Southeastern extension of the Red River fault zone (RRFZ) and its tectonic evolution significance in western South china Sea

Recent geophysical surveys and basin modeling suggest that the No.1 fault in the Ying- gehai basin (YGHB) is the seaward elongation of the Red River fault zone (RRFZ) in the South china Sea (SCS). The RRFZ, which separates the South china and Indochina block, extends first along the Yuedong fault, offshore of Vietnam, and then continues southward and breaks off into two {3.es: the Lupar fault and the Tinjia fault. The southern extension of the Lupar fault dies out beneath the NW Borneo while the Tinjia fault extends southeast and reaches the Brunei-Sabah area. According to the gravity and geomagnetic data, and the tectonic evolution of the basins, there are different evolution histories between the Wan’an basin (WAB) and the basins in the Nansha block. The Tinjia fault may be the boundary between the Balingian block and the Nansha block. Hence, the line linking the Yue- dong fault and the Tinjia fault, which both are continental margin faults and strike-slip ones in the geological evolution histories, constitute the boundary between the Indochina and Nansha block. The Lupar fault, in contrast, is an intraplate fault within the Indochina block. The results provide new hints for reconstructing the tectonic evolution history of the RRFZ and the opening of the SCS, and also a framework for hydrocarbon prospecting in the region.

Independent of Indochina extrusion, the South china Sea experienced a process from passive continental rifting to marginal sea drifting. According to the fault patterns in the Beibu Gulf basin and the Pearl River Mouth basin, the continental rifting and early spreading stage from 3. to 26 Ma were controlled by extensional stress field, which shifted clockwise from southeastward to south southeastward. From 24 Ma on, the sea spread in NW-SE direction and ceased spreading at around 15.5 Ma. Integrated geological information with the assumption that the South china Sea developed along a pre-Cenozoic weakness zone, we did analogue experiments on the South china Sea evolu- tion. Experiments revealed that the pre-existing weakness zone goes roughly along the uplift zone between the present Zhu-1 and Zhu-2 depression. The pre-existing weakness zone is composed of three segments trending NNE, roughly EW and NEE, respectively. The early opening of the South china Sea is accompanied with roughly 15° clockwise rotation, while the SE sub-sea basin opened with SE extension. Tinjar fault was the western boundary of the Nansha block (Dangerous Ground), while Lupar fault was the eastern boundary of the Indochina, NW-trending rift belt known as Zengmu basin developed between above two faults due to block divergent of Indochina from Nansha. In the experiment, transtensional flower structures along NW-trending faults are seen, and slight inversion occurs along some NE-dipping faults. The existence of rigid massifs changed the orientations of some faults and rift belt, and also led to deformation concentrate around the massifs. The rifting and drifting of the South china Sea might be caused by slab pull from the proto South china Sea subducting toward Borneo and/or mantle flow caused by India-Asia collision.

Sequence stratigraphic framework and distribution of depositional systems for the Paleogene in Liaodong Bay area

With a comprehensive geological and geophysical data base,the Paleogene in the Liaodong Bay area,which consists of the Kongdian,Shahejie and Donghying Formations from the base to top,was divided into 4 second-order sequences and 8 third-order sequences based on the characteristics of the se-quence boundaries. Each third-order sequence is subdivided into the lowstand,lake transgressive and highstand systems tracts. The Lowstand systems tract (LST) is mainly composed of progradational parasequence sets,while the lake transgressive systems tract (TST) largely consists of the retrograda-tional parasequence sets and the highstand systems tract (HST) is dominated by the progradational parasequence sets. The main types of depositional systems include the shallow lake,semi-deep lake,deep lake,delta,fan delta,braided fluvial delta and nearshore subaqueous fan. The braided fluvial delta and fan delta depositional systems are mainly confined to the sequences of the lower SEs4-Ek,SEs3.and SEs1+2,while the sequences of SEd3.SEd2 and SEd1 are dominated by the delta and nearshore subaqueous fan depositional systems with the latter being developed at the downthrown side of the basin-bounding fault in each sequence. The evolution of the depositional systems is always con-trolled by the paleo-tectonic setting and the ancient landform in the space and geological time. It is concluded that the most favorable reservoirs are distributed in the Liaoxi low uplift and the central Liaozhong sag.

Improvement of Efficiency and Flexibility in Multi-slice Helical CT

One of the main aspects in computed tomography (CT) development is to make CT rapidly scan a large longitudinal volume with high z-axis resolution. The combination of helical scanning with multi-slice CT is a promising approach. Image reconstruction in multi-slice CT becomes, therefore, the major challenge. Known algorithms need to derive the complementary data or work only for certain range of pitches. A reconstruction algorithm was presented that works with the direct data as well as arbitrary pitches. Filter interpolation based on the proposed method was implemented easy. The results of computer simulations under kinds of conditions for four-slice CT were presented. The proposed method can obtain higher efficiency than the conventional method.

Structure and Oxidation Behavior of a Plasma Sprayed Yttrium Silicates Coated SiC-C/C with a Glass Outer Sealant from 1573. to 1873.

Different compositions of yttrium silicates coatings were deposited on SiC-C/C by plasma spraying and an outer borosilicate glass was applied on the yttrium silicates coatings surfaces. The structure of the multi-layer coatings was characterized by XRD and SEM analyses. High temperature oxidation behavior of the multi-layer coatings coated C/C composites was investigated. Results show that SiC/2SiO2 Y2O3.1.5SiO2 Y203. SiO2 Y2O3.glass multi-layer coating has better high temperature oxidation resistance, protecting carbon/ carbon composites from oxidation at 1 773.K in air for 164 h with the weight loss of 1.65%. The oxidation weight loss of the coated C/C with time accorded with parabolic rule in the temperature range 1 573.K-1 873.K; and the corresponding oxidation activation energy of the coated carbon/carbon composites is 13..2 kJ/mol.

The mechanism of the graphics distrotion in a laser display system was studied. Based on the mathematical analysis, the pincushion and linear distortions were calculated. Theoretical results agree well with the experimental observation. By tracing laser beams from image plan back to scanners, a relation between the image points on the screen and the scan angles was built. Thus, it has been able to rectify the scanning distortions by computer software effectively.

Impact of Climate and Land-Use Changes on Water Security for Agriculture in Northern china

North china is the most important food basket of china, where the majority of wheat and corn are produced. Most crops grown in North china are irrigated, thus water security is food security. Since the 1980s, drying has been frequently observed, as shown by a reduction in precipitation, cutoff in riverflow, and shrinkage of lakes. This increase in drying cannot be explained by climate change alone. We propose that intensive land-use in this area in recent decades has had a significant impact. The objectives of the study are to develop a quantitative model of the concurrent processes of climate change and land-use in North china, and to estimate the relative contributions of each on the observed drying. We integrated relevant socioeconomic data, land-use data, and climate data in the model, and carried out a detailed multi-temporal （decade, year, day） analysis. Results showed that land-use has greatly changed since 1999. This change is mainly associated with an extremely important 1999 national policy of ＂returning farmland and grazing land to forest and grassland＂. We found an interesting interaction between climate change and land use policy on riverflow, runoff, and evapotranspiration. During 1970s and 1980s, climate change explained more than 80%, while the land-use change explained only 10% of the riverflow change. The relative contributions were 45 and 45% in the 1980s-1990s and 3. and 55% in the 1990s-2000s respectively for climate change and land-use change. Since the 1990s land-use change has also contributed more to runoff change than climate change. The opposite trend was found for changes in evapotranspiration. Water availability for agriculture in northern china is simultaneously stressed by extensive changes in land-use and rapid climate change. Adaptation of ecological principles, such as the ＂returning farmland/grazing land to forest and grassland＂ policy, and other adjustments of economic developmental strategies can be effective tools to mitigate th
