AIM: To study local therapeutic efficacy, side effects, andcomplications of radiofrequency ablation (RFA), whichis emerging as a new method for the treatment ofpatients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) withcirrhosis or chronic hepatitis and metastatic liver ***: Thirty-six patients with primary andsecondary liver cancers (2. with primaryhepatocellular carcinoma, 12.with colorectal cancerliver metastases and 3 with other malignant livermetastases), which were considered not suitable forcurative resection, were include in this study. Theywere treated either with RFA (RITA2.00, MountainView, California, USA) percutaneously (n=2.)orintraoperatively (n=16).The procedures wereperformed using the ultrasound guidance. The qualityof RFA were based on monitoring of equipments andsubject feeling of the practitioners. Patients treatedwith RFA was followed according to clinical findings,radiographic images, and tumor ***: Thirty-six patients underwent RFA for 4.nodules. RFA was used to treat an average 1.3 lesionsper patient, and the median size of treated lesions was2.5 cm (range, 0.5-9 cm). The average hospital staywas 5.6 days overall (2.8 days for percutaneous casesand 7.9 days for open operations). Seven patientsunderwent a second RFA procedure (sequentialablations). Sixteen HCC patients with a high level ofalpha fetoprotein (AFP) and 9 colorectal cancer livermetastases patients with a high level of serumcarcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) have a great reductionbenefited from RFA. Four (11.1 %) patients hadcomplications: one skin burn; one postoperativehemorrhage; one cholecystitis and one hepatic abscessassociated with percutaneous ablations of a largelesion. There were 4.deaths: 3 patients died from localand system diseases (1 at 7 month, 1 at 9 month, and 1at 12.month), 1 patients died from cardiovascular shock,but no RFA-related death. Variations of gene expression and DNA sequence are genetically associated. The goal of this study was to build genetic networks to map from SNPs to gene expressions and to characterize the two different kinds of networks. We employed mutual information to evaluate the strength of SNP-SNP and gene-gene associations based on SNPs identity by descent (IBD) data and differences of gene expressions. We applied the approach to one dataset of Genetics of Gene Expression in Humans, and discovered that both the SNP relevance network and the gene relevance network approximated the scale-free topology. We also found that 12.09% of SNP-SNP interactions matched 2..4.% of gene-gene interactions, which was consistent with that of the previous studies. Finally, we identified 4. hub SNPs and 115 hub genes in their relevance networks, in which 2. hub SNPs were associated with 2. hub genes.

From the analysis on the problem of selection, data acquisition, quantification and accuracy check in the indicators to desertification degree both at home and abroad, one might conclude that in the existing assessment of desertification degree there is a prevailing tendency which is the substitution of absolute landscape for relative land degradation, namely, assessment of desertification degree is that of absolute landscape state to some extent. As a result the reassessment accuracy of desertification scope, damaging degree and control effect are affected. The regaining and establishment of the initial and final ecological datum level of land degradation are the prerequisite to the establishment of normal scientific indicator system. From the viewpoint of this three design principles of indicators to the desertification degree are put forward: the zonal principle of indicator systems decided by the ecological datum level corresponding to their bioclimatic zones, the hierarchical principle of indicator systems decided by different spatial scales and the resolutions of different sensors and principle of landscape types based on the 3S as core-indicator.

The liver is the commonest site of distant metastasis ofcolorectal cancer and nearly half of the patients withcolorectal cancer ultimately develop liver involved duringthe course of their diseases. Surgery is the only therapythat offers the possibility of cure for patients with hepaticmetastatic diseases. Five-year survival rates after resectionof all detectable liver metastases can be up to 4. %.Unfortunately, only 2. % of patients with colorectal livermetastases are candidates for liver resection, while the othersare not amenable to surgical resection. Regional therapiessuch as radiofrequency ablation and cryotherapy may beoffered to patients with isolated unresectable metastasesbut no extrahepatic diseases. Hepatic artery catheterchemotherapy and chemoembolization and portal veinembolization are often used for the patients with extensiveliver metastases but without extrahepatic diseases, whichare not suitable for regional ablation. For the patients withmetastatic colorectal cancer beyond the liver, systemicchemotherapy is a more appropriate choice. Immunotherapyis also a good option when other therapies are used incombination to enhance the efficacy. Selective internalradiation therapy is a new radiation method which can beused in patients given other routine therapies Without effects.

A Mo-Si-C-N multi-layered anti-oxidation coating was in-situ fabricated by introducing nitrogen atmosphere during the fused sintering of Mo-Si slurry pre-layer on carbon/carbon composites. The phase composition and microstructure of the Mo-Si-C-N coating were characterized by X-ray diffractometry, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The Mo-Si-C-N coating exhibited a three-layered structure. Besides the MoSi2.Si main-layer and the SiC bonding-layer, a surface layer of about 10 μm in thickness was synthesized on the coating surface. The surface layer mainly consisted of SiC nanowires and contained some Si3N4.and Si phases. SiC nanowires of 10 to 2.0 nm in diameter presented a terrace and distortion structure. Transmission electron microscopy indicated that the SiC nanowires grew along the preferred 〈111〉 direction. During oxidation test, SiC nanowires transmuted into SiO2.glass, which can play an important role in improving the oxidation resistance of C/C composites.
