Interannual variation of annual precipitation and urban effect on precipitation in the beijing region

The large scale character of the interannual variation of precipitation and the urban effect on local annual precipitation anomaly are investigated in this paper based on the 1960-2000 annual precipitation observations at 20 stations in the beijing *** results show that:the annual precipitation in the beijing region possesses the large scale variation character with the linear trend of-1.197/10 yr,which corresponds to a total reduction of 27.82 mm in annual precipitation in the 41 years;the local annual precipitation anomalies(percent of the normal 1960-2000)show a positive center near the urban area,*** precipitation island(UPI),whose intensity increases with the linear trend of 0.6621%/10 yr,opposite to the interannual trend of large scale precipitation over the beijing region;changes in the UPI are also associated with the intensity of synoptic processes of precipitation,and when the synoptic processes are strong(wet years),the intensity of UPI strengthens,while the synoptic processes are weak(dry years),and the UPI disappears in the beijing region.

An investigation was carried out by numerical simulation on a wind turbine airfoil and a blunt trailing-edge airfoil with and without vortex generators (VGs), and the performance of the airfoils was analyzed. By the simulation of airfoil DU 91-W2-250 it was verified that the numerical method and model were credible. Based on this airfoil, a new one with a blunt trailing edge of 6% chord was blended by symmetrically adding thickness, and its characteristics curves were obtained through computing at key angles of attack. Additionally, the pressure distribution on blended airfoil was analyzed by comparing to the airfoil without blend. The interaction of streamwise vortices induced by VGs with trailing vortex or separation vortex was considered, followed by the uncovery of how VGs can suppress the boundary layer separation.

A high-resolution electron microscopy study has uncovered the plastic behavior of accommodating large strains in nanocrystalline (NC) Ni subject to cold rolling at liquid nitrogen temperature. The activation of grain-boundary-mediated-plasticity is evidenced in NC-Ni, including twinning and formation of stacking fault via partial dislocation slips from the grain boundary. The formation and storage of 60? full dislocations are observed inside NC-grains. The grain/twin boundaries act as the barriers of dislocation slips, leading to dislocation pile-up, severe lattice distortion, and formation of sub-grain boundary. The vicinity of grain/twin boundary is where defects preferentially accumulate and likely the favorable place for onset of plastic deformation. The present results indicate the heterogeneous and multiple natures of accommodating plastic strains in NC-grains.

We present the solar-terrestrial transit process of three successive coronal mass ejections (CMEs) of November 4―5, 1998 originating from active region 83.5 by using a time-dependent three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simula-tion. These CMEs interacted with each other while they were propagating in inter-planetary space and finally formed a "complex ejecta". A newly developed SIP-CESE MHD model was applied to solve MHD equations numerically. The quiet solar wind was started from Parker-like 1D solar wind solution and the magnetic field map was calculated from the solar photospheric magnetic field data. In our simulation, the ejections were initiated using pulse in the real active region 83.5. The interplanetary disturbance parameters, such as speed, direction and angular size of the expanding CME, were determined from the SOHO/LASCO data with the cone-model. We discussed the three-dimensional aspects of the propagation, in-teraction and merging of the three ejections. The simulated interplanetary shocks were compared with the nearby-Earth measurement. The results showed that our simulation could reproduce and explain some of the general features observed by satellite for the "complex ejecta".

A grid-by-grid counting of interdecadal trend turning(ITT)of annual mean surface air temperature(SAT)and total precipitation at 67,3.9 terrestrial grids in the period 1951-2002 is *** analysis of the last ITTs of SAT and total precipitation in the period,in the context of both occurrence time and linear trends after the breakpoint,indicates that a warming trend has become highly significant across most reagent of the world in the late 20th *** terrestrial grids have recorded an ITT of total precipitation in either the 1970s or 1980s,and 45.7% of the terrestrial grids in the study have seen a decreasing trend in total annual precipitation after the break- point,with the remaining 54.3. having experienced an increasing ***,global terrestrial regions have experienced either an increasingly warm and dry climate or an increasingly warm and wet *** analysis of ITT of regional mean SAT and total pre- cipitation in 22 regions shows that the Northern American continent has become increasingly warm and dry after the last interdecadal ***,the African continent has become increasingly warm and wet,with both Europe and most of Asia having the same *** South America and the West of Australia have experienced an opposite trend in climate,becoming increasingly cold and wet.

Mitochondria experience continuous fusion and fission in a living cell, but their dynamics remains poorly quantified. Here a theoretical model was developed, upon a simplified population balance equation (PBE), to predict the morphological changes induced by mitochondrial fission and fusion. Assuming that both fission and fusion events are statistically independent, the survival probability of mitochondria staying in the fission or fusion state was formulated as an exponentially-decayed function with time, which depended on the time-dependent distribution of the mitochondrial volume and the fission and fusion rates. Parametric analysis was done for two typical volume distributions. One was Gamma distribution and the other was Gaussian distribution, derived from the measurements of volume distribution for individual mitochondria in a living cell and purified mitochondria in vitro. The predictions indicated that the survival probability strongly depended on morphological changes of individual mitochondria and was inversely correlated to the fission and fusion rates. This work provided a new insight into quantifying the mitochondrial dynamics via monitoring the evolution of the mitochondrial volume.

The classical least-square method was extended from the real number into the complex number domain, which is called the complex least-square method. The mathematical derivation and its applications show that the complex least-square method is different from one that the real number and the imaginary number are separately calculated with the classical least-square, by which the actual least-square estimation cannot be obtained in practice. Applications of this new method to an arbitrarily given series and to the precipitation in rainy season at 160 meteorological stations in china mainland show advantages of this method over other conventional statistical models.

A direct numerical simulation of the shock/turbulent boundary layer interaction flow in a supersonic 24-degree compression ramp is conducted with the free stream Mach number *** blow-and-suction disturbance in the upstream wall boundary is used to trigger the *** the mean wall pressure and the velocity profiles agree with those of the experimental data,which validates the *** turbulent kinetic energy budget in the separation region is *** show that the turbulent production term increases fast in the separation region,while the turbulent dissipation term reaches its peak in the near-wall *** turbulent transport term contributes to the balance of the turbulent conduction and turbulent *** on the analysis of instantaneous pressure in the downstream region of the mean shock and that in the separation bubble,the authors suggest that the low frequency oscillation of the shock is not caused by the upstream turbulent disturbance,but rather the instability of separation bubble.
