Large-scale boron nanowire nanojunctions and their highly-oriented arrays

Highly oriented multiple boron nanowire nanojunctions with unilateral feather- like morphology were first successfully prepared using a radio-frequency magnetron sputtering method. The branched boron nano-feathers always nucleate and grow on the same sidewall of the stems, and align in parallel to form multiple T- and/or Y-type nanojunctions. The diameters of the branches and the stems are in the range of 2.—40 and 60—80 nm, respectively. The thinner branches and thicker stems of the boron nanowires self-assembled into large-scale, highly ordered arrays on various substrates. During the formation and self-assembly of the arrays, no template or catalyst was needed. We believe that the approach presented here can be used to fabricate heterostructures with bottom-up assembly of a wide variety of one-dimensional nanostructures via the rational design of targets and the proper control of the experimental conditions.

By employing a model potential including the electron exchange energy, we extend the semiclassical closed orbit theory to study the multielectron atoms. Using special region-splitting consistent and iterative method, we figure out the closed orbits in the corresponding classical system and calculate the recurrence spectra of triplet helium atoms in parallel electric and magnetic fields at scaled energy ε=?0.03,n≈40,n=0. The core-scattering effects have been taken into account, which lead to more peaks in the spectra. It has also been confirmed by means of the direct comparison between the spectral portrait in such a plot and those of hydrogen case. In order to compare the theoretic results with experiment, we investigate the closed orbits and recurrence spectra of helium atoms for the similar exchange potential but applied only by single electric field at scaled energy ε=?2.7 case. The spectra are in good agreement with the experimental observation. We conclude that our model is correct and it is necessary to consider the exchange effect for determining the photoabsorption spectra of multielectron atoms in strong external fields.

Fabrication of YBCO superconducting thick films by electrophoresis has been widely reported. However, the value of critical current density (J c) is far from what the practical application requires. The superconducting thick films are obtained using top-seeded melt growth method with different proportional Y2.aCuO5 (Y2.1) addition. High-pressure oxygen has been used in the annealing process to improve the uniformity of the oxygen content in the superconducting thick films. When 40mol% Y2.1 powder is added to the YBa2.u3O7–5 (Y12.) powder,J c for the superconducting thick film by approaches described above reaches 7.008×103 A/cm2.(77 K, 0 T), which is greater than the value ever reported.

The characteristics of pairwise entanglement and local polarization (LP) are dis-cussed by studying the ground state (states) of the Heisenberg XX model. The re-sults show that: the ground state (states) is (are) composed of the micro states with the minimal polarization (0 for even qubit and 1/2.for odd qubit); LP and the prob-ability of the micro state have an intimate relation, i.e. the stronger the LP, the smaller the probability, and the same LP corresponds to the same probability; the pairwise entanglement of the ground state is the biggest in all eigenvectors. It is found that the pairwise entanglement is decreased by the state degeneracy and the system size. The concurrence approaches a fixed value of about 0.3412.(for odd-qubit chain) or 0.3491 (for even-qubit chain) if the qubit number is large enough.

The nano-silica/polystyrene composite particles were prepared and characterized according to the following steps. First, the nano-silica particles were pretreated with surfactants under ultrasonic field. Second, the dispersion polymerization of styrene in a water/ethanol (1/6, weight ratio) medium, with poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) as stabilizer and 2.2.-azobisizobu- tyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator in the presence of nano-silica particles was initiated with N2.purging through ultrasonic irradiation by taking its advantages of multieffect, i.e. dispersion, crushing, activation, and initiation. Finally, the polymerization kinetics characteristics were studied, and the encapsulation of composite particles was investigated with optical microscope, SEM, TEM, FTIR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

Based on the moving least-square (MLS) approximation, the complex variable moving least-square approximation (CVMLS) is discussed in this paper. The complex variable moving least-square approximation cannot form ill-conditioned equations, and has greater precision and computational efficiency. Using the analytical solution near the tip of a crack, the trial functions in the complex variable moving least-square approxi- mation are extended, and the corresponding approximation function is obtained. And from the minimum potential energy principle, a complex variable meshless method for fracture problems is presented, and the formulae of the complex variable meshless method are obtained. The complex variable meshless method in this paper has greater precision and computational efficiency than the conventional meshless method. Some examples are given.

The dynamical properties of Rydberg hydrogen atom near a metal surface are presented by using the methods of phase space analysis and closed orbit theory. Transforming the coordinates of the Hamiltonian, we find that the phase space of the system is divided into vibrational and rotational region. Both the Poincaré surface of section and the closed orbit theory verify the same conclusion clearly. In this paper we choose the atomic principal quantum number as n = 2.. The dynamical character of the exited hydrogen atom depends sensitively on the atom-surface distance d. When d is sufficiently large, the atom-surface potential can be expressed by the traditional van der Waals force and the system is integrable. When d becomes smaller, there exists a critical value dc. For d > dc, the system is near-integrable and the motion is regular. While chaotic motion appears for d < dc, and the system tends to be non-integrable. The trajectories become unstable and the electron might be captured onto the metal surface.

The symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) that has the ability in decompo- sition of the total interaction energy into physically meaningful components is used to provide a more fundamental understanding of intermolecular forces. This work was motivated by the diffi- culty of standard SAPT in computing the intermolecular interactions for large energetic dimer systems. SAPT based on Kohn-Sham orbitals (SAPT(DFT)) proves computationally efficient for these large systems, but has been shown to perform poorly for interaction energy components. The deficiencies of SAPT(DFT) result from wrong asymptotical behaviors of commonly used exchange-correlation potentials. To remove the deficiencies, two asymptotic corrections by means of van Leeuwen and Baerends (LB) model potential and Fermi-Amaldi (FA) type potential were applied into three small test systems comprising He2. HF2.and (N2.2.and a set of larger ni- tramide dimers at several separations. The results showed that when utilizing newly developed frequency-dependent density susceptibilities (FDDS) technique for computing dispersion energy, the FA asymptotic correction is very effective to circumvent these deficiencies in SAPT(DFT) and yields a good accuracy over the LB correction. The FA corrected SAPT(DFT) approach is capa- ble of correctly predicting all the quantitative trends in binding energies for all test cases and substantially reduces computational cost as compared with the standard SAPT calculations. The successful application of the approach to nitramide dimer demonstrates that it potentially pro- vides a good means to calculate accurately intermolecular forces in larger system such as en- ergetic systems.

By analyzing the formation mechanism of a supersonic gas jet,a set of equations which describe the atomic beam properties were established. The influence of initial temperature,initial pressure,background gas pressure and pumping speed was discussed in detail. A simulation program was developed based on the equations,and the results under different initial conditions were obtained. The results are in good agreement with the experimental data,and suggest that,in order to get much smaller transverse momentum in collision experiments,it is necessary to lower the initial temperature and the initial pressure of the supersonic gas jet,together with increasing the pumping speed. These results are very instructive for construction of a new generation of cold supersonic gas jets.
