AtHsfA2 modulates expression of stress responsive genes and enhances tolerance to heat and oxidative stress in Arabidopsis

There is increasing evidence for considerable interlinking between the responses to heat stress and oxidative stress, and recent researches suggest heat shock transcription factors (Hsfs) play an important role in linking heat shock with oxidative stress signals. In this paper, we present evidence that AtHsfA2 modulated expression of stress responsive genes and enhanced tolerance to heat and oxidative stress in Arabidopsis. Using Northern blot and quantitative RT-PCR analysis, we demonstrated that the expression of AtHsfA2 was induced by not only HS but also oxidative stress. By functional analysis of AtHsfA2 knockout mutants and AtHsfA2 overexpressing transgenic plants, we also demonstrated that the mutants displayed reduced the basal and acquired thermotolerance as well as oxidative stress tolerance but the overexpression lines displayed increased tolerance to these stress. The phenotypes correlated with the expres-sion of some Hsps and APX1, ion leakage, H2O2 level and degree of oxidative injuries. These results showed that, by modulated expression of stress responsive genes, AtHsfA2 enhanced tolerance to heat and oxidative stress in Arabidopsis. So we suggest that AtHsfA2 plays an im-portant role in linking heat shock with oxidative stress signals.

Optical waveguides in LiNbO_3.and stoichiometric LiNbO_3.crystals by proton exchange

The formation of optical planar waveguides in LiNbO3.and stoichiometric LiNbO3.crystals by proton exchange was reported. The prism-coupling method was used to characterize the dark-line spectroscopy at the wavelength of 63. and 153. nm, re-spectively. The mode optical near-field outputs from proton-exchanged LiNbO3.and SLN waveguides at 63. nm were presented. The mode field from stoichiometric LiNbO3.(SLN) waveguide is lighter and more uniform than that from LiNbO3.waveguide, which means the quality of the waveguide in SLN crystal is better than that of the LiNbO3.waveguide. For proton-exchanged LiNbO3.waveguides, the evo-lution of the refractive index profile with annealing was presented. The disorder profiles of Nb atoms in proton-exchanged LiNbO3.waveguides were obtained by Rutherford backscattering/channeling technique. It is shown that the longer the exchange time, the larger the displacement of Nb atoms.

This paper discusses the problem concerning the continuity and linearity of additive derivation of nest algebras on normed spaces. It is proved that every linear derivation of a nest algebraalgN is continuous provided that one of the following conditions is satisfied: (1) 0+ (?) 0. (2)X_ (?) X. (3. there exists a non-trivial idempotent p in algN such that the range of p belongsto N. It is also proved that every additive derivation of a nest algebra is automatically linearif the underlying normed space is infinite dimemnsional.

On maximal injective subalgebras in a wΓ factor

Let $ \mathcal{L} $ (F ?) × α ? be the crossed product von Neumann algebra of the free group factor $ \mathcal{L} $ (F ?), associated with the left regular representation λ of the free group F ? with the set {u r : r ∈ ?} of generators, by an automorphism α defined by α(λ(u r )) = exp(2πri)λ(u r ), where ? is the rational number set. We show that $ \mathcal{L} $ (F ?) × α ? is a wΓ factor, and for each r ∈ ?, the von Neumann subalgebra $ \mathcal{A}_r $ generated in $ \mathcal{L} $ (F ?) × α ? by λ(u r ) and υ is maximal injective, where υ is the unitary implementing the automorphism α. In particular, $ \mathcal{L} $ (F ?) × α ? is a wΓ factor with a maximal abelian selfadjoint subalgebra $ \mathcal{A}_0 $ which cannot be contained in any hyperfinite type II1 subfactor of $ \mathcal{L} $ (F ?) × α ?. This gives a counterexample of Kadison’s problem in the case of wΓ factor.
