Enrichment mechanisms of rare earth elements in marine hydrogenic ferromanganese crusts

A series of selective extraction experiments were conducted on marine hydrogenic ferromanganese crusts from the seamount near the Line Island to investigate the distribution of rare earth elements （REEs） and the mechanisms of combination between REEs and the hydrogenic ferromanganese crusts. The enrichment of REEs in hydrogenic ferromanganese crusts is attributed mainly to the mineral or oxide/hydroxide of the crust rather than the growth environment. The REEs are present mainly in amorphous ferric oxide/hydroxide rather than in 6-MnO2. Amorphous ferric oxide/hydroxide preferentially combines free REE3＋, while 6-MnO2.combines the REE-carbonate complexes in modern seawater. The REEs in seawater are combined more strongly with amorphous ferric oxide/hydroxides than with 6-MnO2. The positive Ce anomaly in hydrogenic ferromanganese crusts results from the oxidation of soluble Ce3＋ to insoluble Ce4＋ by the actively soluble oxygen of the bottom current rather than by the oxidation of δ-MnO2.

Morphology and internal architecture of a banner bank off Chengshan Headland, Shandong Peninsula

A banner bank off the north coast of the Chengshan Headland, Shandong Peninsula, has been described on the basis of echo sounder bathymetry, side-scan sonar and high-resolution seismic data sets. The bank is in NWW direction, approximately parallel to the coastline. The bank consists of sandy silt or clayed silt. Sand waves and megaripples are observed on the north side, which result from strong tidal currents around the headland and storm waves in winter. These bed forms indicate that the bank is influenced by the modern hydrodynamics. The bank is separated from the coast and Holocene subaqueous clinoform around the Shandong Peninsula in its east part. High-resolution seismic profiles reveal that the bank was formed during two periods： the earlier seismic unit Ua, and later seismic units Ub and Uc which overlays Ua with erosional surfaces on its south side and north side, respectively. As comparing with the clinoform, the bank has a different internal architecture. In the west of the bank, however, topography and surface sediment characteristics suggest that the bank links to the clinoform. The authors propose that seismic Ua is a residual part of early clinoform deposit. After the sediments in the north and south of Ua were eroded by strong currents, the Ub and Uc started to deposit probably by a complex hydrodynamic process. These results provide new insights into the evolution of the bank and its relation with the Holocene subqueous clinoform.

The bio-barite in witherite deposits from Southern Qinling and its significance

Being stratiform or stratoid,the Huangboshuwan witherite deposit at Zhiyang and the Wenyuhe witherite-barite deposit at Zhushan occur in the lower Lower Cambrian siliceous rocks and the orebodies are remarkably controlled by lithological character and *** and oxygen isotopic studies of witherite,barytocalcite and calcite have shown that the carbon,involved in the formation of these minerals,was derived largely from organic carbon resultant from degradation,polycondensation and dehydroxylation of bio-organic matter in sediments at the early stage of *** occurrence of bio-barite strongly evidenced that Ba 2. was concentrated and settled down in the form of bio-barite on the seafloor as a result of biological processes,thereafter forming the initially enriched orebodies of barium *** witherite was metasomatic products of bio-barite under the action of sulfate-reducing bacteria and organic and inor-ganic reduction.

A New Geochemical Reaction Model for Groundwater Systems

Through a survey of the literature on geology, hydrogeology and hydrogeochemistry, this paper presents a hydrogeochemical model for the groundwater system in a dross-dumping area of the Shandong Aluminium Plant. It is considered that the groundwater-bearing medium is a mineral aggregate and that the interactions between groundwater and the groundwater-bearing medium can be described as a series of geochemical reactions. On that basis, the principle of minimum energy and the equations of mass balance, electron balance and electric neutrality are applied to construct a linear programming mathematical model for the calculation of mass transfer between water and rock with the simplex method.

Origin and evolution of alkali basaltic magma in the Okinawa Trough

The contents of major element composition of the phenocrysts and the matrix glass as well as the spinel inclusions and the melt inclusion in the phenocrysts of the basalt dredged from Station 133 of the Okinawa Trough are determined by electron microprobe. The results show that the basalt is a dor- galite consisting of phenocrysts of bytownite, chrysolite, clinopyroxene and magnetite as well as labradorite microcrystal, matrix glass and a few bits of broken vein quartz. Glassy melt inclusion and chromohercynite or chrompleonaste exist in bytownite and chrysolite. The formation of the spinels is re- lated to partial melting of mantle. The melt inclusions stand for a primary alkali dorgalitic magma, whose composition corresponds to olivine gabbro. The basaltic magma was generated from partial melting of spinel-lherzolite of the upper mantle and evolved in a process of 'alkali dorgalitic magma-trachy- basaltic magma-basdaltic trachytic magma-trachytic magma'. Assimilation and hybridization of crustal material may exist during magma upwelling in every evolutionary stage.

Morphological characteristics in the area off eastern Taiwan Island and their tectonic implications

On the basis of bathymetric data and other geological and geophysical data obtained during the first survey conducted by Chinese Mainland in the area off eastern Taiwan Island from May to June in 2.00, the morphological features of the region, the tectonic control to the seafloor topography and their tectonic implication are studied and discussed. The results have revealed that both the slope zone of the Ryukyu arc and the Ryukyu Trench present a typical morphotectonic characteristics controlled by the trench-arc system in the West Pacific Ocean. At the slope of eastern Taiwan Island the isobathic lines parallel to the coastline and distribute densely in nearly N-S direction and the slope gradient of topography is large. Such a unique feature is attributed to the collision of the Luzon arc and Eurasia continent. In the Huatung Basin, turbidity fans and sub{2. canyons are well developed, the formations of which are mainly related to the steep topography of the slope of the Luzon arc and the abundant supply of sediments. These sub{2. canyons are controlled by basement highs and strike-slip faults. On eastern side and western side of the Gagua Ridge, both the water depth and morphological features are different, but the basement of Gagua Ridge belongs to the Huatung Basin. The eastern side of the Gagua Ridge (12.°12.E) corresponds to the boundary of two plates with different ages. In the West Philippine Basin, linear ridges and troughs in a NW trending are identified, which are dissected by a NE trending transform fault. According to the seafloor topography features, the direction of the transform fault and the magnetic anomaly lineations, the seafloor of this region was formed during 60-45 Ma B. P. when the West Philippine Basin was spreading along NE-SW relative to the present orientation.

The rock magnetic properties of surface sediments from the fine-grained depositional area on the outer shelf of the East china Sea,an area surrounded by sands,were investigated with a view to providing information on the sediment *** magnetic parameters such as magnetic susceptibility,anhysteretic remanent magnetization,saturation remanent magnetization(SIRM),coercivities of SIRM,and S ratios(relative abundance of low-coercivity magnetic minerals) were measured for all 179 surface samples,and partial representative samples were examined for their magnetic hysteresis parameters,temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility and X-ray diffraction *** research indicates that the magnetic mineralogy is dominated by magnetite with a small amount of hematite and is primarily of a pseudo-single-domain to multidomain nature with a detrital *** magnetic concentration in the study area generally decreases to the east or southeast accompanied by magnetic particle fining to the east or *** geographic pattern of magnetic properties is most reasonably explained by a major source of sediment jointly from the erosion of the old Huanghe River deposit and the discharge of the Changjiang *** rock magnetic data facilitate understanding of the transport mechanism of fine-grained sediments in the outer shelf of the East china Sea.

A broad deglacial δ^(13)C minimum event in planktonic foraminiferal records in the Okinawa Trough

The equatorial Pacific upwelling zone has been suspected of playing an important role in the global atmospheric CO2.changes associated with glacial-interglacial cycles. In order to assess the influencing scope of the surface water deglacial δ13C minimum in the tropical low-latitude Pacific, the core DGKS9603, collected from the middle Okinawa Trough, was examined for δ13C records of planktonic fo-raminifera N. dutertrei and G. ruber. The planktonic fo-raminiferal δ13C records show a clear decreasing event from 2. to 6 cal. kaBP., which is characterized by long duration of about 14 ka and amplitude shift of 0.4×10-3. Its minimum value occurred at 15.7 cal kaBP. The event shows fairly synchrony with the surface water deglacial δ13C minimum identified in the tropical Pacific and its marginal seas. Because there is no evidence in planktonic foraminiferal fauna and δ18O records for upwelling and river runoff enhancement, the broad deglacial δ13C minimum event in planktonic foraminiferal records

Gravity and magnetic field and tectonic structure character in the southern Yellow Sea

The research of the geophysical survey in the cast of the southern Yellow Sea (SYS) (12.°-12.°E) in 1999 reveals that the SYS has a structure of three-uplifts and two-basins. The structure can be well concordant with the gravity and magnetic anomalies. In the basins, most of the gravity and magnetic anomalies are low and gentle. As well in the uplifts, the gravity anomalies are high positive ones,but the magnetic anomalies are plus and minus variant *** data show that the mid-uplift is a Cenozoic one. The Paleozoic is under the Q+N strata, the thickness of which is less than 1 km, with no Palaeogene. The Wunansha uplift area and the Sunan uplift area have good continuity, which indicates that they belong to the same geological unit. The basin in the northern part of SYS, which developed in the late Cretaceous period, is a Cenozoic one mainly made up of Cenozoic sediment. On the contrary, the basin in the southern part is the seaward extension of Subei basin and is a medial Cenozoic sediment basin mainly made up of Cenozoic sediment. Because of the striking left-lateral sense translation of Tanlu fault zone, the east plate of fault zone moved northward on a large scale, which generated a massive north-south pull-apart stress field to make the earth crust pulled apart, revolved and tilted, and the pulling-apart basin came into being in the upper part of the crust.
