The structure of In-1 %Cu and In-5%Cu (mass fraction) alloy melts werestudied at different temperatures above liquidus by using a high-temperature X-ray diffractometerand were compared with that of pure In melt. Experimental results show that with the addition of 1%Cu or 5% Cu, the thermal contraction phenomenon of atom clusters occurs in melts with thetemperature increasing like pure In melt. With the addition of 1% Cu, the thermal contraction ofatom clusters increases and the contraction is not homogeneous in the whole measurement temperaturerange. The sudden change and noticeable contraction can be found in the range of 280-390 ℃. Thetemperature range of the sudden change is lower than that of pure In melt. With the addition of 5%Cu, the thermal contraction of atom clusters decreases and the contraction is not consistent in thewhole measurement temperature range. The anomalous change can be measured at about 600 ℃. At thesame superheating temperature, the nearest interatomic distance r_1 of the melts containing copperis smaller than that of pure In melt, implying that the cluster structure of melts containing copperis more compact.

The transmission and fluorescence spectra of Yb 3+ doped Bi 2O 3 3B 2O 3 glass were measured. The emission cross section have been evaluated using the measured absorption apectra and principle of reciprocity. The measured long lifetime τ m(1 0 ms) and large emission cross section σ em (1 423 pm 2) indicate that Yb 3+ doped Bi 2O 3 3B 2O 3 glass is a promisiong laser material.

By using the spark plasma sintering process, Ti2AlC/TiAlcomposite with the addition of Niobium （Nb） was prepared in-situ and the microstructure of Ti2AlC/TiAl （Nb） composite was investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy （TEM） and high-resolution electron microscopy （HREM）. The results indicate that new-formed Ti2AIC particles disperse with a high degree of uniformity and well combine with the matrix. In the area of phase interface the d-spaces of Ti2AlC （100） and TiAI （110） were measured as 0.2648 nm and 0.2991 nm,respectively. The atom arrangement beside the interface was only partly corresponding, existing in semicoherent state. On the contrary, in the area of grain interface the d-spaces of TiAl （100） and TiAl （110） were measured as 0.2462 nm and 0.2631 nm,respectively and the atom arrangement beside the interface was almost corresponding, existing in coherent state.

The Al-Ni-La-Ce-Pr-Nd amorphous ribbon with a super-thickness of 140 mm has been produced by the melt spinning technique. The thickness is as twice as that achieved by the melt spinning technique in the corresponding period (the largest thickness of 65 mm). The crystallization was characterized by using a differential scanning calorimetry. The activation energies are calculated based on the Kissinger equation and the effects of the La, Ce, Pr and Nd on the glass forming ability of Al-based alloy are discussed in the paper.

The green nanocomposites of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)(PHBV) with various cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) contents were prepared by solution casting *** effects of CNCs on the crystallization behavior,spherulitic morphology,crystal structure and hydrophilic property of PHBV were studied by differential scanning calorimeter(DSC),polarized optical microscope(POM),wide-angle X-ray diffraction(WAXD) and static water contact angle *** is found that the CNCs act as an effective nucleation agent for crystallization of PHBV,inducing an increase in the melt crystallization temperature of the nanocomposites.A study of the non-isothermal crystallization kinetics further illustrated that overall crystallization rate of PHBV in the nanocomposites was faster than that of neat PHBV,but exhibited a decrease in the crystallinity and the spherulite size of PHBV. Furthermore,the contact angle decreased from 60.1°for neat PHBV to 32.5°for the nanocomposites with 10%CNCs(mass fraction).

The MAO (Micro-Arc Oxidation) process is applied to a eutectic Al-Si alloy(Al-12.0 percent Si-l.0 percent Cu-0.9 percent Mg (mass fraction)). The oxide ceramic layer wasfabricated with about 220 mum thickness and 3000 Hv micro-hardness. By XRD (X-ray diffractometry)and DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) analyses, the oxide layer consists of amorphous Al_2O_3,which is distinct from the results reported by the other researchers. The SEM photographs of suchlayer show that the layer is fixed tightly on the substrate alloy. So this alloy can he used in thehigh temperature and friction environment alter it is treated with such process.

Ti/Al 2O 3 composite with improved mechanical properties was synthesized by th e spark plasma sintering. The effect of Nb on the microstructure of the composit e was analyzed by TEM, SEM and so on. The experimental results indicate that the bending strength, fracture toughness, micro-hardness and relative density of t he composite are 897.29MPa, 17.38MPa·m 1/2, 17.13GPa and 99.24% respec tively when adding 1.5vol%Nb. The bending strength is improved by reason of form ing dislocation ring and transfering fracture mode from intergranular to mixture fracture of intergranular and transgranular. The crack propagating is mainly th e deflection bridging. It indicates a reduction of crack driving force and an in crease in crack growth resistance,which results in toughness enhanced.

Optical Properties of a New Two-photon Absorption Dye DEASPI

The two photon absorption (TPA), TPA induced frequency up conversion emission, and two photon pumped (TPP) frequency up conversion lasing properties of a new synthesized dye Trans 4 [p (N,N diethylamino)styryl] N methylpyridinium iodide (DEASPI) were experimentally studied. This new dye has a moderate TPA cross section of σ 2=6.9×10 -48 cm 4·s/photon at 1064 nm, but exhibits a high lasing efficiency. The overall superradiant lasing conversion efficiency is as high as 10.7% at the pump energy of 2.14 mJ.
