Use of the advanced microwave sounding unit data to improve typhoon prediction

The effects of incorporating the advanced microwave sounding unit (AMSU-A) data with a modified zhu-Zhang-Weng vortex- bogussing algorithm on typhoon prediction are examined through the use of the PSU/NCAR Mesoscale Model version 5 (MM5). The AMSU-A data contain the vertical distribution of the retrieved temperature from satellite brightness temperature, with the geopo- tential height and wind fields derived through a series of statistical and diagnostic calculations. The advantages of the modified vortex- bogussing algorithm include the incorporation of realistic asymmetric typhoon structures, the balanced dynamics with the background field, the easiness to implement and the effcient computations. To test the effciency of this vortex-bogussing algorithm, the Typhoon Dan event in 1999 is simulated by incorporating the derived AMSU-A fields into the initial conditions of the MM5 modeling system. Results show significant improvements in the track and intensity of the storm, as compared to the simulation without the AMSU-A data. Therefore, this modified vortex-bogussing algorithm can be easily implemented on any typhoon modeling system, which will improve the real-time forecast of tropical cyclones.

The Middle Pliocene (ca 3.12.2.97 Ma) is a recent warm period in the Earth’s history. In many respects, the warmth of the Middle Pliocene is similar to the probable warm situation of the late 21st century predicted by climate models. Understanding the Middle Pliocene climate is important in predicting the future climate with global warming. Here, we used the latest reconstructions for the Middle Pliocene—Pliocene research Interpretation and Synoptic Mapping (PRISM) version 3.to simulate the Middle Pliocene climate with a fully coupled model Fast Ocean Atmosphere Model. From comparison of the results of simulations with reconstructions, we considered two important scientific topics of Middle Pliocene climate modeling: extreme warming in the subpolar North Atlantic and a permanent El Ni?o in the tropical Pacific. Our simulations illustrate that the global annual mean sea surface temperature (SST) in the Middle Pliocene was about 2.3.C higher than that in the pre-industrial era. The warming was stronger at midand high latitudes than at low latitudes. The simulated SST changes agree with SST reconstructions in PRISM3.data, especially for the North Atlantic, North Pacific and west coast of South America. However, there were still discrepancies between the simulation of the SST and reconstructions for the subpolar North Atlantic and tropical Pacific. In the case of the Atlantic, the weakened meridional overturning circulation in the simulation did not support the reconstruction of the extremely warm condition in the subpolar North Atlantic. In the case of the tropical Pacific, the whole ocean warmed, especially the eastern tropical Pacific, which did not support the permanent El Ni?o suggested by the reconstruction. From evaluation of the modeling and reconstruction, we suggest that the above discrepancies were due to uncertainties in reconstructions, difficulties in paleoclimate modeling and deficiencies of climate models. In this paper,the product designs,mechanical properties and microstructure of ultra-high strength linepipe steel in grade X12. strip with a thickness of 16mm have been shown and analyzed *** tensile test results with different directions,including transverse,longitudinal and 3.° to the rolling direction,showed that the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength reach and exceed 900MPa and 1000MPa respectively,which are far higher than requirements of X12.,such as 827MPa and *** the other hand,as shown from the test results of Charpy impact tests at different temperatures from 20 ℃ to-60 ℃,the absorbed energies and fracture shear area at-60℃ are about 200J and 100% respectively,which is very exciting and *** order to clarify the strengthening mechanism and effect of X12. strip further,microstructure has been observed through *** of the metallography revealedthat the microstructure was composed of lower bainitewith a size of 1um and fine M/A *** X12. strip was formed into 1420 mm diameter spiral welded pipe in Huabei pipe *** results showed that ultra-high strength and high toughness linepipe could be achieved through reasonable alloy composition design and optimized rolling processes.

A brief review on the recent development of phonon engineering and manipulation at nanoscales

Phonons are the quantum mechanical descriptions of vibrational modes that manifest themselves in many physical properties of condensed matter systems. As the size of electronic devices continues to decrease below mean free paths of acoustic phonons, the engineering of phonon spectra at the nanoscale becomes an important topic. Phonon manipulation allows for active control and management of heat fow, enabling functions such as regulated heat transport. At the same time, phonon transmission, as a novel signal transmission method, holds great potential to revolutionize modern industry like microelectronics technology, and boasts wide-ranging applications. Unlike fermions such as electrons, polarity regulation is difficult to act on phonons as bosons, making the development of effective phonon modulation methods a daunting *** work reviews the development of phonon engineering and strategies of phonon manipulation at different scales, reports the latest research progress of nanophononic devices such as thermal rectifiers, thermal transistors, thermal memories, and thermoelectric devices,and analyzes the phonon transport mechanisms involved. Lastly, we survey feasible perspectives and research directions of phonon engineering. Thermoelectric analogies, external field regulation, and acousto-optic co-optimization are expected to become future research hotspots.

Covarying modes of the Pacific SST and northern hemispheric midlatitude atmospheric circulation anomalies during winter

The interannual-to-interdecadal relationship between the Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) and the northern hemispheric midlati- tude’s atmosphere represented by the circumpolar vortex was documented with the global oceanic and atmospheric reanalysis data of recent 50 *** covarying modes of the Pacific SST and northern circumpolar vortex anomalies during winter were examined using the sin- gular value decomposition and wavelet analysis *** is the interannual,ENSO-related mode and the other is the interdecadal, North Pacific SST-related mode with a period of around 20 *** two modes exhibit distinct spatial *** the interannual mode,the SST anomaly is characterized by a typical ENSO pattern with the principal signature in the tropical eastern Pacific and secondary one in the central North Pacific,while the atmospheric anomaly is regional,characterized by a Pacific-North American *** the inter- decadal mode,large SST anomaly is located in the central North Pacific,while the atmospheric anomaly is zonally global,associated with the midlatitute’s standing long-wave *** the central North Pacific is colder,the long-wave is stronger,and vice *** investigations suggest that the interdecadal mode could involve an interaction between "two oceans and an atmosphere".

Distribution characteristics of seamount cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts and the determination of the size of areas for exploration and exploitation

In 2001, the international Seabed Authority （ISBA） initiated the consideration relating to the Regulations for Prospecting and Exploration for Hydrothermal Polymetallic Sulphides and Cobalt-rich Ferromanganese Crusts in the Area at its 7th session. Since then, the consideration of the Regulations has been mainly focused on the size of areas to be allocated for exploration and exploitation of the crusts. This paper, based on the investigation data and the analysis of the distribution characteristics of the crusts, suggests a model for determining the size of areas for exploration and exploitation of the crusts, taking into account various factors such as production scale, crust thickness and grade, mineable area proportion, recovery efficiency, exploration venture, and so on. Through the modeling, the paper suggests that the exploration area （the area covered by each application for approval of a plan of work for exploration of cobalt-rich crusts） shall be 4 856 km2 and the exploitation area （the mine site area） shall be 1 214 km2, for 20 years of 1 million wet tonnes annual production.

[1]The relationship between the summer(July-September) North Atlantic Oscillation (SNAO) and simultaneous East Asian air temperature is *** results show that the SNAO is related to middle East Asian summer air temperature,however this linkage varies with time on decadal timescale:a strong connection appears after the late 1970s but a weak connection before the late *** analysis indicates that this instable relationship may have resulted from the shift of the SNAO mode around the late *** the period of 1979-2003.the centers of the SNAO mode are located more eastward.A positive-phase(negative-phase) SNAO produces a strong lower-level divergence(convergence) over the Asian jet entrance region,in turn stimulates a strong upper-level convergence(divergence) via the Ekman *** a convergence (divergence) then excites a zonally oriented quasi-stationary barotropical Rossby wave train along the Asian upper-level *** the SNAO signal is transported eastward to East Asia,resulting in an anomalous summer air temperature over middle East Asia. However,in the period of 1951-1975,the centers of the SNAO mode are located more *** associated upper-level divergence/convergence is away from the Asian jet entrance region,and the SNAO signal cannot be transported eastward to East *** the connection is broken.

The Production and Release of CFCs from Coal Combustion

The destruction of the ozone layer in the atmosphere caused by industriallysynthesized CFCs has aroused greatest concerns from the international society, but the CFCs formedfrom burning of coal containing fluorine have not been recognized by the world yet. In the presentstudy, we condensed the gas through cold traps and used the GC-MS to measure the gas composition,and found that the content of CFC-12.in the smog from coal combustion was significantly higher thanthe background value of the local atmosphere. This proves that CFC- 12.is formed in the process ofcoal combustion. This paper discusses a new source of non-synthesized CFCs.

This paper presents an improved group search optimizer(iGSO) for solving mechanical design optimization *** the proposed algorithm,subpopulations and a co-operation evolutionary strategy were adopted to improve the global search capability and convergence *** iGSO is evaluated on two optimization problems of classical mechanical design:spring and pressure *** experimental results are analyzed in comparison with those reported in the *** results show that iGSO has much better convergence performance and is easier to implement in comparison with other existing evolutionary algorithms.

Much geological research has illustrated the transition of paleoenvironmental patterns during the Cenozoic from a planetary-wind-dominant type to a monsoon-dominant type, indicating the initiation of the East Asian monsoon and inland-type ***,there is a dispute about the causes and mechanisms of the transition,especially about the impact of the Himalayan/Tibetan Plateau uplift and the Paratethys Sea *** numerical sensitivity experiments under dirent land-sea distributions and Himalayan/Tibetan Plateau topography conditions are performed here to simulate the evolution of climate belts with emphasis on changes in the rain band,and these are compared with the changes in the paleoenvironmental patterns during the Cenozoic recovered by geological *** consistency between simulations and the geological evidence indicates that both the Tibetan Plateau uplift and the Paratethys Sea retreat play important roles in the formation of the monsoon-dominant environmental pattern. Furthermore,the simulations show the monsoon-dominant environmental pattern comes into being when the Himalayan/Tibetan Plateau reaches 1000-2000 m high and the Paratethys Sea retreats to the Turan Plate.
