Thermochemical Evaluation of Combustion Synthesis of Al_2O_3/B_4C Composite

The equilibrium phase and adiabatic temperature for combustion synthesis of Al_2O_3/B_4C employing Al, B_2O_3 and C as starting materials is analyzed by both conventional and CALPHAD method. The adiabatic temperature calculed by CALPHAD method is significantly lower than that obtained by conventional method. The CALPHAD calculation also reveals that the equilibrium phases presented at the adiabatic temperature are different to the desired composites. The adiabatic temperature in this system can be lowered by introducing Al_2O_3 as diluents. The maximum amount of Al_2O_3 that can be added to the system while maintain a self-sustaining combusion mode is 1.3 mol.

We have previously shown a critical role of prolactin (PRL) during maturation and anti-tumor effects of murine natural killer (NK) cells in vitro and in vivo. We extended that study by exploring the ability of human NK cell lines (NK-92 and YT cell) to express PRL receptor (PRL-R) and to respond to PRL stimulation in vitro. Both human NK cell lines constitutively expressed PRL-R on membrane and mRNA transcripts, NK-92 cells contained higher level of PRL-R than YT cells, which correlated to the enhanced capacity of the cells to proliferate and to lyse target cells in response to PRL stimulation in the presence of trace amount of IL-2 or IL-1. in vitro. Two differences between IL-2 and IL-1. in functioning on human NK cells were for the first time observed. PRL synergized with IL-1. to improve proliferation of NK cells in a dose-dependent manner without double peak manifesting like IL-2. From Helmholtz equation of the harmonic electromagnetic waves, the integral equations of the light field at the medium boundaries are obtained by use of the Green's theorem and are discretized into linear equation set with the values of the light field and its derivative as the unknowns. On solving the linear equation set, we realize the rigorous computations of the light fields at the boundaries. Then the intensities of the light waves scattered by the random self-affine fractal surfaces in the optical near-field are calculated, and the propagation characteristics, the evolutions of the contrast and the intensity probability density function of the near-field speckles are studied in detail. The near-field speckles are much different from the conventional speckles in the diffraction regions and in the imaging systems. There are obvious local fluctuations in the intensity distributions of the near-field speckles and such fluctuations disappear after propagating a distance of one wavelength from the medium surfaces. For the random surfaces with smaller lateral correlation lengths, the speckle contrasts approach the saturation values and the speckle fields approach Gaussian distribution within the near-field, while for the random surfaces with larger lateral correlation lengths, such evolutions become comparatively slow.

Under the Lipschitz assumption and square integrable assumption on g, the author proves that Jensen＇s inequality holds for backward stochastic differential equations with generator g if and only if g is independent of y, g（t, 0）≡ 0 and g is super homogeneous with respect to z. This result generalizes the known results on Jensen＇s inequality for gexpectation in [4, 7-9].

The surface coating of grinding balls was investigated experimentally. The results show that a coating may form on the surface of grinding balls when Cr or Al powders are subjected to ball grinding. The plastic deformation of the ball surface plays an important role during the coating formation, and the strong binding force between the powders and the balls is a necessary pre-condition. The thickness of coating increases with the plasticity of the powders and the balls. Annealing the balls with coating will result in an obvious diffusion of the elements in the bonding zone of interface.

In this paper a pole assignment problem is considered for the descriptor linear discrete-time periodic systems, which is using the periodic proportional-derivative feedback to modify a given system such that the closed loop system has a specified selfconjugate set of eigenvalues. It is shown that the complete reachability of an open loop periodic system is equivalent to the possibility of assigning an arbitrary set of the eigenvalues to the system by choosing the suitable periodic proportional-derivative feedback.A computational approach is also proposed to solve the problem, which uses the reliable numerical techniques based on the orthogonal transformations. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Characterzation and separation of Al_(1.) species using gel-filtration chromatography

A polyaluminum chloride (PAC) sample was prepared using a slow alkalinetitration method. The Bio-Gel P-1.0 gel column chromatographic technique was used to separate andcharacterize the various forms of aluminum present in the prepared PAC solution. The effluents froma gel column were monitored using online chemical method: AI-Ferron timed complexationspectropho-tometry and by ^(27)Al nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Effects ofdifferent experimental conditions such as eluent flow rate, ionic strength and pH on separation ofAl_(1.) were investigated. Experimental results indicated that molecule size exclusion was not theonly parameter affecting the column chromatographic separation efficiency of Al_(1.) but moleculecharge as well. Reducing the eluent flow rate, increasing the ionic strength and suitable pHresulted in increase in the separation efficiency. Experimental results clearly indicated that byvarying the experimental conditions, it is possible to produce pure Al_(1.) species using a gelcolumn chromatographic technique.

The conception of k_uniform smoothness (KUS) is introduced. It is the extension of the conception of uniform smoothness. It is proved that the k_uniform smoothness and Sullivan’s K_uniform rotundity (KUR) are the daul notions. X+* is a KUR space if and only if X is a KUS space, X+* is a KUS space if and only if X is a KUR space. If X is a KUS space, then X is a (K+1.US space. It is also proved that the KUS space includes the Nan’s k_strongly smooth space.
