Thermal behavior and phase behavior in blends of liquid crystalline poly(aryl ether ketone) with lateral methoxy groups (M-PAEK) and poly(aryl ether ether ketone) containing thioether units (S-PEEK) have been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized light microscopy (PLM) techniques. The results indicate that the composition of the blends has great effect on the phase behavior and morphology. Thin films of pure M-PAEK and S-PEEK crystallized from the melts exhibit typical mosaic and spherulitic structures, respectively. For the blends with higher M-PAEK contents (> 50%), an unusual ring-banded spherulite with structural discontinuity is formed. The bright core and rings of the ring-banded spherulites under PLM are composed of M-PAEK phase, while the dark rings consist mainly of S-PEEK phase. For the 50:50 M-PAEK/S-PEEK blend, the ring-banded spherulites and S-PEEK spherulites coexist, which implies that a partial phase separation between the two components takes place in the melting state. In S-PEEK-rich blends, a volume-filled spherulite is produced. In addition, the effect of isothermal crystallization temperature on the phase behavior, especially the ring-banded spherulite formation in the blends, is discussed.

A theoretical analysis of an ultra-short pulse converted to Terahertz radiation via optical rectification in nonlinear optical crystal is presented here;several factors that affect optical-to-THz conversion efficiencies are discussed;pulse durations affect the conversion efficiency effectively:when crystal length is equal to the optimal crystal length lc,optical-to-THz conversion efficiency is the highest,but for the periodically-inverted electro-optic crystals,conversion efficiency is almost proportional to the crystal length when absorption can be *** account of the absorption of crystals,effective length of crystal is Leff=0.63.α,there is no apparent increase of conversion efficiency and the conversion efficiency approaches to a constant eventually when the crystal length is increased.

Two building factors-a longer thermal lag of more than one hour for building envelops and a lag of indoor radiation to convert into cooling load-have impact on the instantaneous heat input and instantaneous cooling *** the two factors should be taken into account when selecting the weather parameters for air-conditioning system *** paper developed a new statistic method for the rational selection of coincident solar irradiance,dry-bulb and wet-bulb *** method was applied to historic weather records of 25 years in Hong Kong to generate coincident design weather *** the results show that traditional design solar irradiance,dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperatures may be significantly overestimated in many conditions,and the design weather data for the three different constructions is not kept constant.

Based on the propagation theory of partially coherent light in the space-frequency domain, the anomalous spectral behavior and spectral switches in the far field of partially coherent and polychromatic light diffracted at an aperture are studied. It is shown that, as compared with spatially fully coherent and polychromatic light whose spectral anomalies are induced only by aperture diffraction, the spectral anomalies and spectral switches of partially coherent and polychromatic light depend on the aperture diffraction, spatial correlationβ and bandwidth of the original spectrum. Detailed numerical calculations are made to illustrate the behavior of spectral switches of partially coherent and polychromatic light, and the results for spatially fully coherent and polychromatic light are treated as a special case ofβ=1 and included in our theory.

Current serum neutralization assays based on the inhibition of the cytopathic effect（Nt-CPE） need to ma nipulate live viruses, which are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and have the potential exposure to infectious agents, so a safe and objective assay via pseudovirus for the fast and efficient detection of enterovirus 71（EV71） neutralizing antibodies was developed. First, we generated EV71 pseudovirus containing firefly luciferase gene in place of the capsid gene P1 in EV71 genome. Vero cells infected with 200 CCID50（50% cell culture infective dose） of EV71 pseudovirus for 24 h were found to have the best performance. Seval sera were measured by EV71 pseudoparticle neutralization assay（Nt-PPN） and the conventional serological method Nt-CPE. Neutralizing antibody titers measured by Nt-PPN and those obtained by Nt-CPE demonstrate a high correlation between the two methods. Overall, the PPN assay represents a valid alternative to conventional serological methods for the evaluation of EV71 neutralizing anti bodies. This method can be used for detecting neutralizing antibodies of other picornaviruses, such as hepatitis A vi rus（HAV） and coxsackievirus 16（CVA16）, and make it possible to determine whether there is cross-reactivity be tween EV71 and CVA16.

Adsorption Breakthrough of Benzene in the Fixed Bed of Modified Activated Carbon under Different Humidity Conditions

The breakthrough curves of benzene and water on modified activated carbons（ACs） were ***-programmed desorption（TPD） experiments were conducted to measure the TPD curves of benzene and water on modified and unmodified ACs and to estimate the activation energy for the desorption of benzene on the modified *** with unmodified ACs,two modified ACs were prepared by using two different types of silane,designated by KH560 and *** results showed that the activation energy for the desorption of benzene on KH560/AC and 1706/AC was higher than that on unmodified *** addition,the activation energy for the desorption of water on KH560/AC and 1706/AC was lower than that on unmodified *** breakthrough curves of benzene obtained from the experimental observations under different humidity conditions were compared with the results of the TPD *** results show that the modified ACs are less affected by water,whereas the unmodified ACs are more affected by water,indicating that surface modification by organosilane compounds can improve the adsorption of benzene on the activated carbo,which weakens the adsorption of water.

The electrooxidation of 3.3.,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) is dependent on the pH value of Britton-Robinson (B-R) buffer solution. In this work, the electrooxidation behavior of TMB was investigated with a SnO2:F film optically transparent thin-layer spectroelectrochemical cell. TMB underwent one two-electron electrooxidation process in the pH range from 2.0 to < 4.0, and two successive one-electron electrooxidation processes in the pH range from 4.0 to < 7.0 in the B-R buffer solution. At pH 6.5, the electrooxidative product of TMB generated a subsequent chemical reaction to yield an azo compound. Several spectroelectrochemical techniques, such as thin-layer cyclic voltammetry, thin-layer cyclic voltabsorptometry, thin-layer potential-controlled electrolysis absorptometry, thin-layer single-potential-step chronoabsorptometry, thin-layer dou-ble-potential-step chronoabsorptometry, thin-layer single-potential-step open-circuit relaxation chronoabsorptometry, were applied to this investigation. The formal potential E0’ and the electron transfer number corresponding to the electrooxidation of TMB in B-R buffer solution, and the reaction rate constant of the subsequent chemical reaction were determined.

Making use of a set of quantum chemistry methods, the harmonic potential surfaces of the ground state (S0(1Ag)) and the first (S1(1B3.)) excited state of pyrazine are investigated, and the electronic structures of the two states are characterized. In the present study, the conventional quantum mechanical method, taking account of the Born-Oppenheimer adiabatic approximation, is adopted to simulate the absorp-tion spectrum of S1(1B3.) state of pyrazine. The assignment of main vibronic transitions is made for S1(1B3.) state. It is found that the spectral profile is mainly described by the Franck-Condon progression of totally symmetric mode ν6a. For the five totally symmetric modes, the present calculations show that the frequency differences between the ground and the S1(1B3.) state are small. Therefore the displaced harmonic oscillator approximation along with Franck-Condon transition is used to simulate S1(1B3.) absorption spectra. The distortion effect due to the so-called quadratic coupling is demonstrated to be unimportant for the absorption spectrum, except the coupling mode ν10a. The calculated S1(1B3.) ab-sorption spectrum is in reasonable agreement with the experimental spectra.

A PSTAIRE CDK-like protein localizes in nuclei and cytoplasm of Physarum polycephalum and functions in the mitosis

CDKs play key roles in controlling cell cycle progression in all eukaryotes. In plants, multiple CDKs are present, among which the best characterized CDKs are PSTAIRE CDKs. In this study, we carried out Western blot, immunoelectron microscopy and antibody treatment with an anti-PSTAIRE monoclonal antibody to explore the subcellular localization and functions of PSTAIRE CDKs in Physarum polycephalum. The results of Western blot and immunoelectron microscopy showed that in P. polycephalum, a PSTAIRE CDK-like protein was 3. kD in molecular weight and located in both nuclei and cytoplasm. In nuclei, the protein was mainly associated with chromosomes and nucleoli. The expression of the PSTAIRE CDK-like protein in both the plasmodia and nuclei showed little fluctuation through the whole cell cycle. When treated with an anti-PSTAIRE monoclonal antibody at early S phase, the cells were arrested in S phase, and the mitotic onset of P. polycephalum was blocked for about 1 h when treated at early G2 phase.
