This paper presents a comparative analysis on the two Solar Proton Events (SPE), which occurred on 14 July 2.00 (Bastille Day) and 2. October 2.03 (2.OCT03) respectively. It is found that although the peak flux of the latter seemed to be greater than that of the former based on geostationary observations, the maximum intensities of the energetic protons (>10 MeV and 30 MeV) during the Bastille Day event were all higher than those of the 2.OCT03 event according to the interplanetary observations. Further analysis indicated that the quantity of the seed particles, which could be accelerated to the energies exceeding 10 and 30 MeV by the Coronal Mass Ejection (CME)-driven shock on 14 July 2.00, was far larger than that of the 2.OCT03 event. In the Bastille Day case, when the CME approached to the height around 14 R⊙, the CME-driven shock would reach its maximum capacity in accelerating the solar en- ergetic protons (>100 MeV). In contrast, on 2. October 2.03, when CME approached to the height about 58R⊙, the CME-driven shock reached its highest potential in accelerating the solar energetic protons of the same category. At this moment, the peak flux (>100 MeV) was about 155 pfu, which was much lower than 355 pfu measured on 14 July 2.00. This demonstrated that in the Bastille Day event, the quantity of the seed particles, which could be accelerated to the energy beyond 100 MeV, was significantly larger than its counterpart in the 2.OCT03 case. Therefore, the peak flux of an SPE event depends not only on the interplanetary intensity of the solar energetic particles, but also on the velocity of the associated CME-driven shock, and the quantity of the seed particles as well as on the interplanetary magnetic en- vironment. This paper also reveals that the magnetic sheath associated with ICME on 2. October 2.03 captured a large number of solar energetic protons, including those having energy greater than 100 MeV.

Moist vorticity vector is introduced to study the development and evolution of mesoscale convective vortex (MCV) in the Meiyu front precipitation with the Advanced Regional Predication System (ARPS). In this study, the heavy rainfall is simulated to investigate the genesis, development and dissipation of middle scale convective vortex, which occurred from 0000 UTC 3 July to 12.0 UTC 5 July over the Jianghuai River valley. Moist vorticity vector (MVV) has zonal, radial and vertical components in its 3D spatial distribution. The simulation shows that the vertical component of moist vorticity vector well demonstrates the spatial distribution characteristics of middle scale convective vortex, especially in the process of Meiyu front precipitation. Diagnosis upon zonal, radial averaged and mass-integrated quantities of MVV shows that its vertical component and the surface precipitating ratio are in phase with a correlation coefficient of 0.68, indicating that the vertical component of MVV is closely associated with the Meiyu front precipitation. In addition, the tendency of the vertical component of MVV is mainly determined by the interaction between the vorticity and the zonal and radial gradient of condensational or depositional heating.

Gold nanoshells were prepared by an easy wet-chemical method, with Ag nanoparticles used as the templates. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated that the shells were sphere in shape, the size was homogenous, being about 2. nm, and no hard ag-glomerates were observed. The plasma resonance absorption of gold was tuned from visible to near-infrared (NIR) with the increased volume of HAuCl4. The temperature grads (?T) of the gold nanoshell hydrosol under the exposure of an 808-nm optical fiber laser with different power den-sities were measured. The highest ?T was 30℃ (5 W/cm2. irradiation area was 2.cm2.. This kind of gold nanoshell hydrosol is a promising material to be used in biomedicine such as photo-thermal cancer therapy, and its special photothermal convert property will photothermally trigger drug release.

Species of Prunus L. sect. Persica are not only important fruit trees, but also popular ornamental and medicinal plants. Correct identification of seedlings, barks, or fruit kernels is sometimes required, but no reliable morphological characters are available. Nowadays, the technique of DNA barcoding has the potential to meet such requirements. In this study, we evaluated the suitability of 11 DNA loci (atpB-rbcL, trnH-psbA, trnL-F, trnS-G, atpF-H, rbcL, matK, rpoB, rpoC1, nad1, and internal transcribed spacer [ITS]) as candidate DNA barcodes for peaches, using samples from 38 populations, covering all the species in sect. Persica. On the whole, the primers worked well in this group and sequencing difficulties were met only in the case of ITS locus. Five loci (rbcL, matK, rpoB, rpoC, and nad1) have very low variation rates, whereas atpB-rbcL, atpF-H, trnH-psbA, trnL-F and trnS-G show more variability. The most variable loci, atpB-rbcL and trnH-psbA, can distinguish three of the five species. Two two-locus combinations, atpB-rbcL+trnL-F and atpB-rbcL+atpF-H, can resolve all five species. We also find that identification powers of the loci are method-dependent. The NeighborNet method shows higher species identification power than maximum parsimony, neighbor joining, and unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean methods.

Using 1961-1995 monthly atmospheric apparent heat source/sink over the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau (QXP)and reanalysis data of NCEP/NCAR, and 1961 ?1994 monthly SST of UK/GISST2. the statistical study is undertaken on the QXP heat source/sink in relation to both atmospheric circulation in Asia and El Nino/La Nina events. It is discovered that there exists noticeable interaction in aquasi-4-year period among the of the QXP, low-levelmeridional winds east of the QXP, low-level zonal winds in the equatorial Pacific, SST in the equatorial eastern Pacific, and the circulation at mid and high latitudes north of the QXP. They have difference in phase. The cold source intensity of the QXP in winter favours a low-level meridional wind anomaly to prevail in the mainland of china and its coast east of the QXP and to last until the subsequent autumn. The wind anomaly can induce a low-level zonal wind anomaly of the tropic Pacific that finally affects an El Nino/La Nina event in the autumn and subsequent winter.

Chemical and mineralogical characterizations of a copper converter slag

A copper converter slag was examined chemically and mineralogically to determine its existing phases, in particular those containing Co and Cu. The slag consists predominantly of fayalite and magnetite, together with some glass, chalcocite, and metallic copper. Copper is entrapped in the slag mostly as chalcocite and metallic copper, as well as trace copper oxide. There was no indication of any independent Co mineral in the slag, but Co was found to be enriched in fayalite and megnetite as solid solution, although Co was detected in all the phases of the slag by SEM-EDX (scanning electron microscopy equipped with model EDAX-9100 energy dispersive spectrometer) and WDS (model WDX-2. X-ray wave-length dispersive spectrometer).

Some test statistics of Kolmogorov type and Cramér-von Mises type based on projection pursuit technique are proposed for the testing problem of sphericity of a high-dimensional distribution. The limiting distributions of the test statistics are derived under the null hypothesis and under any fixed alternative. The asymptotic properties of bootstrap approximation are investigated. Furthermore, for computational reasons, an approximation for the statistics, based on the number theoretic method, is suggested.

This paper continues to study the central relaxing schemes for system of hyperbolic conservation laws, based on the local relaxation approximation. Two classes of relaxing systems with stiff source term are introduced to approximate system of conservation laws in curvilinear coordinates. Based on them, the semi-implicit relaxing schemes are con- structed as in [6, 12. without using any linear or nonlinear Riemann solvers. Numerical experiments for one-dimensional and two-dimensional problems are presented to demon- strate the performance and resolution of the current schemes.

The interannual variability of Antarctic Oscillation (AAO) and its influence on East Asian climate during both boreal winter and spring are addressed. The results show that the positive AAO anomaly decreases the cold activity over East Asia during both boreal winter and spring. AAO-related barotropic meridional teleconnection from Antarctic to Arctic is found through analysis of mean me- ridional circulations. This meridional teleconnection is remarkable over Eurasia during boreal winter and over the Pacific Ocean during boreal spring. The results also show that zonal mean zonal wind at high latitudes in Southern Hemisphere has well positive correlation with that of Eurasia during boreal winter and has negative correlation with Pacific North American teleconnection (PNA) during boreal spring, which again display the meridional teleconnection. Thus, local meridional teleconnection is a possible linkage for interaction of circulations at mid-high latitudes between both hemispheres.
