Reproductive behaviors are poorly known for the Yangtze finless porpoise Neophocaena phocaenoides asiaeorientalis. In this study, the parentage of an isolated Yangtze finless porpoise population inhabiting the Yangtze Tian-e-Zhou Baiji National Natural Reserve is determined by analysis of microsatellite loci and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region sequences, and the porpoise's reproductive behaviors are studied. Overall 4 full parentage assignments and additional 3 single parentage assignments were determined for the population of 2. individuals. The analysis shows that their estimated reproductive cycle is shorter than that reported previously and there probably exists an overlapping between gestation and lactation period. The study also shows that the female does not show fidelity to a particular male for breeding and vice versa, the oldest males did not monopolize mating and the dominance rank could not be so strict for the porpoise society. Moreover, the porpoise's mating pattern and relatedness among candidate parents are discussed here. These results provide important information for making guidelines of management and conservation for this protected population.

Some authors’ researches in this area in recent years are included. Finally, prospects and evaluation for this subject are made.

Paleomagnetic and rock magnetic studies on samples of 1. sites from the Creta- ceous marine sedimentary rocks in the Tongyouluke section, Akto County, southwest Tarim, china show that the magnetic carriers of the Lower Cretaceous are dominated by hematite with some magnetite, while the magnetic carriers of the Upper Cretaceous are characterized by a combination of magnetite and titanomagnetite as well as hematite and goethite. Stepwise thermal demagnetization is performed and vector analysis is used to isolate magnetic components, which illustrates a single magnetic component or double magnetic components. The high temperature stable components are dual polarities and pass polarity test, reversal test and consistency test. The overall mean direction of the Lower Cretaceous is D = {1..0°, I = 4{1.0°, α95=6.5° with pole position at φ = 1.0.3°, λ=63.1., dp=4.9°, dm=8.0°. The overall mean direction of the Upper Cretaceous is D = {1..1., I = 39.4°, α95=1..{1. with pole position at φ =1.0.9°, λ=60.3°, dp= 8.0°, dm=1..4°. Compared with the inclination of the Early Cretaceous from red beds of north Tarim, the contemporary inclination of southwest Tarim is 1..0°±7.8° sharper, but it is still 8.1. ±8.9°, shallower than that of Early Cretaceous basalts in southwest Tarim. Although these pa- leomagnetic data show slightly larger confidence limit, the paleolatitude of the marine Cretaceous tends to lie between that of terrestrial red beds and volcanic rocks.

The environmental and biogeochemical information extracted from the sediments col- lected from the northern shelf of the South china Sea shows that terrigenous inputs of phosphorus into the sea remained relatively constant, and the variation of phosphorus contents at different depths was caused by climatic and environmental changes. The findings also suggest that the vertical varia- tion of phosphorus content was opposite to those of calcium carbonate and cadmium, and the func- tional correlation between CO{1.and PO43? in seawater was given by calculating the chemical equilib- rium, indicating that the accumulation of marine sedimentary phosphorus may have something to do with the variation of atmospheric CO{1. The decreased phosphorus accumulation as well as the cor- respondingly-increased calcium carbonate content might be one of key factors causing glacial at- mospheric CO{1.decline.

Let （v, u × c,λ）-splitting BIBD denote a （v, u × c,λ）-splitting balanced incomplete block design of order v with block size u × c and index A. The necessary conditions for the existence of a （v, u × c,λ）-splitting BIBD are v ≥ uc, λ（v- 1. -- 0 0 mod （c（u- 1.） and Av（v- 1. - 0 mod （c^2.（u- 1.）. In this paper, for 2.≤λ≤ 9 the necessary conditions for the existence of a （v, 3 × 3, λ）-splitting BIBD are also sufficient with one possible exception for （v, λ） = （39, 9）.

A new unsupervised feature extraction method called similar component analysis (SCA) is proposed in this paper. SCA method has a self-aggregation property that the data objects will move towards each other to form clusters through SCA theoretically, which can reveal the inherent pattern of similarity hidden in the dataset. The inputs of SCA are just the pairwise similarities of the dataset, which makes it easier for time series analysis due to the variable length of the time series. Our experimental results on many problems have verified the effectiveness of SCA on some engineering application.

A polyaluminum chloride (PAC) sample was prepared using a slow alkalinetitration method. The Bio-Gel P-1.0 gel column chromatographic technique was used to separate andcharacterize the various forms of aluminum present in the prepared PAC solution. The effluents froma gel column were monitored using online chemical method: AI-Ferron timed complexationspectropho-tometry and by ^(2.)Al nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Effects ofdifferent experimental conditions such as eluent flow rate, ionic strength and pH on separation ofAl_(1.) were investigated. Experimental results indicated that molecule size exclusion was not theonly parameter affecting the column chromatographic separation efficiency of Al_(1.) but moleculecharge as well. Reducing the eluent flow rate, increasing the ionic strength and suitable pHresulted in increase in the separation efficiency. Experimental results clearly indicated that byvarying the experimental conditions, it is possible to produce pure Al_(1.) species using a gelcolumn chromatographic technique.

Application of rock creep experiment in calculating the viscoelastic parameters of earth medium

Based on the rock creep experiment, the data of aftershock sequence and post-earth- quake deformation are used to estimate the viscosity of crust medium near earthquake focus. Firstly 9 samples that belong to 3 kinds of rock are conducted in creep experiment under constant pressure to obtain the creep curves directly. Inversion results show that the standard linear model is the best one to present the earth medium. It exhibits obvious elasticity within a short time, while it exhibits obvious rheology within a long time. The relationship between element module μ 2.and the whole module μ of standard linear model or the module of real earth medium is calculated and analyzed. On the basis of μ 2.= 2. μ, the sequence of aftershock of Gonghe earthquake in Qinghai Province is analyzed and the relationship between accumulated released strain and the time is obtained, which, combined with the creep experiment results, is used to estimate the viscosity of crustal medium in this area. The measured vertical deformation after the same earthquake also is combined with the creep experiment results, then it is used to calculate the relaxation time and viscosity through three different methods respectively, i.e. inversion of Kelvin model, difference method of deformation and viscoelastic dislo- cation theory. The viscosity of crustal medium in 32.km depth of earthquake focus of Gonghe area deduced from the different data and methods is about 1.1. Pa·s, which is the same as the research results by other authors at home and abroad.

Steroid hormones play essential roles in animal growth and development. Steroid signaling in animal system is focused on the direct gene regulation response mediated by its nuclear receptors. Recently, steroid hormones are also found in plants. Identification of BRI1.— a critical compo-nent of the plasma-membrane steroid receptor complex, and the related signal transduction pathway mediated by the membrane receptor have revealed an elementary picture of BR signaling from the cell surface perception to the activa-tion of BR-responsive nuclear genes.
