineral assemblages well correspond to the fluctuation of sea *** the sea level was low,the river materials can travel more easily across the narrow shelf off the island of New Guinea,inject directly into the subsurface currents flowing westwards,then merge into the Equatorial Undercurrent(EUC),and eventually deposit on the central part of *** periods of the smectite content indicate the intensity of mechanical erosion in its provenance of New Guinea,responding to the river runoff and precipitation,and this could also be linked to the meridional migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone(ITCZ).

Fourteen species of Neomonoceratina from the West Pacific margins are considered in the present paper, of which two species and one subspecies are described as new. Lectotypes have been designated for three of Brady’s 1868 species (N. bataviana, N. iniqua and N. rhomboidea) and also for two of Kingma’s 1948 species (N. macropora and N. microreticulata).The taxonomic confusion within the genus, particularly with respect to N. crispata, N. delicata, N. dongtaiensis, N. iniqua and N. microreticulata, is clarified and the zoogeographical implication of the distribution of the genus is discussed.

Based on compositive analysis and interpretation of the observed and historical data, the geophysical field characters and structural properties of the Gagua “Wedge” Zone of the sea area east of Taiwan Island and the primary tectonic stress direction and its variabilities of backarc spreading in the southern Okinawa Trough are studied. It is concluded from the study results that the Gagua “Wedge” Zone is structurally consistent with the Gagua ridge and two fault basins on both sides of the Gagua ridge, and adjusts the moving direction and distance of the western Philippine Sea plate to make the northwestward motion of the plate on its east side change to the northward subduction of the plate on its west side so that the primary tectonic stress direction of the Okinawa Trough changed from NW-SE to nearly N-S, which provided the stress source for the Okinawa Trough to enter the second spreading stage.
