Experimental approaches to select tree species for forest restoration:effects of light,water availability and interspecific competition in degraded areas

Knowing what native trees can recr uit on degraded areas allows selecting the best species to restore these ***,as this information is not often available,experimentation is required before large-scale *** study used ex situ experiments to make these decisions on *** with r-strategist plants,excessive solar radiation and water shortage commonly impair tree recruitment in open *** experiments focused on the interactions among these factors and were conducted with three pioneer species from seasonally dry forests of northwest Argentina,Anadenanthera colubrina,Ceiba chodatii and Jacaranda *** of each species were sown at two light levels(sunlight/shade),two rainfall levels(full/reduced)and two levels of interspecific competition(with/without competitor)in a tree *** emergence and survival were monitored over a year and the results indicate that species differentially respond to varying levels of light and *** of *** tolerated water shortages under elevated solar radiation,which are desirable features for forest *** of *** tolerated shade and drought,suggesting that they require shading for establishing in open ***,*** seedlings neither tolerated full sunlight nor water shortages,suggesting that this species requires shading and regular watering if used in *** of the effects of light and water,the survival of all species was reduced by interspecific *** results highlight the importance of experimentation for selecting the best species for forest restoration and can enhance the cost/benefit ratios of these actions.

Rehabilitation of degraded areas in northeastern Patagonia, Argentina: Effects of environmental conditions and plant functional traits on performance of native woody species

Degradation processes affect a vast area of arid and semi-arid lands around the world and damage the environment and people′s health. Degradation processes are driven by human productive activities that cause direct and indirect effects on natural resources, such as species extinction at regional scale, reduction and elimination of vegetation cover, soil erosion, etc. In this context, ecological rehabilitation is an important tool to recover key aspects of the degraded ecosystem. Rehabilitation trials rely on the use of native plant species with characteristics that allow them to obtain high survival and growth rates. The aim of this work was to assess the survival and growth of native woody species in degraded areas of northeastern Patagonia and relate them to plant functional traits and environmental variables. We observed high early and late survival rates, and growth rates in Prosopis flexuosa DC. var. depressa F.A. Roig and schinus johnstonii F.A. Barkley, and low values in Condalia microphylla Cav. and Geoffroea decorticans(Gillies ex Hook. & Arn.) Burkart. Early survival rates were positively associated with specific leaf area(sLA) and precipitation, but negatively associated with wood density, the maximum mean temperature of the warmest month and the minimum mean temperature of the coldest month. Late survival rates were positively associated with sLA and soil organic matter, but negatively associated with plant height and precipitation. The temperature had a positive effect on late survival rates once the plants overcame the critical period of the first summer after they were transplanted to the field. Prosopis flexuosa and s. johnstonii were the most successful species in our study. This could be due to their functional traits that allow these species to acclimatize to the local environment. Chemical and spectroscopic characterization of humic su.s.ances from sediment and riparian soil of a highly polluted urban river(suquía River,Córdoba,Argentina)

The suquia River,the largest urban river in Cordoba(Argentina),has been severely polluted for *** must be taken to restore its environmental quality by managing riparian zones for increased water-self *** current study aimed to characterize organic matter(OM) dynamics and humic su.s.ances(Hs) spectrochemical properties along the lower-middle basin of the suquia *** soil(0-20 cm) and sediment(0-10 cm) samples were collected from a reference location(s1)and four polluted sites(s2-s5) during a low-flow *** contents of soil and sedimentary OM and Hs fractions were analyzed by wet oxidation,as well as Hs Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR) and ultraviolet-visible(uV-Vis) spectrochemical *** OM and Hs fractions from riparian soil were high upstream of Cordoba City(s1 and s2,50.2-50.4 g/kg OM) and within a 50 km downstream location(s5,3..9 g/kg OM) owing to a surplus of fresh plant biomass-carbon(C) *** heterogeneous sediment samples did not show any significant differences among sites(P> 0.05).The lowest values of the ratio of absorbances at 465 and 665 nm(E4/E6)(1.78) and the Δ log K(0.15) coefficient(a measure of Hs maturity degree) were obtained downstream of Cordoba City,for both riparian soil and sediment,indicating that Hs were enriched by more condensed aromatic structures within highly degraded portions of the *** samples exhibited similar IR spectra,implying overlapping recalcitrant-C structures at the functional group level,but with different absorbance *** from the current study constitute a baseline for understanding the chemical nature of Hs from sediment and riparian soil along the suquia River and can be used as a reference for future studies tracking OM compositional changes over time.

Characteristics of climate change in the “significant impact zone” affected by aerosols over eastern China in warm seasons

Through analysis of the distribution pattern and changing characteristics of atmospheric aerosols over the East Asia region during warm seasons in recent 20 a and beyond as well as their possible interac- tive relationship with a variety of meteorological elements, it is found that the high-value zone of aerosol optical depth derived from the Total Ozone Mapping spectrometer (TOMs), its significant negative correlation zones in terms of sunshine duration (sD) and surface air temperature (sAT) and its significant positive correlation zones with low-level cloud amount (LCC) are co-located in the south China region during warm periods. Based on this finding, the region is referred to as a "significant impact zone" (sI zone) affected by aerosols. Then, a comparative analysis is made on variation differ- ences of observed sAT, sD and LCC, etc. in different regions. It is also found that the LCC is increased and the sD is decreased within the "sI zone" over eastern China during the warm season. These characteristics are more evident than those beyond the zone, while the warming trend within the zone is evidently weaker than that outside it. studies show that since recent 20 a, under the influence of aerosols, the LCC tend to increase su.s.antially with a clear decrease of sD and an unnoticeable warming trend within the "sI zone". Comparing with the climate change beyond the zone, the difference is significant. Therefore, the effects of atmospheric aerosols on climate is possibly one of the contri- butions to the difference of climate change existed between the southern and northern parts of the Eastern China during a warm season.

This work presents the preliminary results of the first field calibration campaign performed in the Atacama Desert,Chile,between the 18 and 22 August 2014,called the Atacama Field Campaign(ATAFIC 2014).In situ measurements were performed in order to spectrally characterize the surface reflectance spectra between 0.3.and 2.5μm,radiometric temperature(8.0–14.0μm)and atmospheric measurements.A soil sample was collected and analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy and X-Ray Diffraction techniques to characterize the surface reflectance spectra and mineralogical composition,*** land surface emissivity in addition to GOEs,MODIs and Landsat-8 land surface temperature(LsT)were also *** showed that the spectral features of the Atacama soil and the characteristics of this geographical zone,which is featured as the most hyper-arid and cloudless place in the world,make this area a potential target for surface reflectance *** and night LsT comparison between field and remote sensing data are lower than 2 K and the Root Mean square Error for land surface emissivity is close to 2%.This work opens the possibilities to consider the Atacama Desert as a reference target for calibration and validation activities for earth observation missions’purposes.

Introduction: 68Ga-PsMA-11 is considered the gold standard in detection of micro and oligometastases in advanced prostate cancer, being used for therapeutic planning, as well as, potentially, for evaluating response to treatment. The development of ready-to-use lyophilized kit of PsMA-11 adds quality and safety to the routine use of this radiopharmaceutical and represents a pharmacotechnical challenge as it must preserve the integrity and specificity of the ligand. Methods: PsMA-11 kit formulation was proposed, considering radiolabeling parameters and the preservation of the peptide during the lyophilization process, using mannitol as an excipient. Critical temperature characterization studies were carried out using Dsc equipment and the freeze-drying process was developed. The direct radiolabeling conditions were evaluated and standardized using 68Ge/68Ga generator eluate from two different manufacturers (ITG and Eckert & Ziegler). The radiochemical purity was evaluated by TLC and HPLC. Biological evaluation was carried out with lyophilized PsMA-11 to demonstrate the integrity of the peptide and preservation of biological activity after the lyophilization process. Results: Based on critical temperature characterization studies, the freeze-drying cycle was designed to reach a freezing temperature of around −40˚C and primary drying at 2˚C. using 20 mg of mannitol, an intact and elegant lyophilized cake was obtained. PsMA-11 lyophilized kit was directly labeled with 68Ga eluate from 68Ge/68Ga GMP generators (ITG and Eckert & Ziegler) resulting in % RP > 95% at pH 4.0 to 4.5. The results obtained from in vitro and in vivo biological competition studies confirmed the preservation of PsMA-11 affinity for the receptor after lyophilization. Conclusion: A lyophilized formulation (Kit) of PsMA-11 was successfully obtained, which preserved the integrity and biological activity of the peptide and guaranteed radiolabeling efficiency.

In this paper we develop an a posteriori error analysis of a fully-mixed finite element method for a fluid-solid interaction problem in 2D. The media are governed by the elas-todynamic and acoustic equations in time-harmonic regime, respectively, the transmission conditions are given by the equilibrium of forces and the equality of the corresponding normal displacements, and the fluid is supposed to occupy an annular region surrounding the solid, so that a Robin boundary condition imitating the behavior of the sommerfeld condition is imposed on its exterior boundary. Dual-mixed approaches are applied in both domains, and the governing equations are employed to eliminate the displacenent a of the solid and the pressure p of the fluid. In addition, since both transmission conditions become essential, they are enforced weakly by means of two suitable lahrange multipliers The unknowns of the solid and the fluid are then approximated by a conforming galerkin scheme defined in terms of PEERs elements in the solid, Raviart-Thomas of lowest order in the fluid, and continuous piecewise linear functions on the boundary, As the main con-tribution of this work, we derive a reliable and efficient residual-based a posteriori error estimator for the aforedescribed coupled problem. some numerical results confirming the properties of the estimator are also reported.
