The functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) based on blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) contrast has emerged as one of the most potent noninvasive tools for mapping brain function and has been widely used to explore physiological, pathological changes and mental activity in the brain. Exploring the nature and property of BOLD signal has recently attracted more attentions. Despite that great progress has been made in investigation of the characteristics and neurophysiological basis, the exact nature of BOLD signal remains unclear. In this paper we discuss the characteristics of BOLD signals, the nonlinear BOLD response to external stimuli and the relation between BOLD signals and neural electrophysiological recordings. Furthermore, we develop our new opinions regarding nonlinear BOLD response and make some perspectives on future study.

Recently, we have proposed an iterative projection and contraction (PC) method for a class of linear complementarity problems (LCP)([4]). The method was showed to be globally convergent, but no statement could be made about the rate of convergence. In this paper, we develop a modified globally linearly convergent PC method for linear complementarity problems. Both the method and the convergence proofs are very simple. The method can also be used to solve some linear variational inequalities. several computational experiments are presented to indicate that the method is surprising good for solving some known difficult problems.

The first decade of the 21st century has been labeled as "the sensing decade". The functional nanomaterials offer excellent platforms for fabrication of sensitive biosensing devices, including optical and electronic biosensors. A lot of works have fo- cused on the biofunctionalization of different nanomaterials, such as metal nanoparticles, semiconductor nanoparticles and carbon nanostructures, by physical adsorption, electrostatic binding, specific recognition or covalent coupling. These biofunc- tionalized nanomaterials can be used as catalysts, electronic conductors, optical emitters, carriers or tracers to obtain the ampli- fied detection signal and the stabilized recognition probes or biosensing interface. The designed signal amplification strategies have greatly promoted the development of stable, specific, selective and sensitive biosensors in different fields. This review in- troduces some novel principles and detection strategies in the area of biosensing, based on functional nanomaterials. The gen- eral methods for biofunctionalization of nanomaterials with biomolecules and their biosensing application in immunoassay of protein, DNA detection, carbohydrate analysis and cytosensing are also described.

We present a study of the origin of infrared (IR) emission in the opticallynormal, infrared luminous galaxy NGC 4418. By decomposing the stellar absorption features andcontinua in the range of 3.00-8000 A from the sloan Digital sky survey into a set of simple stellarpopulations, we derive the stellar properties for the nuclear region of NGC 4418. We compare theobserved infrared luminosity with the one derived from the starburst model, and find thatstar-forming activity contributes only 7% to the total IR emission, that as the IR emission regionis spatially very compact, the most possible source for the greater part of the IR emission is adeeply embedded AGN, though an AGN component is found to be unnecessary for fitting the opticalspectrum.

Based on the observation of the deep bore cores sampled from the state of Cali-fornia, UsA, preferred arranged particulate concentration belts were found in the ultra-slipping lamellae. And the same phenomenon was found again later in the bore cores from the petroleum basin in the Northern shaanxi Province. It may be the product of the dynamic processes involv-ing tumbling, grinding and compresso-shearing functions, so the spherical particulates with ul-tra-size of nm and mm are called grinding grain. The formation of the grinding grains is related with the ductile-brittle deformation, the lateral pressure of the slipping, and the very low grade of dynamic metamorphism of the rocks. Based on the systematic analysis, it is indicated that some elements like Nb and Ta are enriched in the grinding grains in the granitic rocks because of the chemical differentiation, and that the slipping lamellae bearing grinding grains in mudstone with smear efficiency prove a perfect seal for oil and gas reservoirs. Meanwhile, the paper provides bases for the studies on the fast stick-slip movement and shear paradigm.
