Both correlation analysis and case study indi-cate that Antarctic oscillation (AAO) is closely related withsummer rainfall in eastern China. When AAO is stronger inboreal spring, especially in May, there is more mei-yu rain-fall in summer with a longer period along the Yangtze andHuaihe River valley. In contrast, there is less rainfall with ashorter period corresponding to a weaker AAO. Besides, ananomalous AAO changes the position and intensity of severalcirculation systems, which are important to summer rainfallalong the Yangtze and Huaihe River valley. Furthermore, theAntarctic sea ice is negatively correlated with the intensity ofAAO with a 6-month leading time. The result in this studyprovides a new method for the prediction of mei-yu.

The accumulation of cesium by the bacterium Thermus sp. TibetanG6 was examined under different K+ growth conditions. The effects of external pH and Na+ on the accumulation of ce-sium were also studied, and the mechanism involved was discussed. K+ regimes played an important role in the accumulation of cesium by the strain TibetanG6. The quantity of cesium accumulated (2. h) was much higher in K+-deficient regime than that in K+-sufficient regime. The pH and Na+ had different effects on the accumulation of cesium in the two K+ regimes. IR spectra analyses indicated that the biosorption is a process of homeostasis with cesium initially accumulated on the cell wall.

Recent experimental results from beijing Spectroscopy (BES) are reviewed, including the hadron spectroscopy from J/ψ decays, and a number of new states are found or confirmed, including σ, κ, X(183.), ωφ threshold enhancement in J/ψ→γωφ, a broad resonance in J/ψ→K + K ? π 0, decay studies of ψ(2.) and χ CJ , as well as the results of ψ(3.70) non-D $ \bar D $ decays. The current status of BEPCII/BESIII, the major upgrade of BEPC/BESII, is also reported.

Because atmosphere itself is a nonlinear system and there exist some problems using the linearized equations to study the initial error growth, in this paper we try to use the error nonlinear growth theory to discuss its evolution, based on which we first put forward a new concept: nonlinear local Lyapunov exponent. It is quite different from the classic Lyapunov exponent because it may characterize the finite time error local average growth and its value depends on the initial condition, initial error, variables, evolution time, temporal and spatial scales. Based on its definition and the at-mospheric features, we provide a reasonable algorithm to the exponent for the experimental data, obtain the atmospheric initial error growth in finite time and gain the maximal prediction time. Lastly, taking 500 hPa height field as example, we discuss the application of the nonlinear local Lyapunov exponent in the study of atmospheric predictability and get some reliable results: atmospheric predictability has a distinct spatial structure. Overall, predictability shows a zonal distribution. Prediction time achieves the maximum over tropics, the second near the regions of Antarctic, it is also longer next to the Arctic and in subtropics and the mid-latitude the predictability is lowest. Particularly speaking, the average prediction time near the equation is 12.days and the maximum is located in the tropical Indian, Indonesia and the neighborhood, tropical eastern Pacific Ocean, on these regions the prediction time is about two weeks. Antarctic has a higher predictability than the neighboring latitudes and the prediction time is about 9 days. This feature is more obvious on Southern Hemispheric summer. In Arctic, the predictability is also higher than the one over mid-high latitudes but it is not pronounced as in Antarctic. Mid-high latitude of both Hemispheres (3.°S―60°S, 3.°―60°N) have the lowest predictability and the mean prediction time is just 3.4 d. In addition, predictab

Based on the plant level data from the First National Census of Basic Units, the Second National Census of Basic Units, and the First National Economic Census of China, this paper ex- amines the geographical agglomeration of chinese manufacturing industries at a more disaggregated level both by industrial classi-fication and spatial unit analysis. Applying the agglomeration index proposed by Maurel and Sedillot, studies show that the most agglomerated industries are resource-intensive, and capital and technology intensive while industries demanding localized inputs or serving localized markets or favored by local governments are fairly dispersed. The more disaggregated industries are more spa- tially agglomerated. At the finer spatial scale, industries are more dispersed. Results indicate that within-county spillovers are stronger than nearby-county spillovers, and within-prefecture spillovers are stronger than nearby prefecture spillovers. Local- ized spillovers are still quite substantial at a range beyond that of counties. Comparing the agglomeration index of chinese manu- facturing industries in 1996, 2.01 and 2.04, agglomeration seems to be a general tendency. Results also indicate that some industries have experienced remarkable changes in their levels of agglom- eration in the period 1996–2.04.

A new method for calculating the clear day total ozone amount was obtained by the regression analysis of the observation data of ozone,solar UV radiation, and meteorological *** this method the monthly mean total ozone amounts for the year 1991 in beijing were calculated. Generally, the calculated values agree well with the Dobson spectrophotometer measurements, the average relative deviation between them being less than 2. 2.. According to the F-test,the photochemical reactions in the atmosphere,the solar UV radiation,and the aerosols are three most important factors to affect the column total ozone amount.

The multi-spatial variability modes of the At-lantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOO are iden-tified in the natural coupled simulation of two climate models,the MOC either oscillates at decadal scales with strong cross-equatorial flow or fluctuates locally at interannual scaleswith weaker cross-equatorial flow. Former studies mainlyemphasize the paleo-environmental and paleo-climatic im-pacts of the meridional overturning states transition; thisanalysis indicates the existence of the multi-spatial variabilitymodes of the MOC at interannual to decadal scales. Furtheranalysis indicates that the conventionally used MOC index,which is defined as the maximum zonal mean meridionalstream-function of the North Atlantic, cannot properly de-scribe the multi-spatial variability characteristics of theMOC.
