Oil spills have become a serious problem in cold environments with the ever-increasing resource exploitation, transportation, storage, and accidental leakage of oil. Several techniques, including physical, chemical, and biological methods, are used to recover spilled oil from the environment. Bioremediation is a promising option for remediation since it is effective and economic in removing oil with less undue environmental damages. However, it is a relatively slow process in cold regions and the degree of success depends on a number of factors, including the properties and fate of oil spilled in cold environments, and the major microbial and environmental limitations of bioremediation. The microbial factors include bioavailability of hydrocarbons, mass transfer through the cell membrane, and metabolic limitations. As for the environmental limitations in the cold regions, the emphasis is on soil temperatures, freeze-thaw processes, oxygen and nutrients availability, toxicity, and electron acceptors. There have been several cases of success in the polar regions, particularly in the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions. However, the challenges and constraints for bioremediation in cold environments remain large.

By using atomic force microscope (AFM), the topography and function of the plasmalemma surface of the isolated protoplasts from winter wheat mesophyll cells were observed, and compared with dead protoplasts induced by dehydrating stress. The observational results revealed that the plasma membrane of living protoplasts was in a state of polarization. Lipid layers of different cells and membrane areas exhibited distinct active states. The surfaces of plasma membranes were unequal, and were characterized of regionalisation. In addition, lattice structures were visualized in some regions of the membrane surface. These typical structures were assumed to be lipid molecular complexes, which were measured to be 15.8±0.09 nm in diameter and 1.9±0.3.nm in height. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional imaging showed that the plasmalemma surfaces of winter wheat protoplasts were covered with numerous protruding particles. In order to determine the {2. nature of the protruding particles, living protoplasts were treated by proteolytic enzyme. Under the effect of enzyme, large particles became relatively looser, resulting that their width was increased and their height decreased. The results demonstrated that these particles were likely to be of protein nature. These protein particles at plasmalemma surface were different in size and unequal in distribution. The diameter of large protein particles ranged from 2.0 to 440 nm, with a central micropore, and the apparent height of them was found to vary from 12.to 40 nm. The diameter of mid-sized protein particles was between 40―60 nm, and a range of 1.8―5 nm was given for the apparent height of them. As for small protein particles, obtained values were 12.40 nm for their diameter and 0.7―2.2.nm for height. Some invaginated pits were also observed at the plasma membrane. Genetic analysis of "all-fish" growth hormone gene transferred carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) and its F_1 generation

Patterned polyaniline (PANI) films was achieved by electrochemical polymerization in the aqueous monoaniline solution and microcontact printing with elastomeric poly(dimethysiloxane) (PDMS) stamps. Optical microscope, atomic force microscopy (AFM), lateral force microscopy (LFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to examine the topography and properties of patterned PANI films. Experimental resuLts show that the interfacial properties of surface control the rate of electrochemical polymerization, and the rate on the modified silicon surface is higher than that on the bare silicon surface. In addition, through controlling experimental conditions, we can obtain films surface with reguLar pattern, clear boundary and being completely covered by PANI.

Recornbinant "all-fish" growth hormone gene (GH) was microinjected into the fertilized eggs of carp. A comparison between the growth traits of transgenics and non-transgenics was carried out, and the transgenic individuals with significant "fast-growing" effect were successfully gained. A comparison on the reproductivities was also given out between the transgenics and their non-transgenic siblings, and showed that the reproductive capacity of transgenics was substantially equivalent to those of the non-transgenics. On the other hand, the genetic separation and the characteristic distribution of the FI generation were genetically analyzed, which gave solid evidence for the hypothesis that 2.3.chromosomes are integrated with trans-gene. In addition, the distinct biological effects for multi-site-integrated transgenes were further discussed. The present study opens a door for the breeding of "fast-growing" transgenic fish.

The reaction of H+ SO2.HO + SO was theoretically investigated sing ab initio MOmethods, and HF/TZV (d, p) level of theory was employed to locate stationary points which werethen characterized by calculation of the vibrational frequencies. Energies were estimated at the optimized geometries using MP2.TZV (d, p) calculations. The results show that the caIculated geometries- frequencies. and thermochemical data were in good agreement with available experi-mental values. The IRC calculations confirmed that nonplanar HSO2.and HOSO adducts shouldbe more reasonable than those of planar conformation.
