Effects of temperature and irradiance on early development of Chondrus ocellatus Holm (Gigartinaceae,Rhodophyta)

Chondrus is a type of commercially produced red seaweed that widely used for food and carrageen extraction. Although the natural life history of the alga had been well understood, the factors influencing development of the tetraspore and carpospore remain poorly understood. In the perspective of seedling resources, the regulation of early development is crucial for the seedlillg nursing; therefore, it is necessary to understand the physiological influences during its early development. In this study, we studied the effects of temperature and irradiance on the early development of Chondrus ocellatus Holm under laboratory conditions. The released tetraspores and carpospores were cultivated at different temperatures （10-28℃） and irradiances （10, 60 μmol photons m^-2s^-1） with a photoperiod of 12L： 12D. The results indicate that both tetraspores and carpospores are tolerant to temperatures of 10-25℃, and have the highest relative growth rate at 20℃. Irradiance variances influenced the growth of the discoid crusts, and the influence was more significant with increasing temperature; 60 μmol photons m^-2s^-1 was more suitable than 10 μmol photons m^-2s^-1. The optimum temperature and irradiance for the development of seedlings was 20℃ and 60 μmol photons m^-2s^-1, respectively.

Two-dimensional viscous flow in a straight channel was studied. The steadyNavier-Stokes equations were linearized on the assumption of small disurbance from theCouette-Poiseuille flow, leading to an eigenvalue equation resembling the Orr-Sommerfeld *** eigenvalues determine the rate of decay for the stationary perturbation. Asymptotic forms of thedownstream eigenvalues were derived in the limiting cases of small and large Reynolds number, forthe flow with a general mass flux per unit width, and thus the work of Wilson (1969) and Stocker andDuck (1995) was generalized. The asymptotic results are in agreement with numerical ones presentedby Song and Chen (1995).

Ocean current data for nearly 3 months in the South china Sea (SCS), combined with the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis wind data, are analyzed. The results indicate that the wind en-ergy enters the upper mixed layer in a wide continuous frequency band. In addition, the interac-tion between the low-frequency wind anomaly and the low-frequency current anomaly is the most ‘effective’ way for the energy input from the wind to the upper ocean. However, only the inertial and the near inertial energy propagate downwards through the upper mixed layer. The down-ward-propagating energy is distributed into the barotropic currents, the baroclinic currents and each mode of the baroclinic currents following the normal distributions. The energy change ratios between the barotropic motion to the baroclinic motion induced by the wind present a normal distribution of N (0.0242, 0.3947). The energy change ratios of the first 4 baroclinic modes to the whole baroclinic currents also follow the normal distributions. The first baroclinic mode follows N (0.2628, 0.1872), the second N (0.1979, 0.1504), the third N (0.1331, 0.1633), and the fourth N (0.0650, 0.1540), respectively.

Zenisu deep-sea channel originated from a volcanic arc region, Izu-Ogasawara Island Arc, and vanished in the Shikoku Basin of the Philippine Sea. According to the swath bathymetry, the deep-sea channel can be divided into three segments. They are Zenisu canyon, E-W fan channel and trough-axis channel. A lot of volcanic detritus were deposited in the Zenisu Trough via the deep-sea channel because it originated from volcanic arc settings. On the basis of the swath bathymetry, submersible and seismic reflection data, the deposits are characterized by turbidite and debrite deposits as those in the other major deep-sea channels. Erosion or few sediments were observed in the Zenisu canyon,whereas a lot of turbidites and debrites occurred in the E-W channel and trough axis channel. Cold seep communities,active fault and fluid flow were discovered along the lower slope of the Zenisu Ridge. Vertical sedimentary sequences in the Zenisu Trough consist of the four post-rift sequence units of the Shikoku Basin, among which Units A and B are two turbidite units. The development of Zenisu canyon is controlled by the N-S shear fault, the E-W fan channel is related to the E-W shear fault, and the trough-axis channel is related to the subsidence of central basin.

This paper presents the notions of exact observability and exact detectability for Markov jump linear stochastic systems of Ito type with multiplieative noise （for short, MJLSS）. Stochastic Popov-Belevith-Hautus （PBH） Criterions for exact observability and exact detectability are respectively obtained. As an application, stochastic H2/H∞ control for such MJLSS is discussed under exact detectability.

A study of internal solitary waves observed on the continental shelf in the northwestern South china Sea

Based on in-situ time series data from the acoustic Doppler current profiler （ADCP） and thermistor chain in Wenchang area, a sequence of internal solitary wave （ISW） packets was observed in September 2005, propagating northwest on the continental shelf of the northwestern South china Sea （SCS）. Corresponding to different stratification of the water column and tidal condition, both elevation and depression ISWs were observed at the same mooring location with amplitude of 35 m and 25 m respectively in different days. Regular arrival of the remarkable ISW packets at approximately the diurnal tidal period and the dominance of diurnal internal waves in the study area, strongly suggest that the main energy source of the waves is the diurnal tide. Notice that the wave packets were all riding on the troughs and shoulders of the internal tides, they were probably generated locally from the shelf break by the evolution of the internal tides due to nonlinear and dispersive effects.

The coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation models (CGCM) are nowbecoming the indispensable tools for the climate study. However, most models still suffer fromunrealistic simulations. One problem is the troublesome climate drift. It may come from someunresolved aspects. One possibility is the poor air-sea surface flux description now adopted inCGCM. The commonly used solution for this problem is the so-called flux correction. To deal with it,Hasslemann proposed an alternative solution of prospect. That is to incorporate the ocean surfacewave model into this coupled GCM system so as to establish a coupled atmosphere-wave-ocean *** necessity is clearly seen from the recent field experiment that air-sea momentum flux dependsstrongly on the sea state. So the explicit calculation of the air-sea flux with the aid of the oceansurface wave model is highly desired. Theoretical progress has provided feasibility to such ideaand experiments have been conducted. Recent work also reveals that coupling ocean surface wave modelwith oceanic general circulation model can result in much better reproduction of the upper oceanthermal structure. This further strengthens our belief in the final realization of the coupledatmosphere-wave-ocean modeling system.

Using GPS data obtained from GPS sites located on the sunlit hemisphere during the flare on July 14, 2000, the ionospheric response to the flare was analyzed. A kind of tiny correlative ionospheric fluctuations were revealed from the temporal total electron content (TEC) curves derived from GPS measurements, and the values of this kind of disturbances are about 1015 m-2. A comparative analysis of these disturbances and soft X-ray flux detected at GOES satellite during the flare is done. It is found that this kind of disturbances revealed in the temporal TEC curves did occur in a very large area of sunlit ionosphere and its behavior is mainly controlled by the characteristics of the flare’s extra radiation. Because the similar fluctuations are not found in the curve of soft X-ray flux, it is concluded that the flare extra radiation in EUV band should have corresponding fluctuations and it is the fluctuations that cause the TEC disturbances.
