Variations in carbon isotopic ratios (δ 13C) of C3 plants and distribution of C4 plants were investigated along an altitudinal transect on the eastern slope of Mount Gongga, and the environmental effects on them were discussed. It is shown that plants with C4 photosynthetic pathway mainly occur at altitudes below 2100 m a.s.l., suggesting that the low summer temperature is responsible for the distributional pattern. In addition, δ 13C of C3 plants increases with elevation at the region above 2000 m a.s.l. with the characteristics of humid climate, and the increase rate in δ 13C for C3 plants is about 1.3‰ per kilometer. Temperature determines the altitudinal trend of δ 13C.

Concentrations of HCHs (hexachlorocyclohexane) and DDT (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) were determined in shallow subsurface (0-5cm depth) and deep soil layers (5-20cm depth)from sliols of Yangtze river coast in Chongqing,*** of total HCHs (including α-HCH,β-HCH,γ-HCH,δ-HCH) and total DDTs (including p,p-DDE p,p-DDD o,p-DDT and p,p-DDT) in shallow subsurface soils ranged from 0.185 to 1.374 ng/g(mean 0.479ng/g) and 0.807 ng/g to 38.281ng/g (mean 7.274ng/g),respectively,and those in the deeper layers were 0.0795 to 1.692 ng/g (mean 0.564 ng/g),and from 0.308 to 88.306 ng/g (mean 13.718 ng/g), *** spatial distribution of HCHs and DDTs reflected the contamination of HCHs in this region probably came from local use of lindane and also indicated new lindane inputsin the past several years and DDT residues are from“old”sources.

Three microtine species are recovered from the Zhangping Caves of the Qingling Mountains, namely Microtus oeconomus, Caryomys inez and Caryomys eva. They are climate-sensitive ones with different ecological habits, therefore their distribution well corresponds to environmental variations. Statistical comparison of the distribution of fossil microtines and their counterparts nowadays displays that the climate variation of the studied area and its contiguity since the middle Pleistocene are: warm and humid at 493 ka ago, cool and humid at 259 ka ago―cold and humid at 205 ka ago―cool and humid at 28 ka ago, and warm and dry at present.

The mass extinction at the end-Triassic is one of the five biggest in the Phanerozoic. However,it is the least well understood among these five events, and only till last decade it became a great academic interesting subject to geologists. The evidences for this event come obviously from bivalves, brachiopods, ammonites, corals, radiolaria, ostracods and foraminifera of marine habitats, and plants and tetrapods of terrestrial realm. By contrast, for some of other groups, such as marine gastropods and marine vertebrates, no mass extinction has been recog-nized yet. The extinction event is strongly marked at specific level but shown a complicated situa-tion at generic and family levels. Dramatic changing of the environment, such as the temperature raise due to the greenhouse effect, the marine anoxic habitats caused by a sudden transgression after the regression at the end of Triassic, has been claimed to be the main cause of the extinction. Many hypotheses have been suggested to demonstrate the mechanisms of the environment changing, among which two popular ones are the bolide impact and volcanic eruption. The Triassic-Jurassic (Tr-J) boundary mass extinction event is still poorly understood because no enough data have been obtained from the Tr-J boundary successional sections of both marine and terrestrial sediments, and most of these studies were regionally restricted. The basic aspects of the event and its associated environmental conditions remain poorly characterized and the causal mechanism or mechanisms are equivocal. Some authors even doubt its occurrence. china has many successionally developed terrestrial and marine Tr-J sections. Detailed studies of these sections may be important and significant for well understanding of the event.

Palaeogene fossil Populus leaves from Lanzhou Basin and their palaeoclimatic significance

An angiosperm compression flora is found in Palaeogene from Lanzhou Basin and the cuticular analysis of Populus davidiana Dode in the flora is carefully made. Fur-thermore, the fossil cuticles are compared with the epidermal structures of extant Populus leaves growing in different en-vironments, i.e. moist, semimoist, and semiarid to arid cli-matic regions. The present experiments indicate that mature leaves of P. davidiana show leaf size from big to small, leaf cuticles from thick to thin and anticlinal walls of epidermal cells from faintness to clarity along with the increase of lati-tudes of the plant distributions, the climatic variation from moist to arid, the annual precipitation from more to less and the annual mean temperature from high to low. The fossil P. davidiana differs from the specimens collected from Shandan in semiarid to arid climatic regions but closely resembles the Wushan leaves in a semi-moist climatic area in a lot of fea-tures. In a word, the new research may reflect that the flora lives in a semi-moist climatic environment. The present dis-covery of compression of Paleogene Populus davidiana is of great significance to studying vegetation types, climatic and environmental changes during the primal uplifting of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

In coastal environments, fine-grain sediments often aggregate into large and porous flocs. ElectroMagnetic Current Meters （EMCM） and Laser In Situ Scattering and Transmissometry （LISST-ST） have been deployed within a Spartina alterniflora marsh of the Luoyuan Bay in Fujian Province, china, to measure the current velocity, the floc size and the settling velocity between 15 and 22 January 2008. During the observations, the near-bed water was collected in order to obtain the suspended sediment concentration （SSC） and constituent grain size. Data show that：（1） the nearbed current velocities vary from 0.1 to 5.6 cm/s in the central Spartina alterniflora marsh and 0.1–12.5 cm/s at the edge; （2） the SSCs vary from 47 to 188 mg/dm 3 . The mean grain size of constituent grains varies from 7.0 to 9.6 μm, and the mean floc sizes （MFS） vary from 30.4 to 69.4 μm. The relationship between the mean floc size and settling velocity can be described as： w s =ad b , in which w s is the floc settling velocity （mm/s）, a and b are coefficients. The floc settling velocity varies from 0.17 to 0.32 mm/s, with a mean value of 0.26 mm/s, and the floc settling velocity during the flood tide is higher than that during the ebb tide. The current velocity and the SSC are the main factors controlling the flocculation processes and the floc settling velocity.

Information from eleven profiles of eolian earthy red silty clay and loess of the middle of the Late Miocene to Holocene age have been studied and correlated. A complete summary profile with projected isotopic ages and fossil-bearing beds has been assembled. The profile is subdivided into 12 stratigraphic units proceeding from the lower (older) to the upper (younger) one. The character of mammalian assemblages contained in each unit was analyzed and the corresponding pa- leo-climatic environments were deduced. The environmental character of each period and the change from the middle of the Late Miocene at about 8.0 Ma B.P. up to the Holocene progressed from the hot semiarid and semi-moist, warmer-moist, warm-moister of the Late Miocene. To slightly less warm moist, cool-dry, slight-warmer-moister of the Pliocene; later the cool to cold dry periods alternated frequently with the mild semiarid and semi-moist periods of the Quaternary. Vegetation progressed from the grasslands with sparse woods, wooded shrub-grasslands and subtropical forest-grasslands of the Late Miocene age to sparse grasslands and dry grasslands of the Pliocene; and to sparse grasslands, dry grasslands and tundras of the Quaternary. The climate changes in the Neogene were of low-amplitute in a generally warm-humid background. Those of the Quaternary were of higher am- plitude with a longer phase. Cool or cold dry and slightly warm semiarid and semi-moist climates al- ternated on a generally cool-dry background. The tendency since the start of the Quaternary was the change to more northern and western shift in the Loess Plateau, with progressively cooler and dryer conditions. The dramatic uplift of the Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) Plateau and the forming and expansion of the Arctic ice sheet might be the main reasons of the more pronounced changes in the Quaternary.

Fluids and noble gases of mantle-derived materials are important tracers for the mantle information. Compositions of primary fluids and noble gases in mantle-derived minerals from the Yishu area, Shandong Province, china, were tested by the methods of heat-bursting and heat-melting respectively. The fluids are mainly composed of CO2, CO and H2, which account for about 90% of the total, and are similar to the mantle-derived rocks from other areas of eastern china; ratios of 3He/4He in almost all samples range from 0.82 Ra to 2.74 Ra, whereas 40Ar/36Ar from 299.5 to 758.8. Both ranges are much lower than those of the typical ocean mantle-derived samples (such as MORB) and primarily reflect the influences of the atmospheric components and the radiogenic isotopes. Ratios of C/3He range from 27.6×109 to 1050×109, N2/Ar from 927 to 56612, and N2/3He from 2.5×109 to 27×109, similar to those in western United States and New Zealand which belong to the tectonic plate collision regions. The ratios fall in the intersect of mantle-crust-atmosphere in the comprehensive tracer-charts, reflecting the influences of the atmosphere and the crusts with organic components. Our results suggest that the composition of the primary fluids and the isotopic ratios of the noble gases may either reflect the evolution process of mantle-derived rocks connected with the rise and eruption of magma, or the influence of the ancient subduction-plate on the continental mantle of this region.

古DNA研究至今已经历20多年时间,近年来,在生物系统进化和谱系发生等方面有着越来越广泛的应用.我国古DNA研究起步较晚,主要集中于我国近几千年来古人类DNA提取和个体及群体遗传关系的研究,其他动植物古DNA研究相对较少.国际上古DNA研究不仅涉及内容广泛,而且在实验体系的规范和结果论证等方面有着严格的标准.本文系统介绍了规范古DNA实验体系的具体建立方法,强调空白提取对照、PCR水对照等各类对照的设立及可重复性实验在古DNA序列可靠性验证中的重要作用;并对近年来古DNA研究的新方法、新技术,如多重PCR、第二代高通量测序技术等进行了详细介绍.
