The Mesozoic—cenozoic latitudinal displacement amounts of terranes (or blocks) in the Qinghai—Tibet plateau were calculated in paleomagnetism. These terranes (or blocks) include Tarim and Qaidam blocks, East Kunlun, Baryan Har, Qiangtang, Lhasa and Himalaya terranes. The calculated results are listed in table 1. These results show that:(1) There was the latitudinal displacement difference between central area and southwestern area in the Tarim southern margin since the lower Cretaceous. There was a southward latitudinal movement from the beginning of middle Jurassic or upper Jurassic (Zhou Qingjie, 1992). The northward movement amounts of the Tarim northern margin since the Paleocene are greater than that of the Tarim southern margin. Tarim southern margin has moved northward about 1100km since the Paleocene, Tarim northern margin has done about 1700km. Qaidam has moved northward about 3100km since lower\|middle Jurassic. The northward displacement amount of Qaidam since Paleocene is about 810km, near to that of the central area, Tarim southern margin.

Phytoliths are noncrystalline minerals that form inside cells and cell walls of different parts of *** carbon in living cells can be occluded in phytoliths during plant *** has been documented that the occluded carbon within phytoliths is an important long-term terrestrial carbon reservoir that has a major role in the global carbon *** millet and foxtail millet have become typical diy-farming crops in china since the Neolithic *** study of carbon conservation within phytoliths in these crops could provide insights into anthropogenic influences on the carbon *** this study,we analyzed the carbon content in phytoliths of common millet and foxtail *** results indicated that(1) common millet and foxtail millet contained 0.136%±0.070%and 0.12.%±0.085%phytohfh-occluded carbon(PhytOC) on a dry mass basis,respectively;(2) based on the mean annual production of common millet and foxtail millet in the last 10 years,the phytolith occluded carbon accumulation rate of common millet and foxtail millet was approximately 0.023±0.015 and 0.020±0.010 t CO ha a respectively;(3) assuming a similar phytolith occluded carbon accumulation rate as for common millet(the highest accumulation rate was 0.038 t CO ha a), this could result in the sequestration of 2.37×10 t CO per year for the 62.4×10 ha dry-farming crops in *** there was a decline in the annual production rate and planting area of foxtail millet during 1949 to 2008,the total phytolith carbon sequestration rate was 7×l0 t CO within the 60-year ***,phytolith occluded carbon has not yet been fully considered as a global carbon ***,this carbon fraction is probably one of the best candidates for the missing carbon sink.

Eight sporopollen zones have been divided based on the results of high-resolution sporopollen analysis of Core B10 in the southern Yellow Sea. Based on the results along with ^14C datings and the subbottom profiling data,climatic and environmental changes since the last stage of late Pleistocene are discussed. The main conclusions are drawn as follows: (1) the vegetation evolved in the process of coniferous forest-grassland containing broad-leaved trees→coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest→coniferons and broad-leaved mixed forest-grassland prevailed by coniferous trees→coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest-grassland containing evergreen broad-leaved trees→coniferons and broad-leaved mixed forest-grassland prevailed by broadleaved trees→deciduous broad-leaved forest-meadow containing evergreen broad-leaved trees→coniferous and broadleaved mixed forest-grassland prevailed by broad-leaved trees→coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest containing evergreen broad-leaved trees; (2) eight stages of climate changes are identified as the cold and dry stage, the temperate and wet stage, the cold and dry stage, the warm and dry stage, the temperate and wet stage, the hot and dry stage, the temperate and dry stage, then the warm and dry stage in turn; (3) the sedimentary environment developed from land,to littoral zone, to land again, then to shore-neritic zone; and (4) the Yellow Sea Warm Current formed during early-Holocene rather than Atlantic stage.

Setting up the hypostratotype of late Precambrian is the main aim of the research on the Meso-and Neoproterozoic in North *** chronostratigraphic position is the key in this study. However,many key horizons have not been calibrated with the high-quality isotopic *** the reported new U-Pb age with the Sensitive High-Resolution Ion Microprobe（SHRIMPⅡ）,a zircon U- Pb age was obtained of the ash bed in the Xiamaling Formation in North china Plate,yielding a weighted mean;Pb/;U age of 1368±12.*** is the first SHRIMP U-Pb age from the Xiamaling Formation in the North china Plate,and represents the depositing time of the middle part of the Xiamaling *** zircon age plays an important role to understanding geological evolution of the North china Plate during Meso-and Neoproterozoic.

Thick cenozoic deposits were shed into the foreland basin of the Tian Shan Range,providing great potential for understanding the relationship between tectonic history and paleoclimatic *** the present study, we compiled a pollen record for the interval 26.5-2.6 Ma based on a palynological analysis of a latest Oligocene-Pliocene stratigraphic sequence in the northern foreland basin of the Tian *** results indicate that a remarkable warm climate occurred at ca.18-15 Ma ago,corresponding to the Mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum,while a change to an arid climate occurred at 6 Ma,marked by an increase in the droughttolerant herb taxa Artemisia and *** latter change was coincident with the late cenozoic climatic deterioration recorded at high latitudes in the Northern *** inferred climatic events are further supported by the results of principal component analysis of the pollen data,such records are important archives in reconstructing the paleoclimate of the Asian interior.

In this paper,we report 3780-m-thick Neogene deposits accumulated in the Kuqa foreland basin of southern Tianshan range,providing great potential for studying both tectonics and paleoclimatic *** on palynological evidence,we discuss the paleoenvironmental changes as well as the interplay between regional uplift and climatic change in the region *** results indicate that the vegetation and climatic changes from 13.3 to 7 Ma were response to global climatic *** 7 Ma,the uplift of the southern Tianshan range partially affects vegetation and climatic *** global cooling and the rainshadow effect of uplifted high mountains affect the enhanced arid climate initiated ca.5.23 Ma *** climatic changes are important archives in reconstructing paleoclimate of the Asian interior.

The mineralization ages reported in the past in the Tuwu-Yandong copper district not only are different,but also fall into the Hercynian *** study has achieved 9 zircon and 7 apatite fission track analysis *** zircon fission track ages range from 158 Ma to 289 Ma and the apatite ages are between 64 Ma and 140 *** mineralization accords with the regional tectonics in the copper *** consider that the zircon fission track age could reveal the mineralization age based on annealing zone temperature of 140―300℃ and retention temperature of ～250℃ for zircon fission track,and metallogenetic temperature of 12.―350℃ in this ore *** three mineralization epochs have been identified,i.e.,289―276 Ma,232―200 Ma and 165―158 Ma,and indicate occurrence of the min-eralization in the Indosinian and Yanshan *** to apatite fission track ages,the three tectonic-mineralizing epochs are 140―132 Ma,109―97 Ma and 64 Ma,which means age at about 100℃ after the *** three epochs lasted 146 Ma,108 Ma and about 100 Ma from ～250℃ to ～100℃ and trend decrease from early to *** is shown by the fission track modeling that this district underwent three stages of geological thermal histories,stable in Cretaceous and cooling both before Cretaceous and after 20 Ma.

Locating the quantitized natural sediment fingerprints is an important work for marine sediment dynamics *** total of 146 sediment samples were collected from the Shelf of the East china Sea and five rivers,including Huanghe （Yellow）,Changjiang （Yangtze）,Qiantang,Ou and Min *** sediment grain size and the contents of rare earth elements （REEs） were measured with laser particle size analyzer and ICP-MS *** results show that absolute REE content （ΣREE） and the concentration ratio of light REEs to heavy REEs （L/HREE） are different in the sediments among those *** are higher REE contents in being less than 2 m and 2–31 μm fractions in the Changjiang Estuary surface *** REE contents of bulk sediment are dominated by the corresponding values of those leading *** of sediment is higher close to the estuaries and declines seaward on the inner shelf of the East china Sea （ECS）.The L/HREE ratio has a tendency of increase southward from 28 ？ *** conditions plays a predominate role on spacial distributions of the surficial sediment’s REE *** some situations,the currents tend to remove the coarser light grains from initial populations,as well as the deposit of the finer heavy mineral *** other situations,the currents will change the ratio of sediment constituents,such as ratio between silts and clays in the *** a result,the various values of REE or L/HREE ratio in different bulk sediments are more affected by the change of size-fractions than source *** the long-term stable hydrodynamic environment,i.e.,the East china Sea Shelf,new sediment transport model based on the size and density gradation concept may help to understand the spatial distribution patterns of REE parameters.

The East Asian monsoon probably existed as early as at the Palaeogene/Neogene ***,its evolutionary process is still less well known owing mainly to the lack of long,continuous palaeoenvironmental *** recently reported Miocene(22-6.2 Ma) and late Miocene-Pliocene(7.1-3.5 Ma) loess-palaeosol sequences from the western chinese Loess Plateau(CLP) provide new insights into the evolution of the monsoon ***,reports on the bioclimatic indicators from these deposits and the subsequent reconstruction of the palaeomonsoon are *** we present a Pliocene terrestrial mollusk record from the western CLP and discuss the possible impact of isolation gradients on the East Asian summer monsoon. Our results show that most peak values of the dominant thermo-humidiphilous mollusk taxa,Metodontia and Punctum,a proxy of the East Asian summer monsoon,approximately correspond to maxima of mean summer insolation gradient between middle and low latitudes as well as some maximum values of the 35°N insolation,suggesting a possible causal link between the summer monsoon and the insolation parameters. The major frequencies from spectrum analysis of the sum of the two warmth- and moisture-loving taxa through the loess-palaeosol succession match those obtained from the mean summer insolation-gradient variations between middle and low latitudes over this geological period,providing further evidence for such a causal *** summer insolation gradient between middle and low latitudes could influence atmospheric circulation(in the present condition the East Asian summer monsoon).Any elevated mean summer insolation gradients between middle and low latitudes would have intensified the East Asian summer monsoon and the flux of moisture and heat over the oceans to the interior region including the CLP, creating favorable conditions for the expansion of the mollusk *** such,the mollusk record from the loess-palaeosol deposits in the western CLP provides ev
