Argon clusters subjected to intense femtosecond laser pulses are ionized by the optical fields and inelastic electron-ion collisions. The cluster plasmas absorb the laser energy through collisional inverse bremsstrahlung, leading the argon cluster plasmas to very hot states. The calculated electron temperature in the clusters indicates that the intense laser-cluster interactions are more energetic than interactions with molecules.

Transparent γ-LiAlO2.single crystal has been grown by Temperature Gradient technique. The surface of the wafer annealed in O2.atmosphere at 1100°C for 70 h became opaque and Li-poor phase (LiAl5O8); while, that annealed in Li-rich atmosphere kept transparent and smooth. The full-width at half maximum value dropped to 30 arcsecs when the wafer was annealed in Li-rich atmosphere. That annealed in O2.atmosphere increased to 78 arcsec. Compared with absorption spectra, we can conclude that the 196 nm absorption peak was caused by Li vacancies and the 736 nm peak was caused by O vacancies.

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease triggered by genetic, environment or other risk factors such as infection, drugs, stress, moisture, alcohol, and smoking. A major psoriasis susceptibility locus at 6p2..3 has been identified. Further studies found that HLA-DQA1*02.1 allele was associated with psoriasis. However, there were few data exploring an association between the environmental factors and susceptibility genes. In this study, the samples of 189 patients with psoriasis and 333 healthy controls were collected with their consent and were carried on analysis through polymerase chain reaction sequence-specific primer (PCR- SSP) method. The proportion of male psoriasis patients engaging in the smoking and alcohol was much higher than that of the control group (P2.1 allele was present at significantly higher frequency in the patients with psoriasis (OR=4.2., P2.1 in male patients with psoriasis (OR>6.91, P<1.0×10–4).

DNA barcoding is a molecular tool that uses a standardized DNA region to identify *** preliminary study reported here is the first attempt to specifically focus on universality and attributes of candidate barcodes across a wide systematic range of *** tested eight previously proposed plant barcoding regions(atpF-atpH, ITS2. matK, psbK-psbI, rbcL, rpoB, rpoC1, and trnH-psbA) and two popular phylogenetic markers(rps4 and trnL-trnF of cpDNA) in 49 moss species and 9 liverwort species, representing half of the orders in moss *** ITS2. rbcL, rpoC1, rps4, trnH-psbA and trnL-trnF regions showed good universality, and therefore the efficacy of these loci as DNA barcodes was further evaluated in 36 mosses and 2.liverworts, each of which included two to three individuals per *** five loci, ***, rpoC1, rps4, trnH-psbA and trnL-trnF, were easy to amplify and sequence and showed significant inter-specific genetic variability, making them potentially useful DNA barcodes for *** best performing single loci were the rbcL and rpoC1 coding *** loci showed equivalent performance and combinations of them did not greatly increase their discrimination *** addition, phylogenies generated from each of the separate regions and multi-locus combinations by using best-fit and Kimura 2.parameter models were compared, but no significant difference was found.

OsEBP-89 gene encodes an ethylene responsive element binding protein (EREBP) transcription factor from rice (Oryza sativa). Northern blot analysis revealed that OsEBP-89 was expressed in root, stem, seeds, flowers and leaves. Histochemical assay showed that β-glucuronidase (GUS) was expressed mainly in phloem of vascular tissues of the root and stem transition region (RST), basal part of sheath roots, stem node and basal part of adventitious roots, also in endosperm of seeds in transgenic rice harboring OsEBP-89/GUS construct (pNSG). A sequence region from -2.9 to -97 was found to play an important role for OsEBP-89 gene expression through promoter deletion assay. The possible function of OsEBP-89 gene was discussed.

The effects of Al additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of MoSi2.have been studied. With the A1 additions from 2.5 wt pct to 5 wt pct, the siliceous grain boundary phase in hot pressed samples was eliminated because of the formation of Al2.3 particles. It was shown that Al and SiO2.reacted at 860℃. During the reaction, A1 atoms were mainly transferred to Al2.3 particles, and to some extent, diffused into MoSi2.grains. Both the toughness and strength of Al containing composites exceeded those of pure MoSi2.material. Bending strength and fracture toughness reach the highest value of 350 MPa, 4.05 MPa.m1/2. respectively, at ambient temperature when Al addition was of 3.5 wt pct.

Apoptosis plays an important role in embryonic development, tissue remodeling, immune regulation and tumor regression. Two groups of molecules (Bcl-2.family and 'Death factor' family) are involved in regulating apoptosis. In order to know about the effect of Bcl-2.on apoptosis induced by Fas, a typical member of 'Death factor' family, the transfection experiments with expression vectors pcDNA3-fl and pcDNA3-bcl-2.were performed in BEL-7404 cells, a human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line which expresses endogenous Fas, but not FasL and Bcl-2. The data showed that the expression of FasL in pcDNA3-fl transfected hepatoma cells obviously induced the apoptosis of the cells. However, the overexpression of Bcl-2.in pcDNA3-bcl-2.transfected 7404/b-16 cells counteracted pcDNA3-fl transient transfection mediated apoptosis. Further study by cotransfection experiments indicated that Bid but not Bax (both were pro-apoptotic proteins of Bcl-2.family) blocked the inhibitory effect of Bcl-2.on Fas-mediated apoptosis. These results suggested that Fas-mediated apoptosis in human hepatoma cells is possibly regulated by Bcl-2.family proteins via mitochondria pathway.
