Emergency membrane contactor based absorption system for ammonia leaks in water treatment plants

Because of the suspected health risks of trihalomethanes (THMs), more and more water treatment plants have replaced traditional chlorine disinfection process with chloramines but often without the proper absorption system installed in the case of ammonia leaks in the storage room. A pilot plant membrane absorption system was developed and installed in a water treatment plant for this purpose. Experimentally determined contact angle, surface tension, and corrosion tests indicated that the sulfuric acid was the proper choice as the absorbent for leaking ammonia using polypropylene hollow fiber membrane contactor. Effects of several operating conditions on the mass transfer coeffcient, ammonia absorption, and removal effciency were examined, including the liquid concentration, liquid velocity, and feed gas concentration. Under the operation conditions investigated, the gas absorption effciency over 99.9% was achieved. This indicated that the designed pilot plant membrane absorption system was effective to absorb the leaking ammonia in the model storage room. The removal rate of the ammonia in the model storage room was also experimentally and theoretically found to be primarily determined by the ammonia suction flow rate from the ammonia storage room to the membrane contactor. The ammonia removal rate of 99.9% was expected to be achieved within 1.3 h at the ammonia gas flow rate of 500 m3/h. The success of the pilot plant membrane absorption system developed in this study illustrated the potential of this technology for ammonia leaks in water treatment plant, also paved the way towards a larger scale application.

This paper extends the conventional concept of radiation stress(Longuet-Higgins and Stewart,1964) in progressive water waves to standing waves,so that its vertical profile could be defined and calculated in a new technical way. The hydrodynamic numerical model being coupled with the vertically varying radiation stress in standing waves is used to simulate the currents being induced by standing waves in the vertical section. Numerical modeling of suspended sediment transport is then carried out to simulate the evolution of the bed composed of fine sediments by the currents. The scour and deposition patterns simulated are in qualitative agreement with prior laboratory and field observations.

Optimization of Additively Decomposed Function with Constraints

We propose a modified evolutionary computation method to solve the optimization problem of additively decomposed function with constraints. It is based on factorized distribution instead of penalty function and any transformation to a linear model or others. The feasibility and convergence of the new algorithm are given. The numerical results show that the new algorithm gives a satisfactory performance.

Nature-friendly river training measures to restore streams to their natural appearance can significantly alter their hydraulic and bed load transport behavior. A systematic theory is however still lacking. By means of laboratory experiments the present paper discussed the initial motion of the bed sand as well as the bed load transport behavior of the rivers with nature-friendly bed works. An experimental formula, based on the dimensional analysis and the regression analysis of the flume data, was presented for the evaluation of bed load transport.

INTERFERENCE OF SIDE STRUT WITH THE NATURAL CAVITATING FLOWS AROUND A SUBMERGED VEHICLE IN WATER TUNNEL EXPERIMENTS

To apply the measurements of model experiment in water tunnel to the actual sailing condition, it is necessary to know accurately the strut effect and its rule. In the present work, the corresponding interferences of one-side strut and two-side strut on the natural cavitating flows around a submerged vehicle in water tunnel were investigated numerically, using the homogeneous equilibrium two-phase model coupled with a natural cavitation model. The numerical simulation results show that the strut types have distinct effects on the hydrodynamic properties. For the same given upstream velocity and downstream pressure, the existence of the strut leads to an increment of natural cavitation number, reduces the low-pressure region and depresses the pressure on the vehicle surface near the sides of strut. In the case of given cavitaiton number, the influences of the two-side strut on the drag and lift coefficients are both enhanced along with the increment of attack angle, however the influence of the one-side strut gradually gets stronger on the drag coefficient but weaker on the lift coefficient contrarily. In addition, based on the present numerical results, a correction method by introducing the sigmoidal logistic function is proposed to eliminate the interference from the foil-shaped strut.

Supramolecular self-assembly and controllable drug release of thermosensitive hyperbranched multiarm copolymers

A novel temperature-responsive hyperbranched multiarm copolymer with a hydrophobic hyperbranched poly(3-ethyl-3-(hydroxymethyl)oxetane)(HBPO) core and thermosensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)(PNIPAM) arms was synthesized via the atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP) of NIPAM monomers from a hyperbranched HBPO *** was found that HBPO-star-PNIPAM self-assembled into multimolecular micelles(around 60 nm) in water at room temperature according to pyrene probe fluorescence spectrometry,1H NMR,TEM,and DLS *** micelle solution showed a reversible thermosensitive phase transition at a lower critical solution temperature(LCST)(around 32°C) observed by variable temperature optical absorbance *** temperature NMR and DLS analyses demonstrated that the LCST transition originated from the secondary aggregation of the micelles driven by increasing hydrophobic interaction due to the dehydration of PNIPAM shells upon *** drug loading and release properties of HBPO-star-PNIPAM micelles were also investigated using prednisone acetate as a model *** micelles showed a much improved drug encapsulation efficiency and temperature-dependent sustainable release behavior due to the special micellar *** micelles exhibited no apparent cytotoxicity against human HeLa cells.

Effect of Curing Regime on Bonding Strength of EVA Modified Mortar to Tile

Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate （EVA） redispersible powder and latex were used to modify mortar. Three kinds of curing regimes： standard curing, high temperature curing and freeze-thaw circle curing were adopted to cure the bonded samples. Bonding strength of EVA modified mortar was tested at 28 days. The development of bonding strengths under all three curing regimes were discussed and compared. The experimental results show that bonding strength increases with the increase of EVA content in mortar. The curing regime used within 28 days is critical according to the bonding strengths values under three curing regimes for different ages. The reasons of that the EVA can improve the bonding strength were analyzed.

Parallel-pipelined Architecture of H.264 Deblocking Filter with Adaptive Dynamic Power

In H.264,the computational complexity and memory access of deblocking filter are variable and depend on the video contents. In this paper,a pipelined VLSI architecture of deblocking filter with adaptive dynamic power is proposed. It avoids redundant computations and memory access by precluding the blocks which can be skipped. And the vertical and horizontal edges are simultaneously processed in an advanced scan order to speed up the decoder. As a result,the dynamic power of the proposed architecture can be reduced (up to about 89%) adaptively for different videos. And the off-chip memory access is improved compared to the previous designs. Moreover,the processing capability of the proposed architecture is very appropriate for real-time deblocking of high-definition television (HDTV,1920× 1080 pixel/frame,30 frame/s video signals) video operation at 38 MHz,which significantly outperforms the previous designs from 1.25 times to 4.8 times.

Tribological Properties of PVA-H Composites Reinforced by Nano-HA Particles

The friction and wear behaviors of tribological mechanical components were studied on a four-ball tester under dry conditions, and the wear mechanism was analyzed by observed worn surface using a scanning electron microscope （SEM）. It was found that the friction and wear properties were improved by the addition ofnano HA particles. The composite containing 1 wt% nano HA had the optimum friction coefficient. It is also found that the addition of nano HA increases the wear resistance of oure PVA-H and PVA-H composites.
