A preliminary research on landscape ecology in desertification monitoring and assessment was reported. Also, this paper laid stress on the study of landscape diversity, dominance, evenness and Markov Matrix model and their respective landscape ecological meanings in the desertification monitoring and assessment. Concurrently, it took Shazhuyu Experimental Area, Qinghai Province as a specific case study.

Satellite images are used extensively in studying the urban heat island(UHI) *** evaluated the suitability of thermal infrared(TIR) data from the HJ-1B satellite for detecting UHI using a case study in *** modified algorithms for retrieving the land surface temperature(LST) from HJ-1B data were *** results were compared with LST images derived from a Landsat TM thermal band and the MODIS LST *** spatial pattern of UHI generated using HJ-1B data matched well with that produced using TM and MODIS *** the two algorithms,the mono-window algorithm performed better but further tests are *** more frequent coverage than TM and higher spatial resolution than MODIS,the HJ-1B TIR data present a unique opportunity to study thermal environments in cities in China and neighboring countries.

As a country seriously afflicted with desertification, China suffers a large area of desert land. Although desertification has been brought under control in certain areas, the whole situation is still deteriorating, which constitutes a great impediment to the harmonious development of population, resources and environment in the desertification afflicted regions, which play a crucial role in the nation’s social economic development and environmental protection. desertification control is of great importance to narrowing the gap between the east and the west, eradicating poverty and boosting the economic development of the desertification affected regions and the whole country.

The relationship between desert evolution and change in albedo has been investigated quasi-analytically using a zonal mean two-dimensional energy balance model which considers the radiation transmission process due to thermodynamics and bound- ary layer movement caused by kinetics. A climate state including temperature, zonal wind, meridional wind and vertical wind can be simulated according to the current zonal distribution of albedo. Given desert distribution, characterized by the value and distribution of albedo, the response of climate on albedo has been studied to analyze the evolution of desert climate. One significant result is that the simple model can reproduce mean meridional circulation. Another result indicates that climate corresponds to two equilibria. This happens when the junction temperature between vegetation and desert is higher than a certain critical value. As for the first equilibrium, the desert belt is predicted to move southward in the northern hemisphere with the increasing values of albedo, which corresponds to the current trend of climate change. For the second equilibrium, vegetation will expand northward with increasing values of albedo, which would indicate a narrowing of the desert belt. In order to determine if the two equilibria exist, new physical models are needed.

With a subtropical climate,Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has a typical karst *** desertification has become a serious environmental issue due to its high vulnerability caused by the joint effect of natural settings and human activities,because of which its eco-environment has been deteriorated in recent years,and farmland has been disappearing sharply at the same ***,in turn,has exacerbated the poverty level in the rural areas of the *** this study,we monitored the spatial distribution of rocky land desertification and its temporal evolution using Landsat TM/ETM images of 1985,1995,2000 and *** also analyzed the driving forces of the desertification and its *** constructing regression models by using all the relevant variables and considering the lagged effects as well as fixed effects,we quantified the exact role of different factors causing rocky land desertification in the study area with some new *** new findings in this study are greatly helpful for preserving,restoring and reconstructing the degraded mountain environment in Guangxi and other karst areas in Southwest China,and also for alleviating poverty in the rural areas in the future.

Sandy desertification is a land degradation characterized by wind erosion, mainly resulted from the excessive human activities in arid, semiarid and part of sub-humid regions in North China. It is one of main kinds of desertification/land degradation as well as water-soil erosion and salinization in China. Rapid and continuous spread of sandy desertification during last 50 years has created a major environmental and socio-economic problem in North China. Remote sensing monitored results in 2000 showed that the sandy desertified land area has been 3..57× 104.km2. The area of potential to slightly sandy desertified land is 13.93. 104.km2, moderately land 9.977×104.km2, severely land 7.909 ×104.km2 and very severely land 6.756×104.km2. Sandy desertification mainly occurs in the semi-arid mixed farming-grazing zone and its northern rangeland zone, semi-arid dryland rainfed cropping zone and arid oasis-desert margin zone. The average annually developmental rate of sandy desertified land increased from 2,100 km2 ·a-1 in 1976-1988 to 3.600 km2 · a-1 in 1988-2000. The basic status of sandy desertification in North China is 'overall deterioration, while local rehabilitation'. Already achieved rehabilitation results and monitoring assessment show that about 60% of desertified land in North China can be restored under the conditions of rational land-use ways and intensity.

The worldwide fallout of caesium-13. (13.Cs) associated with the nuclear weapon tests during the 1950s and 1960s has provided a valuable man-made tracer for studies of soil erosion and sediment delivery. But relatively few researchers have used it to estimate wind erosion. In this note, the 13.Cs technique is introduced into the studies of wind erosion and its modern processes inthe Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Two 13.Cs reference inventories of 982.11 and 2 3.6.04.Bq · m-2 wereestablished preminarily, distributed in the south and middle-north parts of the studied arearespectively. By analyzing the patterns of 13.Cs depth profiles from sampling sites, the aeolianprocesses of erosion and deposition in nearly 4. years have been revealed, i.e. the shrub coppicedunes (S1) and semi-fixed dunefields (S3. experienced the alternation of erosion and deposition,while the grasslands (S4.
