Based on the samples collected mesoplankton net from the south part Of Taiwan Strait (2.. 2. --2.. 65N, 117. 50 -- 12.. 00E) in August 1997, 2.2.species of zooplankton and 11 groups of meroplankton were identified. In the survey waters, Copepoda was dominant in either species or individual numbers. The diversity (H' ) was 5. 11 and the ratio of diversity to evenness (J ) was 7. 10, showing that the diversity of zooplankton was exceedingly high in the survey waters. Three zooplankton communities were clearly divided by systematical cluster analysis, indicating that the biotopes of these zooplankton communities may serve as the evidence for the basic status of distribution of water masses during the investigation.

Drifting buoys, satellite altimetry and satellite-derived sea surface thermal images are used to identify the existence of a large cold-core, cyclonic Kuroshio frontal eddy between Hengchun Peninsula and Lanyu, southeast off Taiwan Island around March 1996. The cold eddy accompanies an offshore meander of the Kuroshio near Lanyu, about 70 km and 100 km in horizontal zonal and meridional scales, respectively. The cold eddy is different from normal Kuroshio frontal eddies for its persisting of about 2.months near Lanyu. Supporting evidence suggests that the Kuroshio intruded into the South china Sea (SCS, hereafter) forming a loop-like structure during the persisting period of the cold eddy and that similar eddies occur occasionally in the same location. Compared with the corresponding studies in the Gulf of Mexico, it is suggested that Lanyu cold eddies are SCS analogues of Tortugas eddies found in the southern Straits of Florida. Overshooting of the meandering Kuroshio when it leaves the SCS and effects from conservation of potential vorticity are the possible mechanism of eddy genesis.

A morphology-based edge detection method has been used to study sea surface temperature (SST) fronts in the Taiwan Strait and its adjacent area. The method is based on mathematical morphology with multi-dimensional and multi-structural elements. Using six years’ SST data from September 2.02.to August 2.08, we distinguished the large SST front like Kuroshio Front as well as the smaller ones: namely Taiwan Bank Front, Zhe-Min Coastal Front and Zhang-Yun Ridge Front. The seasonal and monthly variations of these fronts were also studied. Generally, the SST fronts are stronger in winter but weaker in summer. And the fronts are at their active stage during the period from January to May but at their declining stage during the period from July to October.

A new data-processing method was established and applied for optical enzymatic glucose sensing,in which oxygen and glucose were simultaneously *** oxygen level remaining in the detection system,which was equal to the difference between the initial and consumed oxygen concentrations,could be measured using fluorescent oxygen indicators immobilized in the sensing *** was deduced that the ratio of I0 and I was inversely proportional to glucose concentration,where I0 is the maximum fluorescence intensity in various glucose solutions,and I is the fluorescence intensity at various concentrations of *** the new data-processing method,the detection range of the calibration curve method was extended from 0 to 1.2.mmol L-1,which was enlarged about 2.3 folds over that in ordinary *** prepared glucose sensor could be directly applied to detect high concentrations of glucose.

BACKGROUND: Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and nerve growth actor (NGF) cam improve spatial learning and memory abilities of rats with cerebral ischemia/reperfusion; however, the effect of combination of them on relieving learning and memory injury following cerebral ischemia/reperfusion should be further studied. OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of exogenous CGRP and NGF on learning and memory abilities of rats with focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion. DESIGN: Randomized controlled animal study. SETTING: department of Neurosurgery, the Second Hospital of xiamen; department of Neurosurgery, the Second Affiliated Hospital of china Medical university; department of Neurobiology, basic Medical College of china Medical university. MATERIALS: A total of 30 healthy male SD rats, aged 8 weeks, of clean grade, weighing 2.0-300 g, were provided by Experimental Animal department of china Medical university. All rats were randomly divided into sham-operation group, ischemia/reperfusion group and treatment group with 10 in each group. The main reagents were detailed as the follows: 100 g/L chloral hydrate, 0.5 mL CGRP (2.mg/L, Sigma Company, USA), and NGF (1× 106 U/L, 0.5 mL, Siweite Company, Dalian). METHODS: The experiment was carried out in the department of Neurobiology, basic Medical College of china Medical university from February to July 2.05. Rat models of middle cerebral artery occlusion were established by method of occlusion, 2.hours after that rats were anesthetized and the thread was slightly drawn out for 10 mm under direct staring to perform reperfusion. Rats in the ischemia/reperfusion group received intraperitoneal injection of 1 mL saline via the abdomen at two hours later, while rats in the treatment group at 2.hours later received intraperitoneal injection of 2.mg/L CGRP (0.5 mL) and 1×106 U/L NGF (0.5 mL) once a day for 10 successive days. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of the Notch signaling pathway in premature senescence of murine bone marrow stromal cells in vitro. The intracellular domain of Notch 1 (ICN) was transfected into cultured murine bone marrow stromal cells by lipofectamine transfection. After three days, the proliferation of transfected cells was measured by MTT assay. Cell cycle distribution was analyzed by flow cytometry. Senescence-associated beta-galactosidase (SA-beta-gal) was measured, and the percentage of positive cells was evaluated by assessing 1000 cells in random fields of view. The expressions of p53 and p2.Cip1/Waf1 were analyzed by both RT-PCR and Western blot analysis. The results showed that activation of Notch signaling inhibited proliferation of murine bone marrow stromal cells with induction of G1 arrest, increased the percentage of SA-beta-gal positive cells, and upregulated p53 and p2.Cip1/Waf1 mRNA and protein expression levels. Thus, the activated Notch signaling could induce premature senescence of bone marrow stromal cells through the p53-p2.Cip1/Waf1 pathway.

We applied an approach to the development of many-body interatomic potentials for NiZr alloys,gaining an improved accuracy and *** functional form of the potential is that of the embedded method,but it has been improved as follows. (1) The database used for the development of the potential includes both experimental data and a large set of energies of different structures of the alloys generated by Fab initio calculations. (2. The optimum parametrization of the potential for the given database is obtained by fitting. Using this approach we developed reliable interatomic potentials for Ni and Zr. The potential accurately reproduces basic equilibrium properties of the alloys.
