The origin of angiosperms has been a focus of intensive research for a long *** so-called pre-Cretaceous angiosperms,including Schmeissneria,are usually clouded with *** expel the cloud around the enigmatic Schmeissneria,the syntype and new materials of Schmeissneria collected previously in Germany and recently in china are *** materials include female inflorescences and *** latter are old materials but were under-studied *** microscopy and scanning electron microscope observations indicate that the fruits in these infructescences have in situ seeds enclosed,and that the ovaries are closed be fore *** the plants meet two strict criteria for angiosperms:angiospermy plus *** Schmeissneria in angiosperms will extend the record of angiosperms up to the Early Jurassic,more compatible with many molecular dating conclusions on the age of angiosperms,and demanding a reassessment of the current doctrines on the origin of *** the phylogenetic relationship of Schmeissneria to other angiosperms apparently is still an open question,this study adds to research concerning the origin of angiosperms.

A new early angiosperm leaf species is reported from the Xinzhuang Formation in Wuhe County, Anhui Province. It is probably of Barremian or slightly later in geological age. The fossil leaf is small, no more than 0.6 cm both in length and in width. The leaf veins are well preserved and clearly visible under a low power microscope. Leaf ar-chitectural analysis shows that such a leaf should belong to the first leaf rank of Hickey, i.e. the most primitive one. There are no early angiosperm leaves published completely similar to ours. A new species name of Dicotylophyllum minutissimum sp. nov. is established for the present leaf fos-sils.

Caytoniales are an important group of seed plants,and the nature of their female reproductive organ may influence interpretations of the seed plant phylogeny and the origin of *** not convincingly demonstrated by clear evidence,cupules on previously described specimens were interpreted as being distichously arranged,implying that the cupule-bearing organ in Caytoniales was a pinnate *** a female reproductive organ of Paracaytonia hongtaoi *** ***.(Caytoniales)is reported from Liaoning,*** well preserved specimen clearly shows a spiral arrangement of cupules along the reproductive axis,suggesting that the cupule-bearing organ in Caytoniales is not a megasporophyll but a *** new information on the axial nature of the cupule-bearing organ in Caytoniales has significant implications on the placement of Caytoniales in the seed plant phylogeny and interpretation of the relationship between Caytoniales and angiosperms.

The holotype of Yangtzedonta Yu, 1985 and its type species, Y. primitiva Yu, 1985, is an incomplete specimen of Xianfengella prima He et Yang, 1982. Therefore, based on the principle of priority, the names Yangtzedonta and Y. primitiva Yu (1985) should be abandoned. The fact that ventral valve of Xianfengella is bilaterally symmetrical indicates that they are not the left valve of a bivalved mollusc, as originally proposed by Yu. At present, the oldest certain bivalve is Xianfengoconcha elliptica Zhang, which occurs in the Early Cambrian Qiongzhusi Stage in china. The oldest known rostroconch is Heraultipegma yunnanensis He et Yang, which first occurs in the third small shelly fossil assemblage zone of the Early Cambrian Meishucunian Stage. The oldest known monoplacophoran, Maikhanella pristinis (Jiang), first occurs in the first small shelly fossil assemblage zone (Meishucunian Stage). The Ordovician radiation is among the major bioevents in earth history that have drawn great attention from geologists all over the world, and there have been hundreds of publications treating various aspects of this radiation. The study of the event involves a broad spectrum of research fields and concerns many scientific questions. Many opinions and hypotheses have been proposed on the triggering and controlling factors of the radiation. Herein the authors critically review the study of the Ordovician radiation and dissect four principal aspects by synthesizing the studies over the past years: (1) relationships of the radiation to fossil clades, ecotypes, and environments, such as water depth, latitude, and climate; (2. the ecological structure and food webs of Ordovician marine organisms; (3) fossil records and true biodiversities; and (4) likely triggering and controlling factors of the Ordovician radiation. The authors also recommend approaches to furthering studies of these aspects.
