This study was performed to build region-specific reference ranges of peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets for Chinese healthy adults from the young to the elderly and analyze the trends of changes in lymphocyte subsets for evaluating the impact of age on the values.151 healthy adults aged 19-86 were recruited based on the SENIEUR *** sets of reference ranges were finally built applicable for the healthy young(19-44 years),middle-aged(45-64 years) and elder adults(≥65).Comparisons in parameters among the three cohorts showed that a statistically significant increase in CD16CD56+ NK cell was observed between the middle-aged and elder cohorts,whereas for the majority of the parameters,a significant decline was observed between the young and the middle-aged *** results showed that inverse correlations were observed between the age and CD19+ B,CD3+ T,CD3+CD4+ T,CD4+CD45RA+CD62L+ nave T cell and CD4+CD28+/CD4+,while the positive one was identified between the age and the NK *** significant changes of the most of immune parameters provided evidence for ***,T cell activation markers of CD8+CD38+ and CD8+HLA-DR+ showed reverse trends of association with age,which provides a clue for further researches on the mechanisms underlying the paradoxical clinical presentation of the elder patients.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer remains a devastating disease with a 5-year survival rate of less than 5%. Recent advances in diagnostic methods and therapeutic approaches have increased the possibility of improving the existing poor prognosis. DATA SOURCES: English-language articles reporting early diagnosis and therapy of pancreatic cancer were searched from the MEDLINE and PubMed databases, Chinese-language articles were from CHKD (china hospital Knowledge Database) RESULT: The current literature about pancreatic cancer was reviewed from three aspects: statistics, screening and early detection, and therapy. CONCLUSIONS: Early detection and screening of pancreatic cancer currently should be limited to high risk patients Surgical resection is the only curative approach available, with some recent improvement in outcomes. Gemcitabine has been a standard treatment during the last decade. Gemcitabine based combination treatment, especially combined with newer molecular targeted agents, is promising. The rationale for radiotherapy is controversial, but with the recent development of modern radiation delivery techniques, radiotherapy should be intensified. Patients with borderline pancreatic cancer could benefit from neoadjuvant therapy but more evidence is needed and the best neoadjuvant regimen is still to be determined.

Surgical Management of Macular Epiretinal Membranes

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of surgical treatment on macular epiretinal ***: Vitrectomy and membrane removal were undergone for idopathic or secondary macular epiretinal ***: Fourteen eyes of 15 patients (93%) had vision improvement after operation in which 8 eyes (57%) increased 3 or more Senellen lines. Only one case suffered from paracentral scotoma. No other complications were noted. Conclusion: Surgical management of macular epiretinal membrane is safe and effective with good visual outcome and few complications. Eye Science 1996; 12:140 -144.

HXB2 is primarily used as a template strain in developing HIV vaccines in Europe and the US. However,it is not yet known whether the strain can induce strong HIV-specific CD8+ T cell responses in Chinese HIV/AIDS patients. In the present study,two groups of subjects were investigated:9 AIDS patients and 7 long-term nonprogressors (LTNPs). HIV-specific CD8+ T cell responses were examined in all patients through the ELISPOT assay. CD4+ T cell counts,CD8+ T cell counts,viral load and HIV subtype of each patient were also measured. Thailand B virus strain was identified among all the patients. The breadth and magnitude of HIV-specific CD8+ T cell responses in the LTNPs group are greater than those in the AIDS group (P2 Gag and Nef peptide pools are considerable in Chinese HIV/AIDS patients infected with Thailand B virus strain. HIV-1 vaccines based on HXB2 strain that can induce extensive immunity may be helpful for Chinese.

BACKGROUND: MiR-210 is induced by hypoxia and plays different roles in the development of certain cancers. However, little is known about its role in pancreatic cancer (PC). This study aimed to explore the induction and modulation of PC by miR-210 and its potential molecular targets. METHODS: PC cells were cultured under normoxic and hypoxic conditions. Expression of miR-210 and hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α was detected using quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. Cancer cells were transiently transfected with HIF-1α small interfering RNA (siRNA) and miR-210 mimics, and cell proliferation was measured using the CCK-8 assay. Potential targets for miR-210 were then identified using a dual luciferase reporter assay. RESULTS: Hypoxic conditions induced miR-210 expression in six PC cell lines (AsPC-1, BxPC-3, MIAPaCa-2, PANC-1, Su86.86 and SW1990), but not in Capan-1 or T3M4 cells. Transfection of HIF-1α siRNA into PANC-1 cells markedly inhibited HIF-1α expression, and subsequently down- regulated miR-210 expression under hypoxic conditions. MiR-210 had no observable impact on the proliferation of PANC-1 or Su86.86 cells and dual luciferase reporter assays showed significantly reduced luciferase activity in the wild- type E2F3, EFNA3, GIT2, MNT, ZNF462 and EGR3 constructs, compared to the corresponding mutants, but not in HOXA3. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that miR-210 expression in PC cells is induced by hypoxia through a HIF-1α-dependent pathway, but does not influence PC cell proliferation. Also, E2F3, EFNA3, GIT2, MNT, ZNF462 and EGR3 may be potential miR-210 targets in PC.

Immunobiological study is a key to revealing the important basis of facial nerve repair and regeneration for both research and development of clinic treatments. The microenvironmental changes around an injuried facial motoneuron, i.e., the aggregation and expression of various types of immune cells and molecules in a dynamic equilibrium, impenetrate from the start to the end of the repair of an injured facial nerve. The concept of 'immune microenvironment for facial nerve repair and regeneration', mainly concerns with the dynamic exchange between expression and regulation networks and a variaty of immune cells and immune molecules in the process of facial nerve repair and regeneration for the maintenance of a immune microenvironment favorable for nerve repair. Investigation on microglial activation and recruitment, T cell behavior, cytokine networks, and immunological cellular and molecular signaling pathways in facial nerve repair and regeneration are the current hot spots in the research on immunobiology of facial nerve injury. The current paper provides a comprehensive review of the above mentioned issues. Research of these issues will eventually make immunological interventions practicable treatments for facial nerve injury in the clinic.
