earthquake-controlled event deposits and its tectonic significance from the Middle Permian Wandrawandian Siltstone in the Sydney Basin, Australia

The Sydney-Bowen basin in eastern Australia is an elongate back arc-converted foreland basin system situated between the Lachlan Fold Belt in the west and the New England Fold Belt in the east. The Middle Permian Wandrawandian Siltstone at Warden Head near Ulla- dulla in the southern Sydney Basin is dominated by fossiliferous siltstone and mudstone, with a large amount of dropstones and minor pebbly sandstone beds. Two general types of deposits are recognized from the siltstone unit in view of the timing and mechanism of formation. One is rep- resented by the primary deposits from offshore to subtidal environments with abundant drop- stones of glacial marine origin. The second type is distinguished by secondary, soft-sediment deformational deposits and structures, and comprises three layers of mudstone dykes of seismic origin. In the latter type, metre scale, laterally extensive syn-depositional slump deformation structures occur in the middle part of the Wandrawandian Siltstone. The deformation structures vary in morphology and pattern, including large-scale complex-type folds, flexural stratification, concave-up structures, faulting of small displacements accompanied by folding and brecciation. The slumps and associated syn-sedimentary structures are attributed to penecontemporaneous deformations of soft sediments (mostly silty mud) formed as a result of mass movement of un- consolidated and/or semi-consolidated substrate following an earthquake event. The occurrence of the earthquake event deposits supports the current view that the Sydney Basin was located in a back-arc setting near the New England magmatic arc on an active continental margin during the Middle Permian.

Complexity and Self-Organized Criticality of Solid earth System(Ⅰ)

The author puts forward the proposition of Complexity and Self Organized Criticality of Solid earth System in the light of: (1) the science of complexity studies the mechanisms of emergence of complexity and is the science of the 2.st century, (2. the study of complexity of the earth system would be one of the growing points occupying a strategic position in the development of {2. in the 2.st century. By the proposition we try to cogitate from a new viewpoint the ancient yet ever new solid earth system. The author abstracts the fundamental problem of the solid earth system from the essence of the generalized geological systems and processes which reads: the complexity and self organized criticality of the global nature, structure and dynamical behavior of the whole solid earth system emerging from the multiple coupling and superposition of non linear interactions among the multicomponents of the earths material and the multiple generalized geological (geological, geophysical, and geochemical) processes . Starting from this cognizance the author proposes eight major themes and the methodology of researches on the complexity and self organized criticality of the solid earth system.

Geothermal and fluid flowing simulation of ore-forming antimony deposits in Xikuangshan

The Xikuangshan Antimony Deposit located in the Mid-Hunan Basin, china, is the larg- est antimony deposit in the world. Based on the hydrogeological and geochemical data collected from four sections, Xikuangshan-Dajienao (AO), Xikuangshan-Dashengshan (BO), Xikuang- shan-Longshan (CO) and Dafengshan (DO) in the Basin, an advanced metallogenic model related to deep-cyclic meteoric water of Xikuangshan Antimony Deposit is put forward in this paper using a model of heat-gravity-driving fluid flow transportation. The simulation results show that the ore-forming fluid of the deposit mainly comes from the Dashengshan and Longshan areas where BO and CO sections are located if the overall basin keeps a constant atmospheric precipitation and infiltration rate during mineralization, and that the average transportation speed of the ore-forming fluids is about 0.2.0.4 m/a.

Metallogenic Districts of Yangtze Cratonic Rim at the Edge of Chaos

Combining the science of complexity with ore geology, the author puts forward a new theory of metallogenesis: “complexity and self organized criticality of metallogenic dynamic systems”, and three fundamental theories are raised for it. The ore genesis and regularity of ore formation of four metallogenic districts around the Yangtze craton in china are studied with this theory. It is found that “metallogenic districts of Yangtze cratonic rim are all at the edge of chaos”. This proposition is expounded by four determinative criteria of the edge of chaos for metallogenic districts of Yangtze cratonic rim.

Sm-Nd and zircon SHRIMP U-Pb dating of Huilanshan mafic granulite in the Dabie Mountains and its zircon trace element geochemistry

The mafic granulites from Huilanshan are outcropped on the center of the Luotian dome in the northern Dabie Mountains. The Sm-Nd isochron defined by granulite-facies meta-morphic minerals (garnet + clinopyroxene + hypersthene) yields an age of 13. ± 18 Ma indicating the early Cretaceous granulite-facies metamorphism. The cathodoluminescence (CL) images of zircons from the granulite show clearly core-mantle-rim structures. The zircon cores are charac-terized by typical oscillatory zoning and highly HREE enriched patterns, which suggests their magma origin. Some zircon cores among them with little Pb loss give SHRIMP U-Pb ages rang-ing from 753 to 780 Ma, which suggests that the protolith of Huilanshan granulite is Neopro-terozoic mafic rocks. The zircon mantles usually cut across the oscillatory zone of the zircon cores have 3―10 times lower REE, Th, U, Y, Nb and Ta contents than the igneous zircon cores but have high common Pb contents. These characteristics suggest that they were formed by hydrothermal alteration of the igneous zircons. The part of zircon mantles with little Pb loss give a similar SHRIMP U-Pb age (716―780 Ma) to the igneous zircon cores, which implies that the hydrothermal events occurred closely to the magmatic emplacement. In view of the strong early Cretaceous magmatism in the Luotian dome, consequently, the Huilanshan mafic granulite was formed by heating of the Neoproterozoic mafic rocks in mid-low crust, which caused the granu-lite-facies metamorphism underneath the Dabie Mountains. The similarity between the granulite metamorphic age (13. ± 18 Ma) defined by Sm-Nd isochron and K-Ar age of 12.―12. Ma given by amphible from the gneiss in Luotian dome suggests a rapid uplifting of the Luotian dome, which may result in further exhumation of the ultrahigh pressure metamorphic rocks in the Dabie Mountains.

Middle Triassic Stratigraphy and Sedimentary Paleogeography of South china

The Middle Triassic was the great turning period of South china from marine sedimentary basins to continental deposits or erosion. This paper summarizes the distribution and variation of the stratigraphic sequences, lithofacies and biotas in various Middle Triassic depositional basins of South china. The close relationship between the biotic paleoecology and the lithofacies as well as the sedimentary facies, thus the paleogeography, is demonstrated. The process of the transition from the depositional paleogeography and its relation to the tectonic settings is concluded.

Abundant studies revealed that shallow intrusions of the Yanshanian epoch resulted in the mass mineralization of the Tongling region. Various evidences showed there existed a concealed magma chamber at ?10 km depth in the middle part of this region during Yanshanian epoch, from which the ore-forming magma was generated and then transported to the superficial layer. Yet the transport network and flow mechanism of the shallow ore-bearing magma, the key problem associ- ated with ore-forming process, was relatively little focused on. Integrate analysis of structural me- chanics, statistical fractal and geological facts suggested that NE trending high-angle fold-related thrust faults and the tessellated basement ones served as the main pathways for the shallow magma’s transporting, moreover, the saddle void spaces among adjacent strata in the folds upon this fault system provided the place for magma’s emplacement. So the folds in the upper part and faults in the lower part of the upper crust constituted the fluid’s transport and emplacement network. During the deformation of geologic body with multi-layer structure, the layers in the upper part tended to fold when received the jacking stress from the lower part, while the lower one inclined to fault undergoing loads of the upper part. And the producing probability of this structure assemblage was highly in- creased in the condition, such as in the Tongling area, that the mechanic rigidity of the lower layers was stronger than that of the upper ones. For the pre-existence of fluid-conducting network, the top magma with high volatile in the magma chamber transported rapidly to the superficial layer in dyking pattern, located in the void spaces of folds, filled and reconstructed them. The sudden drop of pres- sure caused the fluid unmixing from the magma and mass ore-forming elements concentration. Crustal　Texture　and　Rheological　Evolution　of　Tongbai－Dabie　Orogenic　Belt，china

The crustal texture and rheological evolution of the Tongbai-Dabie orogenic belt are approached from a physical standpoint on the basis of a large body of geological, chronological and geophysical data available in the region. Rheological profiles showing variation of rock Strength with depth in the continental crust are constructed for 1-D crustal structure limited to the Present and Meso-Neoproterozoic structural configurations of the deformed belt, respectively .It is emphasized that the crustal texture and composition have been heterogeneous with the rheological stratification and complicated rheological evolution since the Meso-Neoproterozoic at least. The data appear that the Tongbai - Dabie tectonic belt is a polyphase collisional orogen with evidence for cyclically transition from compressional to extensional regimes and rheological behavior in the levels of the crust.

Characteristics of Coal Accumulation of Transform-Extensional Basins in Linear Fracture Zones: A Case Study of the Meihekou Basin

This paper discusses the characteristics of coal accumulation of transfor-extensional basins in linear fracture zones on the basis of an analysis of tectonic evolution and sequence stratigraphy in the Meihekou basin. Coal accumulation of the basin occurred mainly in the accelerated rifting period of the transtentional regime and in the late period of tectonic transformation of the transpressional regime. In the former period, swamps developed in shallow lakes. The thickness of coal seams was controlled by the activity of fault block. Thick coal was formed in a downfaulted trough. In the latter period, swamps developed in a braided fan delta plain. The coal seams are thin and have poor lateral continuity. The thickness of coal seams was controlled by the migration of water channels in the braided plain.

Zircon geochronology and geochemistry of mafic xenoliths from Liaoning kimberlites:Track the early evolution of the lower crust,North china Craton

Mafic xenoliths from Paleozoic Fuxian kimberlites (Liaoning Province) mainly in- clude garnet granulite, with minor pyroxene amphibolite, meta-gabbro and pyroxene syenite. The SiO2.contents of the xenoliths are from 47.3 wt% to 49.9 wt%. The granulites are mainly coarse-medium grained and reasonably with well-developed granoblastic (mostly polygonal) texture, contain the assemblage of garnet + plagioclase + pyroxene + K-feldspar ±phlogopite. The mineral assemblage of the amphibolites is plagioclase + pyroxene + amphibole ±K-feldspar, with the equilibrium temperature and pressure conditions of 744—82.℃ and 0.76—0.88 GPa. The granulites are regarded as derivation from the lower crust depth (more than 2. km), below the amphibolites. Garnet granulites compositionally correspond to sub-alkalic basalt, and have wide ranges of Ni abundance (13.—840 ppm), and Nb/Y (0.12.1.85), Nb/U (3.51—53.86) and Ta/U (0.38—2.48). The amphibolite and the syenite correspond to alkalic basalt. The Fuxian ma- fic xenoliths are regarded as the metamorphic product of the underplated magmas (including fractional crystallization or not) experienced the contamination with the pre-existed crustal com- ponents, and partly effected by kimberlitic magmas. The concordant ages of zircons for the gab- bro (2.10—2.80 Ma) and the near-concordant upper intercept ages of zircons for the garnet granulite and pyroxene amphibolite (2.78—2.38 Ma) indicate that they are currently known as the oldest deep-seated xenoliths from the lower crust of the North china Craton. These ages recorded the formation of the united Eastern Block of the North china Craton, That is, Neoar- chean (2.6—2.5 Ga) is an important continental crustal growth period of the North china Craton. The lower intercept age of the garnet granulite (1853 Ma) recorded an important tectonic thermal event in Paleoproterozoic. This event was probably related to collision of the East and West block, and resulted in the final assembly of the North china
