Cut marks and terminal Pleistocene hominids in the Ma'anshan site:Evidence for meat-eating

In this paper, cut marks on the long bones of class Ⅱ sized animals in the Ma'anshann site are studied. Based on the location and frequencies of the long bone cut marks, the distribution characteristics are analyzed as follows: (1) cut mark frequencies in the lower layer (LL) are much higher than those of the upper; (2) in the LL cut mark frequency of the upper limbs is the highest, and that of the middle and lower limbs is lower and the lowest; (3) In the upper layer (UL) the cut mark frequency, does not spread as orderly as in the LL. The data are compared to those of the experiment and it is demonstrated that values of the LL all fall into the experimental 95% confidence intervals, and the cut mark frequencies of the upper, middle and lower limbs coincide with those of the experiment; while the values of the UL are much lower, of which, those of the humerus, femur and radius are out of the intervals, and the frequencies of the upper, middle and lower limbs are far more different from those of the experiment. It implies that the earlier hominids (of the LL) defleshed the limbs of the class Ⅱ sized animals with stone tools more completely than the later hominids. With the evidence of burning marks, it is suggested that the difference on the roasting behaviors derived the cut mark difference of the Ma'anshan UL and LL.

The end-Permian mass extinction is one of the largest bioevents in geological history. The benthic groups such as fusulinids, corals and bryozoans, nevertheless, suffered most severely at the end of the Guadalupian, which was regarded as the first phase of the event. As a consequence of the pre-Lopingian global regression, the large-scale carbonate platforms that used to be the habitats for the endemic benthos fauna disappeared in the peri-Pangean region, and the relic shelves in the Palaeotethys also disappeared.

Fossil leaves resembling Nothofagaceae have been investigated from the Eocene of western Antarctica and a new form genus Nothofagofolia is proposed for these kinds of fossils. Some new specimens belonging to this form genus are described. They were collected from the Fossil Hill locality of Fildes Peninsula, King George Island, South Shetland Islands, western Antarctica. Two new species, two new combinations and an unnamed species are reported. A number of published Nothofagus leaf fossils from the same locality are discussed and revised. As a result of these studies of Nothofagus leaf morphology, we conclude that (1) Nothofagus probably originated in high latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere during the middle-late Late Cretaceous and diversified, dispersed gradually to the lower latitudes of the same hemisphere; (2) leaf morphological characters are significant for the systematics of the family Nothofagaceae, especially at the intrageneric level; and (3) extant species of Nothofagus known from southern temperate areas have more primitive leaf morphological characters and lower leaf ranks than those from tropical mountains as well as those of the Fagaceae and Betulaceae.

Ostrich eggshell beads and fragments collected from SDG site reflect primordial art and a kind of symbolic behavior of modern humans. Based on stratigraphic data and OSL dating, these ostrich eggshell beads are probably in Early Holocene (< 10 ka BP). Two different prehistoric manufacturing pathways are usually used in the manufacture of ostrich eggshell beads in Upper Paleolithic. According to statistic analysis of the characteristics of ostrich eggshell beads, Pathway 1 is identified from these collections. In pathway 1, blanks are drilled prior to being trimmed to rough discs. They exhibit great potential for the study of the origin of primordial art and the development of ancient cultures and provide important data for studying behavioral options adopted by hominids in SDG area. In addition, they bear important implications for the origin of modern humans in East Asia.

To investigate the organic carbon isotope excursions in the non-marine Permian-Triassic boundary sequences and correlate this with that in the marine sequences, 126 samples were determined for the carbon ratios (δ13Corg) of kerogen samples spanning 102 meters from the Guodikeng formation to the Lower Triassic Jiucaiyuan formation in the southern limb of Dalongkou Anticline (SDA) and Taoshuyuan sections of Xinjiang, china. Associated fossil assemblages suggested the P-T boundary is in the middle part of Guodikeng formation (proposed P-T boundary at A, B or C in figure below), and provided significantly biostratigraphic overlaps during the Permian-Triassic transition.

Based the distribution and morphological analyses of the archaeocyathan, four evolutionary stages of archaeocyaths can be recognised on the Yangtze Platform, corresponding to the middle and late Qiongzhusian, early Canglangpuan, middle Canglangpuan, and late Canglangpuan. In general, archaeocyaths displayed the following evolutionary trends: 1) outer wall gradually became complicated, e.g. a simple wall evolved into a concentrically porous one, and then into a compound one;2) the percentage of archaeocyaths with colony growth gradually increased;3) the archaeocyath septa gradually became sparsely porous and aporous;and 4) the inner wall gradually became complicated, as the inner wall pores became smaller, and some inner walls developed microporous sheaths.

Countless fossil embryo Olivooides and the hatched larvae,juveniles and adults(the latter two kinds are Punctatus) are recovered by means of acid maceration from the fine-crystalline to medium-crystalline phosphatic limestone and phosphatic micrite of Early Cambrian Kuanchuanpu Formation at the Shizhonggou section,near Kuanchuanpu Village,Ningqiang County,Shaanxi Province,*** the technique of Synchrotron X-ray Tomographic Microscopy,the 3D internal structure of Olivooides and Punctatus is *** morphological and statistic analyses are also given to the stellae structure of Olivooides and Punctatus,which indicates that this structure is a result of adaptive evolution to a lifestyle of fast-attaching after hatching,probably with the function of mucilage *** internal structure of Punctatus is described and *** ovum-like structure,a common internal feature of Punctatus,is considered as the taphonomic structure,rather than eggs or other biological *** structure is thought to be formed after the burial of the animal and before or during the *** original internal structure of Punctatus is assumed to be tabulae-filled,with soft body grown on them.
