Seven U-Th dates, 560 δ 18O data and microscopic sequences were measured for sta- lagmites from two high-altitude caves in Shennongjia area, Hubei Province. Variations of the de- cadal-resolution stalagmite δ 18O record from Swan Cave (1600 m elevation) reflect large spatial changes in circulation strength and precipitation of Asian monsoon. The evidence comes from a great similarity among the stalagmite δ 18O records from Nanjing, Jiangsu Province; Libo, guizhou Province and here studied area during the last deglaciation, including a part interval of Younger-Dryas event and Bolling-Allerod. A 30-year-resolution stalagmite δ 18O record from Yongxing Cave (1400 m eleva- tion), 70 km away from Swan Cave, reveals a rapid transition of Asian monsoon climate during Ter- mination 3 at about 2.5±5 kaBP. Based on 3 U-Th dates and about 5000 continuous annual bands, a millennial dry episode has been observed during Asian monsoonal Termination 3 from the Yongxing δ 18O profile. With respect to its structure, duration and transition, the dry reversal, as indicated by our stalagmite δ 18O record, generally agrees with the pattern of the YD event well-expressed in the Chi- nese stalagmite δ 18O records. This YD-type event is characterized by a large decrease in δ 18O value as much as 2.30‰, more than half of the δ 18O excursion between glacial/interglacial periods, and lasts 1371±59 a determined by the annual counting chronology. After this event, the monsoon climate shifted abruptly into the interglacial period within 74±4 a. Our data corroborate the view that the re- peated occurrence of YD-type event was not an “accident”, possibly resulted from the coupling of ice-sheet and oceanic/atmospheric circulations.

THE Zhen’ an-Xunyang (Zhen-Xun) Basin, located in the center of the Qinling Minor Plate in the Qinling orogen, develped and evoluted from the Devonian to the Triassic. The basin and its basement aresimilar to that of the southwestern part of the Yangtze Plate, where occur rich epithermal deposits. Thebasement of the basin is composed of the Proterozoic low-grade metamorphised volcanic and sedimentaryrocks, on which weakly metamorphised sedimentary and sedimentary rocks are deposited from the Cambrian to the Triassic. There occur three kinds of epithermal metal deposits: exhative-sedimentary-reformationtype Pb-Zn deposit (such as Xitonggou and Yuexi) ; reformation type Hg-Sb deposit (such as Dingjiashanand Shijiashan) ; sedimentary-reformation type Au deposit (such as Jinlongshan, Qiuling, Yaojie andJiashigou). The Au deposits are associated with minor Sb deposit. This contribution demonstrates onlythe essential natures of the epithermal gold mineralization.

Dong ethnic people have rich indigenous knowledge in terms of their daily life and production, which plays an important role in the sustainable development of their village. This paper aims to understand traditional knowledge of Dong ethnic people in resource management and population control, including traditional resource management, traditional medicinal knowledge and village regulations in Zhanli Village in Southeast guizhou Province. The research methods include key informant interview, group discussion, participant observation and secondary data collect- ing. The results show that Zhanli villagers try their best to utilize indigenous knowledge to manage the natural resources and keep the stable population to make themselves live in a sustainable way. Indigenous knowledge plays an important role in managing their limited natural resources and keeping the population stable under an excellent condition. Zhanli villagers employ indigenous knowledge to manage natural resources and use local herbs to control the population. Village regulation terms significantly influence villagers’ awareness in resource management and birth control. Women play the chief role in employing indigenous knowledge in weaving as well as medicinal knowledge in birth control, and these kinds of knowledge are passed down through the female line. However, the inheritance style of traditional knowledge is decreasing. Indig- enous knowledge plays an important role in the sustainable development of this village, which gives implications for development practices to involve indigenous knowledge to achieve sustainable development.

To investigate the characteristics of service value of the karst rocky desertification ecosystem,we take water conservation,soil conservation,carbon-fixation and oxygen-production,production of organic matter,and purification of atmospheric environment as function indicators,to conduct quantitative assessment and analysis of service function value of ecosystem in Bijie Yachi,Qingzhen Hongfenghu and Guanling-Zhenfeng Huajiang demonstration areas in guizhou Province,using remote sensing and field monitoring data in 2.06. The results show that the rate of contribution of water conservation,soil conservation,carbon-fixation and oxygen-production functions to regional service value is high ( 37. 05%,36. 68% and 2.. 15%,respectively) ; the rate of contribution of production of organic matter and purification of atmospheric environment functions to regional service value is low ( 2. 80% and 0. 32.,respectively) . The ranking of landscape in terms of service value per unit area is as follows: forestland ( 2..353 9 million yuan) > shrub land ( 10.630 1 million yuan) > grassland ( 5.036 7 million yuan) > dry land ( 3.381 2.million yuan) > farmland ( 2.508 8 million yuan) . The ranking of demonstration areas in terms of service value per unit area is as follows: Yachi Demonstration Area ( 12.44 million yuan) > Hongfenghu Demonstration Area ( 5. 91 million yuan) > Huajiang Demonstration Area ( 4. 4 million yuan) . It is negatively correlated with rocky desertification incidence within the region. The results also indicate that in the process of restoring and reconstructing the ecological environment in rocky desertification areas,increasing the area of forest vegetation,promoting the conversion of dry land and farmland into forestland, shrub land and grassland,will contribute to enhancement in ecological service value.

A large independent cadmium deposit has been found at Niujiaotang, Duyun, in recent years. To the bestof our knowledge this represents the first case of its kind in the world. With a reserve of over 5 000 tonsof cadmium, the deposit is unique in its high concentrations of cadmium which are tens of to over onehundred times higher than in ordinary cadmium mineralizations associated with Pb-Zn deposits. 1 Geological characteristics The Niujiaotang deposit is located at the southwest margin of the Yangtze Plate. The region consistsof a thick sedimentary cover ranging from Sinian to Triassic in age overlying unconformably the basementof Mid-Proterozoic metamorphosed volcanic-sedimentary rocks. Although many studies have investigated intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC),sample sizes in the reported studies are usually small and different in outcomes in different T and N subgroups are seldom ***,we evaluated the outcomes of NPC patients treated with IMRT and further explored treatment strategy to improve such *** collected clinical data of 865 NPC patients treated with IMRT alone or in combination with chemotherapy,and classified all cases into the following prognostic categories according to different TNM stages:early stage group (T1-2.0-1M0),advanced local disease group (T3-4N0-1M0),advanced nodal disease group (T1-2.2.3M0),and advanced locoregional disease group (T3-4N2.3M0).The 5-year overall survival (OS),local relapse-free survival (LRFS),and distant metastases-free survival (DMFS) were 83.0%,90.4%,and 84.0%,*** early disease group had the lowest treatment failure rate,with a 5-year OS of 95.6%.The advanced local disease group and advanced nodal disease group had similar failure pattern and treatment outcomes as well as similar hazard ratios for death (4.2.0 and 4.62.,respectively).The advanced locoregional disease group had the highest incidence of relapse and death,with a 5-year DMFS and OS of 62.3% and 62.2.,respectively,and a hazard ratio for death of *** with IMRT alone,IMRT in combination with chemotherapy provided no significant benefit to locoregionally advanced *** results suggest that the decision of treatment strategy for NPC patients should consider combinations of T and N stages,and that IMRT alone for early stage NPC patients can produce satisfactory ***,for advanced local,nodal,and locoregional disease groups,a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy is recommended.

Humans have relied on biomass for survival and development since the Stone Age. All aspects of human needs for materials are covered by tools, fuel, and buildings. Nowadays, metals and petroleum-based materials are widely used in highly developed industries. Unfortunately, environmental contamination and the loss of natural resources have led to the reemergence of biomass resources as efficient and sustainable energy sources. Notably, simple and direct applications can no longer meet the demand for functionalization, high performance of materials and construction materials. Therefore, it is imperative to modify biomass and combine its utilisation to produce functionalization and high performance materials. For example, construction materials with superior mechanical properties and water resistance can be produced by reinforcing fibres to facilitate crosslinking. Water-oil separation or adsorption effects of hydrogels and aerogels are determined by the porosity and lightness of biomass, biocomposite conductor is prepared by chimaeric conductive material. Here, we review the approaches that have been taken to devise an environmentally friendly yet fully recyclable and sustainable functionalised biocomposites from biomass and its potential directions for future research.

THE stable carbon isotopic composition of soil organic carbon is a powerful tool for discussing the source ofsoil CO2./sub> and the relationship of CO2./sub> source and sink between soil CO2./sub> and atmosphere CO2./sub> and has beenwidely studied. However, few similar researches have been done in karst area which comprises 15%global terrestrial area. Preliminary research results about the stable carbon isotopic composition of soil organic carbon in karst area are reported here. In April and August 1998, the samples were collected continuously at 5-cm intervals from 0 to -45cm depth in meadow soil profile described by Zheng and located in the Hongfong Lake area in the central guizhou Plateau which lies in the central East-Asia karst area.
