A possible generation mechanism of the strong current over the northwestern shelf of the South china Sea

Continuous observation in late April 2005 on the northwestern shelf of the South china Sea reveals vigorous strong currents, the maximum velocity of which exceeds 3.8 m/s. The strong currents occurred around spring tide period, when the internal tide waves were also expected to be vigorous. Analysis shows that the major peaks of the current power spectrum are in low frequency band. Using a numerical method applied to the actual ocean stratification, we find that the amplitude profiles of the strong current are similar to that of the currents induced by some low-mode internal waves （at diurnal or semi-diurnal frequency）. It indicates that the temporal and spatial features of strong currents were possibly induced by low frequency internal waves.

The change and distribution of inorganic phosphate and dissolved oxygen content in sea water pos-sess a certuin regularity and correlation, which are closely related to the direct influence of biologicalactivities. During the period of phytoplankton bloom, phosphate content may be exhausted and, at thesame time, oxygen content in sea water increases in the euphotic layer. With the decomposition of or-ganic matter, phosphate content increases and oxygen content decreases in the deeper layer. Observations indicate that the motion of an oceanic mesoscale eddy entering the conti-nental shelf will quickly decay. This shows that the surface area of the eddy continuouslyexpands, and the rotational angular velocity gradually decays with time. Starting from avorticity equation for a vertically stratified, horizontally uniform fluid the above process isdynamically analyzed in this paper. Under the condition to consider the Ekman pump effectof the upper and lower boundary layers and side friction, the analytical models for thesurface area expansion and angular velocity decay of the eddy are deduced.

Sedimentary environments in the Hangzhou Bay are introduced by a three-subregional landform pattern and a sedimentation map with six major sedimentation types. The geographic setting, sediment transportation and sedimentation in different subregions are discussed with sediment grain parameters. Sedimentary basin suffering from effect of plume front can be identified by the fine sediments with median ( Mdφ ) 7φ-8φ, clay content 30% - 40% and silt 60% - 70%. Sediment transportation along the plume front seems not to be a direct effect on sedimentary formation of the shoals fringing the south coast of the Hangzhou Bay.

The wide presence of internal solitary waves （ISWs） in the northern South china Sea （SCS） has been confirmed by both Synthetic Aperture Radar （SAR） images and in situ *** ISWs are believed being generated over the varying topography in the Luzon *** typically propagate westwards into the SCS with a diurnal or semidiurnal *** generation sites are,however,not yet solidly *** obtain a clear picture of the ISWs,we designed numerical experiments to analyze the generation and propagation of the ISWs in the Luzon Strait using a 2-dimensional non-hydrostatic *** model current is forced by barotropic or baroclinic currents imposed at open *** experiments show that the tidal current serves as a kind of triggering force for the ISWs over the submarine ridges in the *** the forcing of tidal currents,depressions are formed near the *** ISWs then split from the depressions through a process different from lee-wave generation *** appearance of the ISWs is influenced by the strength and period of the forcing current： the ISWs are more likely to be generated by a stronger tidal *** is why the ISWs in the Luzon Strait are frequently observed during spring *** with diurnal tidal current,the ISWs generated by semidiurnal tidal current with the same amplitude is much more *** is partly because that the wave beams in diurnal frequency have a larger angle with the vertical direction,thus are more likely to be reflected by the topography *** impact of the Kuroshio to the ISWs is also analyzed by adding a vertical uniform or shear current at boundaries.A vertically uniform current may generate ISWs *** the other hand,a vertically shear current,which is more realistic to represent the Kuroshio branch,seems to have little influence on the generation process and radiating direction of the ISWs in the Luzon Strait.

One hundred and seven marine aerosol samples were collected during December 1988 to March 1990, and 3 dry deposition samples, 16 rain samples and 2 Cascade Impacter samples were collected from March to May 1990 at the southeast coast of the Xiamen Island. All the samples were analyzed for SO42-, NO3-, Cl-, Na+ , NH4+, using ion *** results indicate that the concentration of sulfate in marine aerosols over the Xiamen waters appears to be of seasonal variation, in an order of winter > spring > autumn > summer. The mean sulfate concentration lor the total marine aerosol samples over the Xiamen waters is 9. 37 μg/m3, respectively 0. 89 and 8. 48 μg/m3 for the seasalt and non-sea-salt sulfate. The distribution of sulfate shows a bimodal form with a peak in the coarse particle range which is derived from the sea-salt sulfate, and a peak in the fine particle range which is derived from the non-sea-salt sulfate. The total deposition of sulfate to the Xiamen waters is estimated to be 4. 68g/m2 · a, with dry and wet depositions being approximately 2.19 and 2. 49g/m2 · a respectively.

Due to their slow growth rates, seamount Co-rich crusts are very difficult to date with high resolution and precision. This paper is to test the use of orbital pacing on the growth profile of crusts to determine high-resolution age and growth rate. Crust CB14 from the central Pacific Ocean was selected for this study. We first examined the growth pattern in detail under a reflected-light microscope and ascertained that the growth environment was stable for the sub-layer 1 (0-3 mm). We then used electron micro-probe line-scanning to obtain elemental profiles. The pattern of the power spectrum analysis of the Al-profile revealed that there are significant cycles of 113.9, 87.8, 51.5, 42.2 and 25.8 μm. These cycles correspond to the Milankovitch cycles of 53.1, 41, 24, 19.7 and 12 ka, respectively, and yield the growth rate of about 2.14 mm/Ma and an age of about 1.40 Ma for the boundary between the sub-layer 1 and sub-layer 2. We also used a drilling machine with a numerically controlled drive to obtain high-resolution samples at 0.1mm intervals, and used the 230Thex/232Th method to date the samples. For the uppermost 1.3 mm, the growth rate was about 2.15 mm/Ma, and the age for the layer at the depth of 3 mm was about 1.40 Ma, which coincides perfectly with the results obtained from orbital pacing. Thus, it is considered that orbital pacing is a new and effective method to determine the growth rate of the seamount Co-rich crust. This method is applicable for establishing a high-resolution age frame for the crusts of the world's oceans.

Four sources of surface heat flux （SHF） and the satellite remote sensing sea surface temperature （SST） data are combined to investigate the heat budget closure of the Huanghai Sea （HS） in *** is found that heat loss occurs all over the HS during winter and the area averaged heat content change decreases with a rate of-106 W/m *** with the area averaged SHF of-150 W/m 2 from the four SHF data sets,it can be concluded that the SHF plays a dominant role in the HS heat budget during *** contrast,the heat advection transported by the Huanghai Warm Current （Yellow Sea Warm Current,HWC） accounted for up to 29% of the HS heat content *** correlation,especially in February,between the storm events and the SST increase demonstrates that the HWC behaves strongly as a wind-driven compensation current.

Euniphysa, originally a genus of the family Eunicidae, was erected by Wesenberg-Lund in 1949, and for a longtime there has been only one species in this genus. The present report is based on our samples collected from the South china Sea, and we consider that the differences between Euniphysa and Eunice are very significant: Five occipital tentacles distributed unequidistantly; the jaw consists of 6 pairs of maxillary plates; the body may be divided into anterior region and posterior region, etc. Therefore we suggest that Euniphysa should be separated from Eunicidae, and become a new family Euniphysi-dae. At present this family includes 3 genera, namely, Euniphysa , Paraeuniphysa and 1 new genira Heterophysa; Totally there are 7 species, including 3 new species and 1 new combination species.
