Polymorphisms of ICAM-1 are associated with gastric cancer risk and prognosis

AIM:To investigate the association between single nu-cleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and the risk,biological behavior and prognosis of gastric cancer (GC) in Chinese ***:The study group consisted of 332 GC patients and 380 healthy *** was performed using polymerase chain reaction and the results were confirmed by *** associa-tion of ICAM-1 K469E polymorphisms and the risk of GC were studied,and the correlation of ICAM-1 K469E polymorphisms with the clinicopathological parameters and prognosis of the patients with complete clinical and follow-up data was ***:Carriers of AA genotype had a significantly increased risk of GC compared with carriers of AG and GG genotypes [odds ratios:1.36;95% confidence in-terval (CI):1.01-1.84;P=0.041].GC patients with AA genotype were more prone to distant metastasis than those carrying AG and GG genotypes (18.9% vs 7.0%,respectively;P=0.002).In addition,patients at stage Ⅳ had significantly more carriers of AA genotype than those of AG and GG genotype (27.4% vs 16.9%,re-spectively;P=0.046).Follow-up study showed that the overall cumulative survival rate was 23.7% in AA geno-type group and 42.9% in AG and GG genotypes *** univariate analysis,AA genotype was correlated with the overall cumulative survival (P=0.034).But in multi-variate analysis,ICAM-1 polymorphism was not an inde-pendent prognostic factor for the overall survival (relative risk,1.145;95% CI:0.851-1.540;P=0.370).CONCLUSION:Polymorphisms of ICAM-1 K469E can be a useful biomarker for identifying individuals with higher risk of GC,predicting disease progression,and guiding individualized treatment.

STUDY ON THE OPTIMIZATION OF TRANSPORT CONTROL POLICY IN COMMUNICATION NETWORK

In communication networks with policy-based Transport Control on-Demand (TCoD) function,the transport control policies play a great impact on the network effectiveness. To evaluate and optimize the transport policies in communication network,a policy-based TCoD network model is given and a comprehensive evaluation index system of the network effectiveness is put forward from both network application and handling mechanism perspectives. A TCoD network prototype system based on Asynchronous Transfer Mode/Multi-Protocol Label Switching (ATM/MPLS) is introduced and some experiments are performed on it. The prototype system is evaluated and analyzed with the comprehensive evaluation index system. The results show that the index system can be used to judge whether the communication network can meet the application requirements or not,and can provide references for the optimization of the transport policies so as to improve the communication network effectiveness.

Formation,distribution and risk control of landslides in china

china is a country with a large population as well as frequent landslides. The formation and distribution of landslides in china are determined by its special topography, complex geological environment, active earthquake environment and unusual climate features. This paper analyzes the main features and distribution of 200 catastrophic landslides that occurred in china since 1900. The relationships among the distribution of landslides and topographic conditions, geological structure, climate features and strong earthquake environment are analyzed. The features of landslide-triggering factors and critical conditions in different areas have also been considered. Based on the above-mentioned work, the authors have undertaken the studies of landslide susceptibility assessment. The study is performed according to the topographic and geological features, which are the main triggering factors that affect the landslides. The china’s mainland can be divided into 12 zones, including 4 high susceptibility zones, 7 medium susceptibility zones and 1 low susceptibility zone, according to landslide proneness. Considering the number of life loss and extent of property loss caused by landslides in those 12 zones, the risk evaluation results are listed as follows: 2 extremely high-risk zones, 5 high-risk zones, 2 medium-risk zones and 3 low-risk zones. Taking the number of life loss caused by landslides as the standard of risk level, the paper also analyzes the change in landslide risk level and main risk control measures in china since 1990s. Based on the risk level of landslides in other countries or regions, the acceptable landslide risk level in china has been proposed.

Forestation has been encouraged worldwide due to increasing demand for forest products, and for its ecological benefits such as soil erosion control and sediment reduction. However, forestation reduces runoff, thus potentially aggravating water shortages in arid regions. In order to quantitatively estimate the possible water yield reductions caused by forestation in an arid region, a small watershed (the Pailugou watershed) in the Qilian Mountains of northwest china was chosen as a study area. The responses of hydrological dynamics to different forestation scenarios in the study area were simulated using the TOPOG model. The results showed that forestation could lead to a complete loss of runoff at the site scale. At the watershed scale, a 10% increase in forest coverage led to a runoff reduction of 25.6 mm, equivalent to 13% of the runoffin the un-forested watershed. However, due to climatological and topographical constraints, the potential forest distribution occupied only 46.3% of the watershed area, and runoff reduction was estimated to reach a maximum of 60% when the forest cover ratio increased from 0.41% to 46.1%. Actual forest coverage is 36% in the study area, thus the water yield will be reduced with any further increase in forest area. Our study suggested that a trade-off between the numerous benefits of forest coverage increase and its negative impact on water yield should be carefully addressed in arid regions with inherently severe water-shortage.

Identification, characteristic and phylogenetic analysis of type II DNA topoisomerase gene in Giardia lamblia

The genes encoding type II DNA topoisomerases were investigated in Giardia lamblia genome, and a type IIA gene,GlTop 2 was identified. It is a single copy gene with a 4476 bp long ORF without intron. The deduced amino acidsequence shows strong homology to eukaryotic DNA Top 2. However, some distortions were found, such as sixinsertions in the ATPase domain and the central domain, a ~100 aa longer central domain; a ~200 aa shorter C-terminaldomain containing rich charged residues. These features revealed by comparing with Top 2 of the host, human, mightbe helpful in exploiting drug selectivity for antigiardial therapy. Phylogenetic analysis of eukaryotic enzymes showedthat kinetoplastids, plants, fungi, and animals were monophyletic groups, and the animal and fungi lineages shared amore recent common ancestor than either did with the plant lineage; microsporidia grouped with fungi. However, unlikemany previous phylogenetic analyses, the “amitochondriate” G. lamblia was not the earliest branch but diverged aftermitochondriate kinetoplastids in our trees. Both the finding of typical eukaryotic type IIA topoisomerase and the phylo-genetic analysis suggest G. lamblia is not possibly as primitive as was regarded before and might diverge after theacquisition of mitochondria. This is consistent with the recent discovery of mitochondrial remnant organelles in G. lamblia.

Demonstration of Dark Soliton Solutions Found by Inverse Scattering Transform

One of the basic problems about the inverse scattering transform for solving a completely integrable nonlinear evolutions equation is to demonstrate that the Jost solutions obtained from the inverse scattering equations of Cauchy integral satisfy the Lax equations. Such a basic problem still exists in the procedure of deriving the dark soliton solutions of the NLS equation in normal dispersion with non-vanishing boundary conditions through the inverse scattering transform. In this paper, a pair of Jost solutions with same analytic properties are composed to be a 2×2 matrix and then another pair are introduced to be its right inverse confirmed by the Liouville theorem. As they are both 2×2 matrices, the right inverse should be the left inverse too, based upon which it is not difficult to show that these Jost solutions satisfy both the first and second Lax equations. As a result of compatibility condition, the dark soliton solutions definitely satisfy the NLS equation in normal dispersion with non-vanishing boundary conditions.

INFLUENCES OF ACID POST-TREATMENT ON THE MORPHOLOGY OF SOAP-FREE P(MMA-EA-MAA)PARTICLES PREPARED BY SEEDED EMULSION POLYMERIZATION

Soap-free poly（methyl methacrylate-ethyl acrylate-methacrylic acid） latex particles with narrow size distribution were synthesized by seeded emulsion polymerization, and the porous particles were created by a stepwise alkali/acid treatment method. Effects of acid treatment conditions on the particle morphology were investigated. Results show that one to three pores were formed inside most of particles after post-treatment. At pH 7.0, when the treatment temperature was lower than 70℃, the size of particles and the volume of pores remained almost unchanged, and these two values increased significantly when the temperature was higher than 70℃. Both the particle size and the pore volume decreased with the increase of initial pH value and treatment time in the acid treatment. As the pH was below 4.0 and the treatment time was longer than 180 min, the particles shrunk in size.

The symmetry-adapted-duster configuration-interaction method is used to investigate the spectroscopicproperties of ~7Li_2(A^1∑_u^+) over the internuclear distance ranging from 2.4ao to *** complete potential energycurves are calculated at numbers of basis *** the ab initio calculated points are fitted to the analytic MurrellSorbie function and then employed to compute the spectroscopic *** comparison,the spectroscopic constantsreproduced by the potential attained at D95(3df,3pd) are found to be very close to the experiments,a^d the values (T_e,D_e,R_e,ω_e,ω_eχ_e,α_e and B_e) are of 1.732 93 eV,1.161 36 eV,0.313 27 nm,251.95 cm^(-1),1.623 cm^(-1),0.005 35 cm^(-1),and0.490 cm^(-1),*** the potential obtained at D95(3df,3pd),the totally 75 vibrational states are found whenJ=*** vibrational levels,the classical turning points and the inertial rotation constants of the first 68 vibrationalstates are calculated for the first time and compared with the available *** agreement is *** centrifugal distortion constants of the first 32 vibrational states are also reported for the first *** reasonabledissociation limit for ~7Li_2(A^1∑_u^+) is deduced using the calculated results at present.
