Interactions between hotspots and the Southwest Indian Ridge during the last 90 Ma:Implications on the formation of oceanic plateaus and intra-plate seamounts

This study investigates the relationship between the hotspot-ridge interaction and the formation of oceanic plateaus and seamounts in the Southwest Indian *** first calculated the relative distance between the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) and relevant hotspots on the basis of models of plate reconstruction,and then calculated the corresponding excess magmatic anomalies of the hotspots on the basis of residual bathymetry and Airy *** results reveal that the activities of the Marion hotspot can be divided into three main phases:interaction with the paleo-Rodrigues triple junction (73.6-68.5 Ma),interaction with the SWIR (68.5-42.7 Ma),and intra-plate volcanism (42.7-0 Ma).These three phases correspond to the formation of the eastern,central,and western parts of the Del Cano Rise,*** magnitude and apparent periodicity of the magmatic volume flux of the Marion hotspot appear to be dominated by the hotspot-ridge *** periodicity of the Marion hotspot is about 25 Ma,which is much longer than that of the Hawaii and Iceland hotspots (about 15 Ma).

Comparison on ecological and physiological characteristics of Drepanopus bispinosus (Copepoda:Calanoida) between two populations in Burton Lake and Fletcher Lake, two Antarctic lagoons

Calanoida copepod, Drepanopus bispinosus occurred in both saline lakes, Burton ( S=40) and Fletcher ( S = 56) in Vestfold Hills, Antarctica. Evident differences between two populations in biology and physiology were observed in September and December, 1984. The population in the Burton lake was denser with stronger body and more tolerant to temperature and salinity than that in the Fletcher Lake, reflecting their possible differences of genetic or nongenetic adaptation. The population in the Burton lake has been adaptated to the lake environment, and the population in the Flethcer Lake is in the acclimatization course in the lake habitat.

Distribution of indicator dinoflagellates in the East china Sea

-The material discussed in this paper is from four cruises which were carried out in May -June, 1986 (spring), July -August, 1987(summer) .October -November, 1988(autumn)and December, 1987(winter)respectively. Identified dinoflagellates were 141 species (including varieties and forms) belonging to 18 *** to the distribution and ecological characteristics of dinoflagellates species, we can divide them into three groups: 1) Hyporhaline-neritic group: they are distributed only in type Ⅲ and typeⅣ water and they perform an evident function indicating continental coast water; 2) Eurythermic-euryhaline group represented by Protoperidinium depressum, Gentium fusus, etc. They are fond of perching in mixing water which character is similar to that of coast water even though they are distributed in different water systems; 3) Hyperthermic-hyperhaline group: on the basis of varying degrees to which they tolerate temperature and salinity, we can divide them into two sub-groups: euryhyperthermic-euryhyperha-line subgroup and stenohyperthermic- stenohyperhaline subgroup. The first subgroup is represented by Pyrocystis pseudoxoctiluca whose adaptability reaction occurred with the changing of hydrographic environment. The second subgroup is tropic oceanic species which can serve as a good indicator for Kuroshio in the East china Sea. Its biological boundary coincides well with the hydrographic boundary of Kuroshio water.

Ecological characteristics of the abundance and distribution of bacteria in the waters nearby the front of the hangzhou Bay

Abundance of total bacteria, heterotrophic bacteria, coliform and oil degradable bacteria and their relations with salinity and suspended matter in the frontal waters in the hangzhou Bay are described. The results obtained show that the highest abundances of total bacteria , heterotrophic bacteria are encountered around the front and near the northern shore of the hangzhou Bay, where a positive correlation ( r =0. 70) between the total bacteria abundance and the total suspended matter (TSM) is persent. Moreover,the abundance of oil degradable bacteria being an indicator of oil pollution, is also high in that region.

Transfer of manganese and ferro ions by manganese bacteria

The experimental results of the redox of manganese and ferro ions by manganese bacteria are described. Under the aerobic conditions, the manganese bacteria can oxidate Mn2+ into Mn4+. In the course of the manganese bacteria multiplication, the continual increaes of environmental pH is advantageous to the oxidation of manganese and the rise of environmental temperature helps the bacteria to speed the oxidation of manganese ions. The manganese bacteria can fastly oxidate Fe2+ in the culture containing low vaient ferro into Fe3+, its oxidation speed being faster than that of manganese oxide. Under the anaerobic conditions,the manganese bacteria can reduce high valent ferro in solutioninto low valent ferro and distinctly lower the environmental pH.

Hydrographic features of the plume front in the hangzhou Bay

This front is performed as a group of interfaces among, the water masses situated in the bay. A discussion is also given of the circulation feature in the frontal zone ence of the front.

The features and generation of CWB near the South Shetland Islands in austral summer of 1987

-STD Data obtained from the Third Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition from January to February 1987 in the region near the South Shetland Islands are used to investigate an oceanic front, continental water boundary (CWB), north of the South Shetland Islands. The characteristics of the CWB in surface and subsurface layers as well as deep layer are discussed respectively. The estimations of the geostrophic currents and the baroclinic deformed radius Rbc in this area show that the flow along the front is in the geostrophic equilibrium approximately, and the formation of the front is mainly due to the strong boundary current north of the South Shetland Islands. Its length along the front is estimated to be about 360 km and its width across the front is about 30 km.

Variability of the Kuroshio in the East china Sea in 1995

A modified inverse method is ed to compute the Kuroshio in the East china Sea with the CTD andwind data collected by R/V Chofu Maru during four cruises of 1995. The computed results show that: (1) The volume transport (hereafter VT) of the Kuroshio through fortion PN is 23. 3×106, 34. 1× 106,21. 1× 106 and 26. 7 ×106 m3/s, respectively , during winter, spring, summer and autumn, i. e., its VT is largest in spring but smallest inthe summer of 1995. However, from the statistical average results [e. g., Yuan et al. (1993) ], its VT is largest insummer but smallest in autumn. This means that the year 1995 is an anomalous year, which can also be shown from the T - S distributions. The heat transport (hereafter HT ) through Section PN is 1. 6×1015, 2. 5× 1015, 1. 7 x1015 and 2.1× 1015 W, respectively, during winter, spring, summer and autumn. This shows also that the year 1995is an anomalous year. VT through Section TK (at the Tokara Staik) is the largest in the spring of 1995. (2) Thereare two current cores at Section PN during winter, spring and summer, and three cores in autumn. (3) The Kuroshiovelocities at Section PN are stronger in spring and autumn than those in the winter and summer of 1995. (4) Thereare countercurrents under and east of the Kuroshio at Section PN. (5 ) The average rate of heat transfer in the computed area from the ocean to the atmosphere is 6.28×103, -0.83× 103, -2.09×103 and 2.49×103J/(cm2.d), respectively, during winter, spring, summer and autumn.

Zonal discrepancy of iodine in the West Pacific Ocean and its adjacent seas

The species of iodine in the water samples collected from the west Pacific Ocean and its adjacent seas were analysed. Results show that the concentration of total inorganic iodine appears higher in the south than that in the north of the Equator. The iodide concentration is distributed symmetrically on both sides of the Equator in tropic and subtropic zones and it decreases away from the Equator. Around the Antarctic Divergence iodide concentration approaches its minimum in the surface waters .which only accounts for 10% of the total iodine. The dissolved organic iodine concentration keeps constant generally either in horizontal or in vertical. Discussions on the relationships of iodine with chemical, biological and hydrological factors reveal that iodine has a transitional behavior between conservative and biodepleting elements; I/S ratio is of a certain stability on a vast scale, however, it may be largely affected by organism activity in some zones. Besides, evidence shows that iodine is adsorbed by organic particles in surface water but released as the remineral-ization of the organic particles occurs near the bottom of euphotic layer, which makes iodine look as if it is depleted by organisms like the nutrients.
