Using the CTD data investigated at about 330 stations in the southern Taiwan Strait, the northeastern South china Sea and their adjacent seas in August and September of 1994, this paper anayses the sectional distributions of salinity in 10 selected sections and discusses the possibility of the Kuroshio's intrusion into the northeastern South china Sea and the southern Taiwan Strait. The results show that: as the main stream of Kuroshio passes by the northern Luzon Strait during the survey period, the 'Kuroshio-influenced water' with some hydrological features of the Kuroshio may extend through the Luzon Strait to the sea areas near both the Dongsha Islands and the Taiwan Shoal of the southern Taiwan Strait.

The effects of various factors on the synthesis process and the performances of product, including batch feeding way and the dosage of the radical initiator, the system concentration, the reaction temperature and the reaction time were discussed. A kind of polycarboxylate superplasticizer with allyl alcohol polyethylene glycol, maleic anhydride and methacrylic acid sulfonic sodium as main raw materials has been synthesized. Their relative effectiveness as dispersants was evaluated in cement paste by measuring paste fluidity. The optimum parameters of technology and the appropriate proportion of raw materials were obtained. As a result,the new high performance superplasticizer suitable for high-performance concrete has been synthesized. The structure of copolymer was characterized and analyzed by FT-IR spectra. Results indicated that product copolymer structure was consistent with the ideal molecular structure designed.

Ecological experiments were conducted to examine the effects of seawater containing elevated par- tial pressure of carbon dioxide （p CO2.800 × 10 -6 , 2.000 × 10 -6 , 5 000 × 10 -6 and 10 000 × 10 -6 ） on the survival and reproduction of female Acartia pacifica, Acartia spinicauda, Calanus sinicus and Centropages tenuiremis, which are the dominant copepods in the southern coastal waters of china. The results show that the effects of elevated p CO2.on the survival rates of copepods were species-specific. C. sinicus, which was a macro-copepod, had a higher survival rate （62.01%–71.96%） than the other three species （5.00%–2..67%） during the eight day exposure. The egg production rates of C. sinicus, A. spinicauda and C. tenuiremis were significantly inhibited by the increased p CO2.and the exposure time duration. There were significantly negative impacts on the egg hatching success of A. spinicauda and C. tenuiremis in the p CO2.2.000 × 10 -6 and 10 000 × 10 -6 groups, and, in addition, the exposure time had noticeably impacts on these rates too. This study indicates that the reproductive performances of copepods were sensitive to elevated p CO2., and that the response of different copepod species to acidified seawater was different. Furthermore, the synergistic effects of seawater acidification and climate change or other pollutant stresses on organisms should be given more attention.

The genetic diversity and differentiation of 6 mud crab Scylla serrata populations from southeastern china are investigated using allozyme electrophoresis. The mean number of alleles per locus population is 1.3 ± 0.1; the percentage of polymorphic loci per population is 2..3; the observed heterozygosity ranges from (0.195±0.083) to ( 0.2.1±0.090) and the expected heterozygosity ranges from ( 0.105±0.043 ) to ( 0.131±0.047 ). The coefficient of gene differentiation among populations is low (Fst =0.032., indicating that only 3.2.% of the total genetic diversity comes from inter-population, while the remaining 96.8 % comes from intra-population differences. The genetic distance among populations is 0.000-0.008 (the average is 0.002.. Gene flow among the populations is large (Nm = 7.56).Genetic structure is very similar among 6 Scylla serrata populations.

By the inverse nth power gravitation in physics,a novel classifier for data classification,called the I-n-PG classifier,is *** the I-n-PG model,training samples from each class are regarded as a system of particles and an I-n-PG field is defined for each class.A test sample belongs to the class whose particle system has the maximum I-n-PG to this test *** on large numbers of real data show that the I-n-PG classifier can provide a good classification *** with the nearest neighbor classifier and SVM,performances of the I-n-PG classifier are always superior/close to the better one of them,and thus the I-n-PG classifier has also a wide range of adaptability to data sets.

The authors have observed submicroscopically the transformation of spermatid and the sperm structure in the spermatogenesis process of Cyclma sinensis. The results show during the spermatid differentiation the nuclear morphology transforms from the elliptical into the cylindrical shape. The morphological transformation of the nuclear chromatin experiences from the small masses of fine granule aggregation to granular substructures with a granular diameter of 2. - 41 nm (containing a few masses), then to large coarsely granules with a diameter of 36. 8-52. 6 nm and at last to the homogenate with high electron density. The proacrosomal granules secreted by Golgi complex aggregate to form a large spherical granule which moves gradually to the anterior pole of the nucleus to join the acrosomal formation. The fusion of some mitochondria and the disintegration of a few ones result in the mitochondrial number decrease and volume enlargement. Finally, the mitochondrial ring which consists of five mitochondria and locates at the posterior pole of the nucleus, surrounds the proximal and distal cen-trioles to form the main structure of the middle section of sperm. The spermatozoon of Cyclma smensis is of the primitive type and consists of head, middle section and tail flagellum. In addition, it is of interest to note that a special spherical structure in the subacrosomal area is observed.

Based on the CTD data obtained in the southern Taiwan Strait and its adjacent areas in August and September of 1994, the distributional features of the temperature and salinity in the studied area have been analyzed in detail. The results are as follows: (1) There are two low temperature and high salinity regions in the nearshore area between Dongshan and Shantou and in the southeastern Taiwan Shoal, respectively, which may be caused by upwellings. (2. There exists a cold eddy in the northwestern sea area and a warm eddy with two high temperature cores in the eastern sea area of the Dongsha Islands, which are related to the anti-cyclonic turning of the seawater near the Dongsha Islands. (3) A westward high temperature and high salinity water tongue extends through the northern Luzon Strait and reaches the sea areas near the Dengsha Islands and southern Taiwan Strait.

The interaction of imidazole with Co electrodes in an electrochemical system was studied by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and electrochemical methods. The SER spectra of Co in an imidazole solution as a function of the applied potential were analyzed and the assignment of the Raman bands was made. It was found that there were three kinds of sur-face species on the Co surface in different potential regions and they were interchangeable de-pending on the potential. In a relatively negative potential region (?1.2.to ?0.9 V), imidazole was adsorbed on the surface and its orientation might change from a vertical configuration via the N-end of the pyridine ring to a tilted configuration via the C2.N3 double bond. In a more positive potential region (?0.8 to ?0.7 V), the SERS signal from the adsorbed imidazole weakened and finally disappeared, meanwhile the signal from the Co and imidazole complex strengthened gradually. At the open circuit potential (?0.6 V), we detected very strong bands from the Co ox-ides. By comparing the Tafel curves of the Co electrode in the solution without and with imidazole, we found that imidazole has a marked effect on the corrosion inhibition of the Co electrode. This result demonstrates that we may be able to reveal the complicated interaction of surface species with metal surface at the molecular level by combining the SERS and electrochemical methods.

A branching model {Z n} n≥0is considered where the offspring distribution of the population’s evolution is not only dependent on the population size, but also controlled by a Markovian environmental process {ξ n} n≥0. For this model, asymptotic behaviour is studied such as limn→∞Z n and limn→∞Z n/m n in the case that the mean m k, θof the offspring distribution converges to m>1 as the population size k grows to ∞. In the case that {ξ n} n≥0is an irreducible positive recurrent Markov chain, certain extinction (i.e. P(Z n=0 for some n)=1) and noncertain extinction (i.e. P(Z n=0 for some n)<1) are studied.
