The gain tilt of the erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and the nonlinear distortion in an AM-VSB CATV optical fiber transmission system with a cascade of EDFAs are analyzed. It demonstrates that the nonlinear distortion induced by the light source and the EDFA would be counteracted each other to a certain degree as long as the EDFA has a negative gain tilt. As a result, an optimal EDFA negative gain tilt is suggested as a solution to selfcomensation of the nonlinear distortion.

A new type of reflector antenne is proposed, which applies the 1 D Fresnel zone phase correction to the classical parabolic cylindrical reflector, providing an alternative to the dual parabolic cylindrical ones discussed by Sanad and Shafai [1] . The focusing characteristics of the new reflector are analyzed by physical optics method, and numerical results are illustrated to evaluate its applicability.

Chaos synchronization of Chen chaotic system for parameters unknown isdiscussed in this paper using a scalar output. Using the concept of conditional Lyapunov exponents,the negativity of all Lyapunov exponents shows the synchronization of transmitter systems withreceiver systems even though system parametes are not known to receiver systems.

Survivability is one of the important issues in ATM-based networks since even a single network element failure may cause a serious data loss. This paper introduces a new restoration mechanism based on multi-layer ATM survivable network management architecture. This mechanism integrates the general control and restoration control by establishing the Working Vps logical network, Backup Vps logical network and spare logical network in order to optimally utilize the network resources while maintaining the restoration requirements.

With the increasing popularity of the computer network, more and more attention is paid to the reliability of the network. To improve the reliability of the communication network in the stored program control exchange, the author propounds a redundant method supported by a kind of the double local area network. Fault detection, hardware switching and system rebuilding are processed automatically by the administration of the software. The method can improve not only the system′s reliability but also its communication efficiency. It has been implemented in the pSOSystem environment in a super stored program control exchange.
