BACKGROUND: Anomalous pancreaticobiliary junction is often associated with biliary tract carcinoma and acute pan- creatitis. We assessed the value of image analysis in the diag- nosis of patients with anomalous pancreaticobiliary junction (APBJ) and the principles for the treatment of APBJ. METHODS: Sixty-four patients with APBJ were subjected to ultrasound imaging, endoscopic retrograde cholangio- pancreatography (ERCP) and magnetic resonance cholan- giopancreatography (MRCP) before surgery. The diagnos- tic accuracy of image analysis and their surgical outcomes were evaluated retrospectively. RESULTS: On ERCP and MRCP, the length of the com- mon channel was calculated to be 15 mm or longer in all patients, and the angle of the junction was more than 75° in 49 (76.6%) of the 64 patients. Of the 64 patients, 28 were defined of pancreatic duct type (P-C) (28/64, 43.75%), 32 bile duct type (C-P) (32/64, 50%), and 4 common chan- nel type (4/64, 6.25%). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with APBJ are often associated with biliary tract and pancreatic diseases, and early detec- tion and correct surgical treatment could avoid serious complications. ERCP and MRCP are accurate in the diag- nosis of APBJ.

A Bacillus subtilis strain JA-1 isolated from an oil reservoir was studied. This strain is capable of growth and producing biosurfactant at a temperature of 60 ℃. In nutrient medium it produced biosurfactant which reduced the surface tension from 68.2 mN/m to 28.3 mN/m, with the critical micelle concentration （CMC） of 48 mg/L. The measured surface tension indicated that the biosurfactant possessed stable surface activity at high temperature and a specific range of pH and salt concentrations. The results of thin layer chromatography （TLC） together with FT-IR showed that the metabolic product of strain JA-1 is a lipopeptide biosurfactant. The ability to growth at high temperature and to produce biosurfactant makes strain JA-1 promising for enhanced oil recovery.

Based on the method of determining interval entropy weight,the optimization model which can reflect the measure of decision maker’s optimism and make full advantage of existing objective information is *** a new method of decision in interval entropy weight is given on the basis of the subjective preference of decision-maker and objective ***,the example of risk decision for the development of the aerospace project is presented to show the feasibility and effectiveness of this method.

OBJECTIVE: To review the current state of research in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). DATA RESOURCES: Searching Medline (1994-2002) and Chinese Medical Journals Index (1998- 2002) for articles on NAFLD. RESULTS: NAFLD is a new and challenging field with increasing recognition although its pathogenesis is poorly understood. 'Two hits' hypothesis is still the leading theory guiding current research. CONCLUSIONS: Genetic study is a promising way that might lead to breakthrough in NAFLD research. NAFLD study in china is at an initial stage and there is a long way to go.

Objective To assess the utility of low- and high-frequency tympanometry in the diagnosis of middle ear dysfunction in Chinese infants. Methods Tympanograms were obtained with 226 Hz, 678 Hz and 1000 Hz probe tones from infants aged 5-25 weeks with normal auditory brainstem responses(ABRs)(15 infants, 30 ears) and with prolonged wave I latencies(17 infants, 20 ears), suggesting middle ear dysfunction, using a GSI Tympstar middle ear analyzer Version II. Results The single-peaked tympanogram was the most characteristic type in both groups and seen in 25 ears (83.3%) in the normal ABR group and in 18 ears (90%) in the delayed wave I group, respectively. The peak pressure, peak compensated static acoustic admittance and gradient of 226 Hz tympanometry were of no significant differences between the two groups. The 678 Hz tympanograms of admittance, susceptance and conductance demonstrated non-peak, single-, double- and tri-peaked patterns in both groups. The agreement between ABRs and 678 Hz tympanograms of admittance,susceptance and conductance were 70.0%, 58.0% and 64.0%(kappa=0.324, 0.234 and 0.118) respectively. For 1000 Hz probe tone, admittance, susceptance and conductance tympanograms showed single peaked patterns in 28(93.3%), 25 (83.3%) and 26(86.7%) of the 30 normal ears. Admittance, susceptance and conductance tympanograms using the 1000 Hz probe tone were flat in 15 (75%), 17(85%) and 13 (65%) of the ears in infants with prolonged wave I latencies. For 1000 Hz admittance, susceptance and conductance Tympanograms, the agreement between tympanometry and ABR results were 90.0%, 92.0% and 86.0% with kappa at 0.783, 0.831 and 0.690, respectively. Conclusion 1000 Hz probe tone tympanometry is a promising middle ear function test for infants of 1-6 months age, while 226 Hz and 678 Hz probe tones are less efficient in detecting middle ear dysfunction in infants.

Strong deformed sediments investigated in the Hoh Xil basin may contain detailed records for early Tertiary crustal shortening in northern Tibet (Fig.1A). Sedimentary sequences in the basin consist of the Fenghuoshan Group, the Yaxicuo Group, and the early Miocene Wudaoliang Group from lower to upper. Magnetostratigraphic research has indicated the Eocene to early Oligocene ages for the Fenghuoshan and Yaxicuo Groups (Liu, et al., 2000). Total 29 lithological sections with 20487 7m thick were measured spread all over the 101000km\+2 Hoh Xil basin, the largest Tertiary sedimentary basin in the hinterland of the Tibetan plateau, to reveal the prototype basin and its evolution processes. They include 17 sections with 14925 3m thick of the Fenghuoshan Group, 8 sections with 4273 5m thick of the Yaxicuo Group, and 4 sections with 1284 9m thick of the Wudaoliang Group.

Abnormal events in earth science have great influence on both the natural envi-ronment and the human society. Finding association patterns among these events has great significance. Because data in earth science has characteristics of mass,high dimension,spatial autocorrelation and time delay,existing mining technolo-gies cannot be directly used on it. We propose a RSNN (range-based searching nearest neighbors) spatial clustering algorithm to reduce the data size and auto-correlation. Based on the clustered data,we propose a GEAM (geographic episode association pattern mining) algorithm which can deal with events time lags and find interesting patterns with specific constraints,to mine the association patterns. We carried out experiments on global climate datasets and found many interesting association patterns. Some of the patterns are coincident with known knowledge in climate science,which indicates the correctness and feasibilities of our methods,and the others are unknown to us before,which will give new information to this research field.
