In this paper, on the basis of the observational hydrographic data obtained from the eighth cruise of PRC-USA bilateral air-sea interaction program, and combined with the sea surface temperature (SST) charts provided by NOAA, the data obtained from moored thermistor chains supplied by L. J. Mangum and sea level data provided by K. Wyrtki, the ocean conditions since October, 1989 in the western tropical Pacific are exposed, which indicate that 1990 is a year with weak El Nino event similar to the 1980 El Nino event, and the North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC) has made a good contribution to the propagation of warm water from the Western to the Central and Eastern Pacific, a characteristic similar to that of the 1976 El Nino event. The 1990 weak El Nino event will soon fall into decay.

The recorded 15 species of Chaetognatha are studied in the zooplanktonic samples collected in the waters of the western central Pacific (0°～5°N, 160°～165°E) within January and February, and within April and May in 1979. A primary analysis is conducted on the relations of Chaetognatha species composition and numerical distribution with their environmental conditions in the waters by taking into account the field hydrological data.

Dissected tissues of three shellfish species, the Chinese scallop, Chlamys farreri, Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarurn, and Razor shell, Solen strictu were evaluated for in vitro transformation of paralytic shellfish poisoning （PSP） toxins. Tissue homogenates were incubated with extraction from toxic algae Alexandriurn rninutura to determine toxin conversion. The effects of heating and addition of a natural reductant （glutathione） on toxin conversion were also assessed. The toxin profile was investigated through high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection （HPLC-FLD）. The evident variations in the toxin content were observed only in Chinese scallop viscera homogenates. The concentration of GTX4 was reduced by 45% （approximately 0.8 μmol/dm^3） and 25% （approximately 1 μmol/dm^3） for GTX1, while GTX2 and GTX3 increased by six times （approximately 1 μmol/dm^3） and 3 times （approximately 0.3μmol/dm^3） respectively. Simultaneously, the total toxicity decreased by 38% during the 48 h incubation period, the final toxicity was 20.4 nmol STXeq/g. Furthermore, heated Chinese scallop viscera homogenates samples were compared with non-heated samples. The concentration of the GTX4 and GTX1 was clearly 28% （approximately 0.53 μmol/dm^3） and 17% （approximately 0.69μmol/dm^3） higher in heated samples, GTX2 and GTX3 were four times （0.66 μmol/dm^3） and two times （0.187 μmol/dm^3） lower respectively. GSH （＋） Chinese scallop viscera homogenates samples were compared with GSH （-） samples, the concentration in the GTX4 and GTX1 was 9% （approximately 0.12 μmol/dm^3） and 11% （approximately 0.36 μmol/dm^3） lower respectively, GTX2 and GTX3 was 17% （approximately 0.14 μmol/dm^3） and 19% （approximately 0.006 μmol/dm^3） higher respectively. In the sea area west of the middle line of Taiwan Straits, 116°40′～120°30′E, 22°22.9′～25°43′N, four cruises of comprehensive survey were conducted by the Third institute of oceanography, state oceanic administration, from May, 1984 to February, 1985. The data concerned were taken from the quantitative samples obtained by using large-sized standard zooplankton nets, while the values adopted such as hydrological and chemical data of the various stations were from the average values of the field data of each one-meter layer.

Response of the air temperature over the land surface to the global vegetation distribution is investigated, using a three-dimensional governing equation to simulate the steady, large-scale, limited amplitude perturbation of the free, inviscid and adiabatic atmosphere. The adoption of the static equation leads to a temperature governing equation in the terrain following coordinate. With the prescribed temperature as the upper boundary condition and the radiation balance as the lower boundary condition, the semi-analytical solution of the global circulation temperature can be calculated. In this article, only the air temperature (at 2 m height) over the land surface is analyzed, and the result suggests that this model can simulate the air temperature pattern over the land surface reasonably. A better simulation occurs when a simple feedback of the albedo on the temperature is included. Two sensitivity experiments are analyzed through this model. One suggests that the air temperature over the land surface descends obviously when the land surface is covered with ice all over, while another suggests that the air temperature rises a little when the land surface is covered with forest except the ice-covered area. This model appears to be a good tool to study the response of the air temperature to the vegetation distribution. Limitations of the model are also discussed.

Based on regional compensation model and experimental isostasy, the isostatic response function of the Okinawa Trough is calculated by using gravity and topographic data. The results are shown as follows: the effective elastic thickness of the plate and compensation depth in the southern Okinawa Trough is obviously greater than those in the middle Okinawa Trough. In reference with other geological and geophysical data, the differences between the two portions are explained to be caused mainly by their differences in temperature of the lithosphere and the compensation mechanism.

Hydrous titanium oxide (HTO) adsorbents containing the same water content, which were prepared under different temperature cond’tions, were studied by means of valuing uranium-extracting activity, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersing analysis of X-ray (EDAX). The main results obtained are as follows. The content of anatase crystallite varies progressively with the change of preparation temperature. There are intimate relationships among crystallite content, surface appearance and uranium-extracting activity. The uranium-extracting activity will be optimal when the content proportion of crystallite to amorphism is moderate. There are considerable differences in chemical composition between HTO surface phase and bulk phase, between surface matrix and microzone, and between one microzone and another. Calcareous nannoplankton flora in the surface sediments of the East china Sea has been investigated many times based on isolated sample collections since 1980. In the present study, 73 surface sediment samples recovered from the East china Sea, extending from the estuaries to the Okinawa Trough (about 10 -2000 m in depth of water), were chosen to investigate the floral distributional pattern and to discuss in greater detail the controlling factors. Thirty-nine species were identified under polarized microscope and SEM. In general, nannoplankton abundance and diversity increase progressively with the increase of depth. In estuaries and the inner shelf nannoplankton are extremely rare. The 50 m isobath is a sharp boundary for the development of calcareous nannoplankton. Another low floral concentration is encountered at the edge of the outer shelf where Pleistocene relict sediments outcrop. The research of the geophysical survey in the cast of the southern Yellow Sea (SYS) (122°-125°E) in 1999 reveals that the SYS has a structure of three-uplifts and two-basins. The structure can be well concordant with the gravity and magnetic anomalies. In the basins, most of the gravity and magnetic anomalies are low and gentle. As well in the uplifts, the gravity anomalies are high positive ones,but the magnetic anomalies are plus and minus variant *** data show that the mid-uplift is a Cenozoic one. The Paleozoic is under the Q+N strata, the thickness of which is less than 1 km, with no Palaeogene. The Wunansha uplift area and the Sunan uplift area have good continuity, which indicates that they belong to the same geological unit. The basin in the northern part of SYS, which developed in the late Cretaceous period, is a Cenozoic one mainly made up of Cenozoic sediment. On the contrary, the basin in the southern part is the seaward extension of Subei basin and is a medial Cenozoic sediment basin mainly made up of Cenozoic sediment. Because of the striking left-lateral sense translation of Tanlu fault zone, the east plate of fault zone moved northward on a large scale, which generated a massive north-south pull-apart stress field to make the earth crust pulled apart, revolved and tilted, and the pulling-apart basin came into being in the upper part of the crust.
