Formaldehyde is an important carcinogen commonly found *** indoor sources have been intensively *** study on outdoor formaldehyde concentration,which is potentially an important source to indoors,remains *** study attempts to characterize temporal and spatial distribution of the atmospheric formalde-hyde concentration in Chinese *** variation of ambient formaldehyde was examined in 6 cities and peak hours were identified between 12:00 pm and 3:00 ***,outdoor formaldehyde concentrations were measured in the peak hours in 30 cities during the summer months of Jul.-Aug.,*** formaldehyde concentrations in the peak hours fell into a range of 0.005-0.087 mg/m^(3)(median value is 0.027 mg/m^(3)),87.7%of which have exceeded the chronic reference exposure criteria of 0.009 mg/m^(3) set by Office of Environmental Health Hazard *** risk analysis suggests that exposure to ambient formaldehyde could cause a median carcinogenic risk of 1.9×10^(−5)(3.17×10^(−6)-6.13×10^(−5)),higher than threshold limit of 10−*** correlation analysis of the 30 cities shows that ambient summertime atmospheric formaldehyde concentrations of the city are positively correlated with its Gross Domestic Product(r=0.48).We also found that the outdoor formaldehyde concentrations in urban areas(median:0.017 mg/m^(3))is slightly higher than those in suburban areas(median:0.013 mg/m^(3)).Results here prove that outdoor formaldehyde is ubiquitous in Chinese cities and reduces effectiveness of ventilation in dilution indoor *** it would underestimate air cleaner capacity needed by a factor of about *** should be accounted for in health analysis and air quality engineering control design of built environment in the future.

Treatment outcomes for different subgroups of nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients treated with intensity-modulated radiation therapy

Although many studies have investigated intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC),sample sizes in the reported studies are usually small and different in outcomes in different T and N subgroups are seldom ***,we evaluated the outcomes of NPC patients treated with IMRT and further explored treatment strategy to improve such *** collected clinical data of 865 NPC patients treated with IMRT alone or in combination with chemotherapy,and classified all cases into the following prognostic categories according to different TNM stages:early stage group (T1-2N0-1M0),advanced local disease group (T3-4N0-1M0),advanced nodal disease group (T1-2N2-3M0),and advanced locoregional disease group (T3-4N2-3M0).The 5-year overall survival (OS),local relapse-free survival (LRFS),and distant metastases-free survival (DMFS) were 83.0%,90.4%,and 84.0%,*** early disease group had the lowest treatment failure rate,with a 5-year OS of 95.6%.The advanced local disease group and advanced nodal disease group had similar failure pattern and treatment outcomes as well as similar hazard ratios for death (4.230 and 4.625,respectively).The advanced locoregional disease group had the highest incidence of relapse and death,with a 5-year DMFS and OS of 62.3% and 62.2%,respectively,and a hazard ratio for death of *** with IMRT alone,IMRT in combination with chemotherapy provided no significant benefit to locoregionally advanced *** results suggest that the decision of treatment strategy for NPC patients should consider combinations of T and N stages,and that IMRT alone for early stage NPC patients can produce satisfactory ***,for advanced local,nodal,and locoregional disease groups,a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy is recommended.

Kaolin deposits of weathering-residual type make up a large proportion in different types of kaolin depos-its and are widely used in ceramics, electron ceramics, rubber and paper industries. This paper discusses sys-tematically this type of kaolin deposit with respect to their features of occurrence, mineralogical and chemicalcomposition and transformation of minerals during supergene processes, thus providing some basic data forthe rational exploitation and utilization of the kaolin resources.

Vortex genesis over the Bay of Bengal in spring and its role in the onset of the Asian Summer Monsoon

Physical processes associated with onset of the 1998 Asian summer monsoon were examined in detail using multi-source datasets. We demonstrated that strong ocean-atmosphere-land interaction in the northern Indian Ocean and tropical Asian area during spring is a fundamental factor that induces the genesis and development of a monsoon onset vortex over the Bay of Bengal (BOB), with the vortex in turn triggering onset of the Asian summer monsoon. In spring, strong surface sensible heating over India and the Indochina Peninsula is transferred to the atmosphere, forming prominent in situ cyclonic circulation, with anticyclonic circulations over the Arabian Sea and northern BOB where the ocean receives abundant solar radiation. The corresponding surface winds along the North Indian Ocean coastal areas cause the ocean to produce the in situ offshore currents and upwelling, resulting in sea surface temperature (SST) cooling. With precipitation on the Indochina Peninsula increasing from late April to early May, the offshore current disappears in the eastern BOB or develops into an onshore current, leading to SST increasing. A southwest-northeast oriented spring BOB warm pool with SST >31°C forms in a band from the southeastern Arabian Sea to the eastern BOB. In early May, the Somali cross-equatorial flow forms due to the meridional SST gradient between the two hemispheres, and surface sensible heat over the African land surface. The Somali flow overlaps in phase with the anticyclone over the northern Arabian Sea in the course of its inertial fluctuation along the equator. The convergent cold northerlies on the eastern side of the anticyclone cause the westerly in the inertial trough to increase rapidly, so that enhanced sensible heat is released from the sea surface into the atmosphere. Conditional gene expression and gene deletion are important experimental approaches forexamining the functions of particular gene products in mouse models,These strategies exploiting Cre-medi-ated site-specific DNA recombination have been incorporated into transgenic and gene-targeting proceduresto allow in vivo manipulation of DNA in embryonic stem cells(ES cells)or living *** Cre/lox Psystem has become widely used in conditional gene targeting,conditional gene repair and activation,induc-ible chromosome translocation,and chromosome *** this project,we have employed the univer-sal transgenic system and the liver-specific promoter system for tightly temporal and liver-specific control ofCre gene expression in mice that(1)integrates the advantages of the Tet-on gene expression system and Cre//ox P site-mediated gene activation,and(2)simplifies the scheme of animal crosses through a combination oftwo control elements in a single transgene.A liver-specific apoE promoter was inserted into the promotercloning site upstream of the rtTA cassette of pCore construct to generate the transgene construct pApoErtTA-tetO-Cre,followed by demonstrating stringent regulation of doxycycline(Dox)-induced Cre-mediated re-combination in the lox P-flanked transcription STOP cassette-modified BEL-7402 *** is to say,in theabsence of Dox,the Cre gene is not expressed and will not induce site-specific recombination between twolox P sites,whereas on exposure to Dox,the Cre gene will be expressed and the recombination will ***,these data indicate that the Tet-on gene expression system is able to successfully and stringentlycontrol Cre expression in vitro,which lays a solid foundation for efficient and spatio-temporal Cre geneactivation in transgenic mice.
