SHRIMP zircon U-Pb geochronology of early Mesozoic felsic igneous rocks from the southern Lancangjiang and its tectonic implications

The SHRIMP zircon U-Pb geochronology of three typical samples, including two monzo nitic granites from the Lincang batholith and a rhyolite from the Manghuai Formation are presented in the southern Lancangjiang, western Yunnan Province. The analyses of zircons for the biotite monzonitic granites from the northern (02.X-13.) and southern (2.JH-10) Lincang batholith show the single and tight clusters on the concordia, and yield the weighted mean 2.6Pb/2.8U ages of 2.9.4.± 3.0 Ma and 2.0.4.± 3.6 Ma, respectively, representing the crystallized ages of these granites. The zircons for the rhyolitic sample (02.X-95) from the Manghuai Formation give a weighted mean 2.6Pb/2.8U age of 2.1.0 ± 5.0 Ma. These data suggest that the igneous rocks from the Lincang granitic batholith and Manghuai Formation have a similar crystallized age. In combination with other data, it is inferred that both were generated at a narrow age span (~2.0 Ma) and were originated from the postcollisional tectonic regime. An early Proterozoic 2.6Pb/2.8U apparent age of 1977±4. Ma is additionally obtained from one zircon from the biotite monzonitic granite (southern Lincang batholith), indicative of devel- opment of the early Proterozoic Yangtze basement in the region. These precisely geochronological data provide important constraints on better understanding the Paleozoic tectonic evolution of the Tethys, western Yunnan Province.

Magnetic properties of Jiaxian red clay sequences from northern chinese Loess Plateau and its paleoclimatic significance

Detailed rock magnetism investigation of the Jiaxian red clay sequences indicated that there are common magnetic mineralogy properties in red clay and loess-paleosol sequences from the chinese Loess Plateau as well as the marked properties of themselves, magnetic min-erals mainly with magnetite, maghemite, hematite, and possibly limonite/goethite contributing to the magnetic behavior. Meanwhile, it is found that the strong paleosol in red clay sequences has a lower coercivity and higher content of ultra-fine ferrimagnetic grains than that of the weak pa-leosol, which is similar to loess and paleosol in upper Wucheng Loess sequences, and indicates that humid conditions and relatively strong pedogenesis play a significant role in the increase of ultra-fine magnetic minerals and transformation of the magnetic minerals. This suggests that, like Quaternary loess-paleosols, the change of characteristics of paleoclimatic conditions of the late Tertiary red clay deposits is fluctuant. In addition, the results of magnetic hysteresis properties show that the applied saturated field for samples from the Jiaxian red clay sequences is higher than that of the samples from eastern and southern chinese Loess Plateau. It is obviously shown that there exist more hard magnetic minerals and relatively weak biochemical processes in the Jiaxian red clay sequences on northern chinese Loess Plateau. We conclude that the paleocli-matic environment is different between northern and eastern/southern chinese Loess Plateau, and it should be more arid in northern chinese Loess Plateau.

A group of 2.6,10,15,19-pentamethyli- cosenes (PMIΔ) containing 1―5 unsaturated double bonds has been identified in the sea floor sediments from the Gulf of Mexico at the Green Canyon 2.8 *** PMIΔ compounds are distributed between nC2. and nC2. on the mass chromatogram of aliphatic fraction. Their δ 1{4. values are very much depleted in 1{4. and in the range of ?86.7‰ to ?115.5‰, whereas the δ 1{4. values of companion n-alkanes range from ?2..4. to ?{4..6‰. These unsaturated PMIΔ com-pounds are typical biomarkers derived from the an-aerobic oxidation of methane mediated by meth-ane-oxidizing archaeal bacteria and indicative of the gas seeps or even the occurrence of gas hydrates in the deep sea sediments.

Experimental study of ore gabbro liquid immiscibility

In this paper, the authors present the results of a preliminary experimental study on partial melting of fine-grained gabbro, Panzhihua, Sichuan Province, china. Experiments were conducted under (confining) pressure ranging from 4.0 to 500 MPa and temperature of 900— 12.0℃. The results show that the initial melt is distributed along grain boundaries and triple junctions. Liquid immiscibility phenomena are noted in the melt with two compositional different melt phases, i.e. matrix and sphere phases. The matrix phase is relatively rich in Si, Al and K, and is depleted in Mg, Fe, Ca, Na and Ti, whereas the sphere phase shows opposite trends. The calculation of the melt free energy indicates that the liquid immiscibility is governed by the rule of thermodynamics, as the liquid immiscibility would result in the decrease in free energy of the melt system. The field relationships suggest that the liquid immiscibility may have played an important role in the generation of ore magma of Panzhihua V-Ti magnetite ore deposit. This study thus provides experimental constraints on the mechanism of the formation of V-Ti magnetite deposite.

The Juancheng chondrite, a new meteorite falling recently in Juancheng County, Shandong Province, china, is classified as an H5 (S2. chondrite based on the compositions of olivine (Fa= 19.2. σ Fa=0.4.) and low-Ca pyroxene (Fs=16.9, σ Fa=0.4.. The plagioclase in the Juancheng chondrite is rich in CaO, indicating a relatively high metamorphic temperature the parent body underwent.

Discovery of seep carbonate nodules as new evidence for gas venting on the northern continental slope of South china Sea

Seep carbonate nodules were firstlycollected from the southwestern Dongsha area onnorthern continental slope of South china Sea formineralogical and geochemical studies. The resultsof X-ray diffraction show that carbonate nodules arecomposed of Fe-rich domolite,siderite and a few cal-cite and aragonite, as well as a small quantity ofnon-carbonate minerals such as goethite, quartz andclay minerals. Fe-rich dolomite and siderite charac-terized by euhedral microcrystalline structure weredirectly precipitated at cold seeps. The δ 13. valuesfor Fe-rich dolomite and siderite in the bulk nodulesvary from ?18.2.‰ to ?3..07‰, and the δ 18O valuesrange from 0.4.2}to 2.76‰. Their moderate depleted13. reflects that carbon origin is possibly thermoge- netic gas or mixed gas, which is evidence of gasventings in the seafloor. Moreover, massive wormtube fossils related to cold seeps were found on thesurfaces of carbonate nodules, and the conduitsand/or channels in semi-solidified nodules whichwere not filled by carbonate or sediment were alsoobserved. A preliminary conclusion is that activemicro gas venting with a conduit/channel diameterrange from 2.0 μm to 600 μm possibly exists inmodern seafloor of the carbonate nodule area.

Independent of Indochina extrusion, the South china Sea experienced a process from passive continental rifting to marginal sea drifting. According to the fault patterns in the Beibu Gulf basin and the Pearl River Mouth basin, the continental rifting and early spreading stage from 3.2}to 2. Ma were controlled by extensional stress field, which shifted clockwise from southeastward to south southeastward. From 2. Ma on, the sea spread in NW-SE direction and ceased spreading at around 15.5 Ma. Integrated geological information with the assumption that the South china Sea developed along a pre-Cenozoic weakness zone, we did analogue experiments on the South china Sea evolu- tion. Experiments revealed that the pre-existing weakness zone goes roughly along the uplift zone between the present Zhu-1 and Zhu-2.depression. The pre-existing weakness zone is composed of three segments trending NNE, roughly EW and NEE, respectively. The early opening of the South china Sea is accompanied with roughly 15° clockwise rotation, while the SE sub-sea basin opened with SE extension. Tinjar fault was the western boundary of the Nansha block (Dangerous Ground), while Lupar fault was the eastern boundary of the Indochina, NW-trending rift belt known as Zengmu basin developed between above two faults due to block divergent of Indochina from Nansha. In the experiment, transtensional flower structures along NW-trending faults are seen, and slight inversion occurs along some NE-dipping faults. The existence of rigid massifs changed the orientations of some faults and rift belt, and also led to deformation concentrate around the massifs. The rifting and drifting of the South china Sea might be caused by slab pull from the proto South china Sea subducting toward Borneo and/or mantle flow caused by India-Asia collision.

Ethyl-cyanoethyl cellulose [(E-CE)C]/acrylic acid (AA) becomes a cholesteric liquid crystalline solution withvivid colors when the (E-CE)C concentration is 4.0}wt%～52.wt%. (E-CE)C/polyacrylic acid (PAA) composites withcholesteric structure were prepared by polymerzing AA in (E-CE)C/AA liquid crystalline solutions. The layers of orderedpolymer chains in the cholesteric phase were inclined during polymerization and the degree of the inclination depended onthe polymerization temperature and the concentration of the solution before polymerization. The cholesteric structure in thecomposites could not be changed when temperature was lower than 100℃. Cross-linking of the PAA in compositesimproved their water-resistance. The cholesteric order of the composites without cross-linking was destroyed when theywhere immersed in water. The color derived from the selective reflection of the cholesteric phase of the cross-linkedcomposites turned from blue to red after the composites absorbed water. The color of the composites could be returned to theoriginal one when the absorbed water was removed from the swollen composites.

Alterations in DNA methylation and genome structure in two rice mutant lines induced by high pressure

By using high-pressure treatment, two mutant lines were obtained from agenetically stable japonica rice cultivar Bijing3.. Genomic DNA of the mutant lines, together withthe original line (Bijing3.), was either undigested or digested by Hpa ⅡIMspⅠ, and then subjectedto molecular analysis using two markers, ISSR and RAPD. Results indicated that changes in the PCRamplification profiles of both markers are apparent in the two mutant lines compared with theoriginal rice cultivar, suggesting that there had been both sequence changes and DNA methylationmodifications in the mutant lines. Southern blot analysis using diverse sequences, including twocellular genes (S2.and S3., a set of retrotransposons (Osr7, Osr3., Tos19 and more), and a MITEtransposon family (mPing and Pong), confirmed the results, and indicated that changes in DNAmethylation pattern, genomic structure, and possible activation of some transposons indeed occurredin the mutant lines. Moreover, these changes are stably maintained through selfed generations and indifferent organs. Thus, our results indicate that it is possible to obtain stable mutants in riceby high pressure treatments, and the molecular basis of the mutants may include both genetic andepigenetic changes. Therefore, high hydrostatic pressure seems a promising approach for plantmutagenesis.

Geochemistry of high-Mg andesites from the early Cretaceous Yixian Formation, western Liaoning: Implications for lower crustal delamination and Sr/Y variations

85 volcanic rocks of the Yixian Formation from the Sihetun type section werecollected and analyzed for geochemical and isotopic compositions. Major element compositionsindicate that the Sihetun volcanic rocks are high magnesium andesites with some basalts occurring atthe bottom of section. The Sihetun high magnesium andesites (SiO_2.= 52.82.59.3. wt%, Al_2._3.14.15-16.3.wt%) show many characteristics of adakites such as depletion in heavy rare-earth elements(HREE; Yb = 1.03.1.88 μg/g) and Y(12.2. μg/g) and high Sr (62.-13.0} μg/g) and Sr/Y(3.0}88), withhigh La_N/Yb_N ratio (10-2.). They share similar major and trace element characteristics to volcanicrocks from the Xinglonggou Formation except their lower Nd isotope ratios (^(14.3}Nd/^(14.)Nd(13.Ma) = 0.5118-0.5119, ε_(Nd) (13.Ma) = -11.6-13.8, ^(87)Sr/^(86)Sr (13. Ma) = *** were interpreted in a way that eclogite that formed at the base of thickened Archean lowercrust of the North china craton foundered into the convecting mantle and subsequently melted andinteracted with peridotite. However, compared to the Xinglonggou volcanic rocks, the source of theSihetun magma contained more ancient continental crustal material in order to explain its evolved Ndisotopes. The age of the Sihetun Formation was 12. to 13. Ma, and this indicates that delaminationlasted to the early Cretaceous period. The Sr contents and Sr/Y ratios of the Sihetun high-Mgandesites show significant negative correlations with SiO_2.for samples with SiO_2.> 56%. Thesesuggest that the Sr and Sr/Y values were reduced due to fractional crystallization of ***, the effect of crystallization on volcanic Sr and Sr/Y ratio has to be taken intoaccount.
