Vortex genesis over the Bay of Bengal in spring and its role in the onset of the Asian Summer Monsoon

Physical processes associated with onset of the 1998 Asian summer monsoon were examined in detail using multi-source datasets. We demonstrated that strong ocean-atmosphere-land interaction in the northern Indian Ocean and tropical Asian area during spring is a fundamental factor that induces the genesis and development of a monsoon onset vortex over the Bay of Bengal (BOB), with the vortex in turn triggering onset of the Asian summer monsoon. In spring, strong surface sensible heating over India and the Indochina Peninsula is transferred to the atmosphere, forming prominent in situ cyclonic circulation, with anticyclonic circulations over the Arabian Sea and northern BOB where the ocean receives abundant solar radiation. The corresponding surface winds along the North Indian Ocean coastal areas cause the ocean to produce the in situ offshore currents and upwelling, resulting in sea surface temperature (SST) cooling. With precipitation on the Indochina Peninsula increasing from late April to early May, the offshore current disappears in the eastern BOB or develops into an onshore current, leading to SST increasing. A southwest-northeast oriented spring BOB warm pool with SST >31°C forms in a band from the southeastern Arabian Sea to the eastern BOB. In early May, the Somali cross-equatorial flow forms due to the meridional SST gradient between the two hemispheres, and surface sensible heat over the African land surface. The Somali flow overlaps in phase with the anticyclone over the northern Arabian Sea in the course of its inertial fluctuation along the equator. The convergent cold northerlies on the eastern side of the anticyclone cause the westerly in the inertial trough to increase rapidly, so that enhanced sensible heat is released from the sea surface into the atmosphere. The S-L (She and Leveque) scaling law,also named the hierarchical similarity theory,has been extensively tested for the turbulence made in the laboratory,but seldom been tested for the turbulence in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL).In this paper, the S-L scaling law is applied to the turbulence in the ABL observed under unstably stratified conditions and over different types of underlying *** results of analyses show that over this type of homogeneous and flat underlying surface,such as the underlying surface in HUBEX (Huaihe River Basin Energy and Water Cycle Experiment),vertical speed and temperature fields well satisfy the S-L scaling *** the turbulence over the homogeneous but rather rough underlying surface of forest and under unstably stratified conditions in PFRD (Park Falls Ranger District of the Chequamegon National Forest,Wisconsin,USA),the analyses show that the vertical speed and temperature fields sometimes conform sometimes do not conform to the S-L scaling ***,at a time,either both of the vertical speed and temperature fields conform to the S-L scaling law,or both of them do *** speed fields in both of the field experiments do not satisfy the S-L scaling *** new explanation of the above-mentioned phenomena is given.

Annual precipitation fields secular variation over global land areas for 1948—2.00

The secular variation over the global land an-nual precipitation (GLAP) fields for 1948—2.00 is investi-gated. Evidence suggests that the GLAP abruptly reduced around 1978 and experienced a decrease of 0.54 mm/a, on average. Fuzzy clustering is used to group the annual pre-cipitation over commonly-used 36 latitudes belts into six belts for examining its secular variation. The results show that, except northern high-latitudes (60°—90°N) where it is slightly increased, the precipitation is decreased, especially in 35°N—35°S, and the diminution is the maximum of 0.98 mm/a at tropics. Moreover, identification of 1948—2.00 flood/drought years on a global basis is made, showing no-ticeable interdecadal variations. During the years of warm (cold) events the precipitation decreases (increases) by 15.4 mm (14.4 mm) per year, on average. It can be assumed that global warming and frequent ENSO occurrences from the end of the 1970s maybe serve as the root cause of the dimi-nution.

The El Nio/La Nia and the Southern Oscilla-tion are an interannual phenomenon involved in the tropicalPacific Ocean-atmosphere interactions. In this paper, basedon a kind of simple coupled ocean-atmosphere model forENSO, using the perturbed theory and method, the asymp-totic behavior of solution of corresponding problem is stud-ied. It is proved from the results that the trajectories of phaseplane for coupled ocean-atmosphere model ultimately tend tothe stable attractors separately.

A primary study of the correlation between the net air-sea heat flux and the interannual variation of western North Pacific tropical cyclone track and intensity

A singular value decomposition （SVD） analysis is carried out to reveal the relationship between the interannual variation of track and intensity of the western North Pacific tropical cyclones （WNPTCs） in the tropical cyclone （TC） active season （July–November） and the global net air-sea heat flux （Q net ） in the preceding season （April–June）. For this purpose, a tropical cyclone track and intensity function （TIF） is defined by a combination of accumulated cyclone energy （ACE） index and a cyclone track density function. The SVD analysis reveals that the first mode is responsible for the positive correlation between the upward heat flux in the tropical central Pacific and the increased activity of western North Pacific （WNP） TIF, the second mode for the positive correlation between the upward heat flux in the North Indian Ocean and the northeastward track shift of WNPTCs and the third mode for the negative correlation between the upward heat flux in mid-latitude central Pacific and the northwest displacement of the WNP TC-active center. This suggests that Q net anomalies in some key regions have a substantial remote impact on the WNP TC activity.

Design of a new dynamical core for global atmospheric models based on some efficient numerical methods

A careful study on the integral properties of the primitive hydrostatic balance equations for baroclinic atmosphere is carried out, and a new scheme todesign the global adiabatic model of atmospheric dynamics ispresented. This scheme includes a method of weighted equal-areamesh and a fully discrete finite difference method with quadraticand linear conservations for solving the primitive equationsystem. Using this scheme, we established a new dynamical corewith adjustable high resolution acceptable to the availablecomputer capability, which can be very stable without anyfiltering and smoothing. Especially, some important integralproperties are kept unchanged, such as the anti-symmetries of thehorizontal advection operators and the vertical convectionoperator, the mass conservation, the effective energy conservationunder the standard stratification approximation, and so on. Somenumerical tests on the new dynamical core, respectively regardingits global conservations and its integrated performances inclimatic modeling, incorporated with the physical packagesfrom the Community atmospheric Model Version 2.(CAM2. of NationalCenter for atmospheric Research (NCAR), are included.

A comparison analysis between developed and undeveloped depressions over the South china Sea

-- In this paper, by using two sets of composite data of developed and undeveloped depressions over the South china Sea, we analyze and compare the dynamic structures, the heating fields and the vorticity budget residuals of two different types of depressions. Our conclusions are as follows:The two types of depressions are similar in thermodynamical and dynamical structures. The main differ ences are : in the high layer of developed depression there is a divergence field, with a center near the zero line of vertical wind shear, and over undeveloped depression, the divergence field is weaker and the vertical wind at its center is greater than 5 m s-1. The thermodynamical field of the former is asymmetrical and that of the latter is quasi - symmetrical. As far as the dynamics structure is concerned, the convergence in the lower layer and the difference of divergence between the upper and lower layers of developed depression is three tmies larger than that of undeveloped depression. The upward motion and heating field at the center of developed depression is also stronger than that of undeveloped *** vorticity budget of the two types of depressions is mainly determined by the divergence term, the vorticity advection term and the vertical transport term. The residual term is also *** principal contribution comes from the divergence term . This is more significant for developed depression than for undeveloped depression.

A time-of-arrival(TOA) system based on GPS technology for locating VHF radiation sources from lightning has been developed and used in observation sites in the northern Shandong Province,*** 3D images of the lightning progression have been obtained successfully for the first time in *** 3D-channel evolutions of typical negative CG,positive CG and IC lightning flashes have been discussed together with the data of fast electric field *** was found that significant differences existed between the negative and positive CG lightning flashes in terms of the initiation and propagation of the radiation *** preliminary breakdown of a negative CG lightning flash propagated at a speed about 5.2.104 m/*** stepped leader of negative CG lightning flashes was trigged by negative initial ***,it propagated downward at a speed of 1.3×105 m/*** initial process of the positive CG lightning flashes was also a propagation process of negative *** streamers propagated dominantly horizontally in the positive charge region and accumulated positive charges at the origin of the lightning,and as a consequence,initiated downward positive streamers.A new type of lightning discharge that was triggered by a narrow bipolar pulse(NBP) is discussed in this *** NBP was originated at altitude of about 10.5 km in the upper positive charge *** a distinct difference from normal IC flash,its channels extended horizontally all around and produced a lot of radiation *** source power of the NBP could approach 16.7 kW,which is much greater than that of normal lightning discharge ranging between 100 mW and 500 *** 3D propagation of this new type of lightning discharge was observed and obtained for the first time in *** possible initiation mechanism of this new type of light-ning is discussed here.

Distributional features of δ^(18) O in precipitation in china

According to calculation on available data, higher δ18O exists in atmospheric precipitation of southeastern and northwestern part of china, and the lower in Northeast china and the southern QinghaiTibet Plateau. In china temperature effect appears mainly in the inner continent of midhigh latitudes and the amount effect appears in southeastern coastal regions, the YunnanGuizhou Plateau and QinghaiTibet Plateau where the influence of monsoon climate is obvious. The meteoric water lines (MWLs) of different regions are of certain divergence, which is closely related to the stable isotopic fractionations of the two processes, namely the evaporation of origins and the precipitating of vapor.

Atmosphere-ocean interaction and teleconnection in the Northern Pacific during the cold season

On the basis of the idea in our work (Jiang and Wallace, 1991) , the horizontal structure of SST pattern, the atmospheric response to SST change and the atmospheric forcing of the ocean in the Northern Pacific during the cold season are discussed. The results show that PNA pattern is the most prominent normal mode in the atmosphere-ocean interaction in the Northern Pacific during the cold season.
