Fuzzy cluster analysis of the provenance of ancient Yaozhou porcelain body

The technique of neutron activation analysis (NAA) has been employed to measure the content of 29 kinds of elements in the sample of Yaozhou porcelain bodies. Then a fuzzy cluster analysis has been conducted to the NAA data and a diagram of the dynamic fuzzy cluster analysis has been achieved. The results indicate that the batch of ancient Yaozhou porcelain bodies, which were of different overglaze color and were produced by different kilns during a period of over 800 years from the Tang Dynasty (618—907 A.D.) to the Yuan Dynasty (1271—13.8 A.D.), has shared a stable and concentrated raw material source. Provenances of por-celain bodies from different times, though having their spe-cific independence, enjoy a close relationship and are not far from one another. Provenances of porcelain bodies made during the Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties (907—960 A.D.) are found to be closer to one another, while those of the Song (960—1279 A.D.) and the jin Dynasty (1115—123. A.D.) are comparatively concentrated in certain areas and are dif-ferent from those of the Tang Dynasty. Both the tri-colored glazed pottery made in Yaozhou kilns during the Tang Dy-nasty and the Yaozhou porcelain bodies of the Tang period are from the same provenance.

The relativistic microscopic optical potential in the asymmetric nuclear matter is studied in the framework of the Dirac Brueckner-Hartree-Fock method. A new decomposition of the Dirac structure of the nuclear self-energy in nuclear matter is adopted. The self-energy of a nucleon with E > 0 in nuclear matter is calculated with the G matrix in the Hartree-Fock approach. The optical potential of a nucleon in the nuclear medium is identified with the nucleon self-energy. The energy and asymmetric parameter dependence of the relativistic optical potentials for proton and neutron are discussed. The resulting Schroedinger equivalent potentials have reasonable behaviors of the energy dependence. The asymmetric parameter dependence of relativistic optical potentials and Schroedinger potentials are emphasized.

In situ high-pressure energy dispersive X-ray diffraction measurements on polycrystalline powder Ca-CuO2 with an infinite layer structure (IL CaCuO2) have been performed by using diamond anvil cell (DAC) instrument with synchrotron radiation. The results suggest that the crystal structure of IL CaCuO2 is stable under pressure up to 3. GPa at room temperature. According to Birch-Murn- aghan equation of state, assuming pressure derivative 4,=0Bthe bulk modulus B0=181 ?9 GPa is obtained.

The electronic structure of the clusters containing oxygen, the stacking fault and the complex in the transition metal Ni are calculated by the multiple-scattering Xa method. energy levels,density of states and transfer of charge are obtained. Based on the calculation and analysis,the influences of impurity oxygen and structure defect on the electronic structure of the clusters are discussed, and it is found that the local Ni-o cluster with the interstitial oxygen is a stable atomic configuration.

Spark-plasma sintering (SPS) process was used to sinter ZrO2 (8Y) powders, and a relative density of 99% has been reached at a low temperature (13.0°C) and short dwelling time (10 min) compared to the conventional sintered identical samples (1450°C 4 h)(CS). By the X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, the microstructure of the SPS pellet and CS pellet are both indexed by the cubic unit cell (Fm3.). The finer crystallite size (D111) of the SPS pellet is 154 nm and D111 of the CS pellet is more than 1 μm. The AC impedance spectroscopy shows that the ionic conductivity of SPS pellet is different from that of CS pellet. The activation energy for the SPS ceramics, estimated from the slope in the range of 400–800°C, was 91 kJ mol?1, which is in good agreement with CS pellet (96 kJ mol?1), indicating that the conduction mechanism in SPS ceramics is similar to that in CS ceramics.

Synthesis of new carbon nanomolecule: C141

A new [70]fullerene dimer consisting of 141 carbon atoms was first synthesized by a new method with neutron irradiation of [70]fullerene. The results of separation and isolation with two-step HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography) show that this odd-numbered fullerene dimer is stable in air. Laser induced dissociation of C141 mainly yields fragmental species C70 and C71. The UV-vis spectrum of C141 shows that its vis feature is diminished as compared to that of C70. Experiments indicate that this new method for synthesis of fullerene dimers with neutron irra-diation has a high selectivity for formation of C2n-X-C2n type carbon nanomolecules.

Neutron capture effects and pre-atmospheric sizes of meteoroids

Excesses of 80Kr and 82Kr, produced by secondary neutron capture effects of 79Br and 81Br, were observed in meteorites. Epithermal neutron flux, Jn (3.—3.0 eV), and fast neutron flux, Jn( > 5 MeV), were determined according to reactions of 79Br(n, gb)80Kr, 81Br(n, gb)82Kr, and 24Mg(n, a)21Ne, respectively. Cosmogenic noble gases of several ordinary chondrites fell in china indicate a positive relationship between Jn (3.—3.0 eV)/Jn ( > 5 MeV) ratio and Jn (3.—3.0 eV). This suggests large pre-atmospheric sizes of the meteorites, and a considerable fraction of the secondary neutrons were slowed down to epithermal energy. According to its relationship with Jn (3.—3.0 eV)/Jn ( > 5 MeV) ratio, the pre-atmospheric minimum radii and masses of several chinese chondrites were estimated as below: Zhaodong: 60 cm, 3.00 kg; Laochengzhen: 23.cm, 490 kg; Suizhou: 3. cm, 450 kg; Xi Ujimgin: 22 cm, 160 kg; Dongtai: 21 cm, 140 kg.

On the sand surface stability in the southern part of Gurbantünggüt Desert

Longitudinal dunes are the most widespread dune types in the world sand seas but comprehensive study on the sand surface stability is scarce. The southern part of Gurbantnggt Desert is mainly covered by longitudinal dune in which fixed and semi-fixed dunes occupy over 80% of the total area. Systematic analysis on the climatic conditions, the soil moisture and vegetation distributions, and the sand surface activities showed that the fixed and semi-fixed dunes are in a comprehensive low-energy wind environment. Snow cover and frozen soil provide a good protection to the ground surface in winter. The temporal distribution of precipitation and corresponding variation of temperature create a favorable condition for the desert plants growth, especially for the ephemeral plants. The occurrence of effective winds for sand moving in April to June coincides with the stage of relatively wet sand surface and good vegetation cover, which effectively keep the sand surface stable at the interdune and the plinth of the dunes. Activity sand surface appears only at the crest and the upper part of the sand dunes.

energy minigaps caused by lateral surface structures in quasi-one-dimensional GaAs/ AlAs quantum well wires are calculated with the variational and degenerate-perturbational *** a coordinate transformotion. the structured interfaces of the wires are transformed into planar ones so that the boundary conditions of the electronic wave functions can be satisfied exactly on the interfaces. The dependence of the energy minigaps on the lateral surface structures are discussed.

A new type electronic particle counter (EPC, MultisizerTM 3. Beckman Coulter Inc., USA) was used to determine the volumes of human red blood cells (RBCs) in NaCl solutions of different osmolalities. The thermodynamics model describing cell response during freezing process was used to simulate the volume change of RBC in 0.9% NaCl solution during equilibrium freezing process. It was assumed that the effect of temperature on cell volume can be neglected compared to that of osmolality, then by using the phase diagram for the binary system sodium chloride/water, the osmolalities of the NaCl solution under different sub-zero temperatures can be obtained (converted from mass concentration), then the calculated values of RBC volumes can be validated by the experiments.
