Humic substances constitute the major organic fractions of soils, sediments and natural waters, and play a dominant role in the binding, mobilization, transport and ultimate fate of organic contaminants in subsurface systems. In this paper, two humic acid samples, Guanting and Tianjin, with different origin and chemical compositions have been investigated with AFM imaging for their adsorption and aggregation behaviors on mica. While the Tianjin humic sample is found to form small spheres with 2.0 to 330 nm in diameter at lower concentrations, irregular loop-chain assemblies of hundreds of nanometer in diameter with the chain width of about 4. nm are dominant for the Guanting humic sample, which may attribute to the more polar aliphatic fractions in the chemical composition in the latter. The heterogeneous and polydisperse nature of humic substances with multiple structural features, such as sponge-like structures, perforated sheets, aggregate of spheres, branches and chain-like assemblies etc., is apparent at higher concentrations for both humic samples, showing morphologically new evidence for the dominant view of the humic dual-mode sorption model. With naphthalene introduced, the assemblies of Guanting humic substances clearly become more compact with significantly narrowed branches and less porous the perforated sheet-like structures. It is indica- tive of that smaller nanometer scale rings present along the perforated assemblies could potentially represent hydrophobic domains, which may facilitate the adsorption and aggregation of naphthalene onto the natural particle surfaces and therefore lead to an important role of dissolved humic sub- stances in the sorption of environmental pollutants.

The cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p2.( waf1/cip1/sdi1) is an important negative regulator in control of cell cycle. Its functions of inhibiting cancer cell growth and its effects on expression of Gl phase cyclins and related CDKs are a worthy topic for study. The plasmid expressing p2. with high level was transformed to human breast cancer cells, and the expression of p2. in cells was enhanced, then the cell growth rate, anchorage-independent growth and tu-morigenecity were tested, at the same time the expression levels of cyclinD1, CDK4.

This paper reports the study of ancient potteries unearthed from the Guangfulin site in Shanghai. From the external features of these potteries, archeologists can classify them into two different cultural types: Liangzhu culture (local culture) and a new culture which might be derived elsewhere, but they can not recognize whether they were produced in the same place. Proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) and instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) were used to measure the chemical compositions of the samples and the results were analyzed using multivariate statistics. We found that the two methods can complement each other and their database can be mutually referenced in the study of ancient potteries. Experimental results show that the compositions of the potteries from the two cultural types are different, which means that the materials for ancient potteries of new culture originate from elsewhere. This supports the archaeologists’ speculation that a group of ancient people migrated to Shanghai from some other places 4.00 years ago.

Upper water structure over the last 4.million years in the northern South china Sea (SCS) was reconstructed by sea surface temperature (SST) and primary productivity estimated by changes in the abundance of planktonic foraminifer, planktonic foraminifer transfer function, and the accumulation rate of benthic foraminifera. Results of SST and primary productivity show that SST gradually decreased since 4.Ma, but differential seasonal temperature and primary productivity increased in steps mainly at about 3.1, 2.7, 2.1, 1.6, 0.9 and 0.5 Ma. Comparison with tectonics and orbital variations indicates that phased rising of the Tibet since 3.6 Ma, closing of Panama and Indonesian seaways, and orbital changes were responsible for the changes of upper water structure in the SCS, respectively.

The study site is located in Qianyanzhou experimental station and the surrounding area. Based on CBERS-02.satellite data and field measurement, we not only discussed the relationship between NDVI and biomass of two species of coniferous plantations, namely, Pinus massoniana Lamb and Pinus elliottii Engelm, but also introduced the biomass models based on NDVI. The comparison between measured biomass in Qianyanzhou and biomass derived from CBERS-02.CCD data showed that it is feasible to estimate biomass based on NDVI. But its limitations cannot be ignored. This kind of model depends on the dominant vegetation species. There are some effect factors in estimating biomass based on NDVI. This paper analyzes these factors based on fine-resolution CBERS-02.CCD data and some conclusions are drawn: In Qianyanzhou, the area with good vegetation coverage, the nonlinearity of NDVI has little influence on scaling-up of NDVI. As a result of surface heterogeneity, scaling-up can cause NDVI within each pixel to change. Because scaling-up can cause pixel attribute to change, the applicability of biomass model is one of the sources of error in estimating biomass.

We determined the variation tendency of viscosity (η) at various solids load- ing (α) for 3Y-TZP suspension as a function of dispersant concentration (Cw) using vis- cosity measurement, measured the diameter of particles as a function of Cw in very dilute suspension using light scattering method, and obtained the surface features of the sedi- ment of suspension with different Cw using SEM. We also discussed the influence of the microstructure of adsorbed polymer layers on particles and their interactions in the dis- persing medium on the stability of suspension. Then two different stable states and two different unstable states for 3Y-TZP suspension were given. Accordingly, the (Cw, η), (Cw, α), and (α, η) two-parameter, and (Cw, α, η) three-parameter stability maps were con- structed. Based on the DLVO theory calculations, the dispersant concentration, particle distance (r), and interparticle potential energy (VT) maps with various solids loading for 3Y-TZP aqueous suspension were also constructed. In (Cw, r) two-parameter coordinate system, the stable motion region map for particles was established. The Cw, α, and VT,max (the highest potential energy) surface of the potential barrier map was obtained through calculation and simulation on the basis of the surfaces of Cw, r, VT maps introduced above. The (Cw, α) two-parameter stability map was then obtained from the Cw, α, VT,max map. The results showed that this theoretical map can qualitatively prove the experimentally obtained results—the existence of different dispersed states of particles in suspension system and the variation tendency of suspension stability with changing each parame- ter—were reasonable.

Electroluminescent properties of three ternary europium complexes with different phenanthroline derivatives

Three ternary Eu(III) complexes with general formula of Eu(DBM)3LN (DBM = dibenzoylmethanate, and LN (N = 1-3 ) stand for three different 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives) have been synthesized for vacuum deposition films-based electroluminescent devices. The complex Eu(DBM)3L3 (L3 = 2.phenyl-3-[3-(carbazol-9-yl)propyl]imidazo[4.5-f]1,10-phenan-throline) was designed with an effort to combine the electron-transporting phenanthroline platform and the hole-transporting carbazole group into one molecule expecting to improve both electron and hole transporting properties simultaneously. The results show that the variation of the neutral ligands in Eu(III) mixed ligand complexes is a simple and effective approach to the improvement in the thermal stability, PL and EL properties of materials. A double-layer device with the configuration of ITO/TPD (50 nm)/Eu(DBM)3L3 (50 nm)/Mg0.9Ag0.1 (2.0 nm)/Ag (100 nm) exhibited Eu(III)-based pure red emission with a maximum brightness of 561 cd/m2.at 16 V, and an onset driving voltage of 8 V. A device with the configuration of ITO/TPD (50 nm)/[Eu(DBM)3L3 (5 nm):BCP (5 nm)]4.BCP (2. nm)/AIQ (10 nm) Mg0.9Ag0.9 (110 nm)/Ag (100 nm) gave high efficient and pure red light emission with a luminance of 14.9 cd/m2. The gravity data from the sea region to the west of 12.° E of the South Yellow Sea have been processed and the feature of gravity fields analyzed. An experience relationship formula on the filter wavelength and corresponding depth has been put forward. Combined with the geological and seismic data, the deep tectonic framework and structural characters as well as possible favourable prospecting district for hydrocarbon in the South Yellow Sea have been discussed and analyzed.
