The mixture of Fe and Al powder was mechanically activated and sintered to study a non-melting methodof producing the intermetallics Fe3Al. High-energy ball milling was used as an activation method, X-ray diffractionand SEM were chosen to analyze the materials variation before and after activation and sintering, and hot press ofFe-Al powder was inveshgated to compare mechanical activation with sintering. The results show that combiningmechanical activation with reaction sintering can complete the transformation from pure Fe and Al powder to intermetallics. It is difficult to do the transformation by either mechanical activation or hot press.

Boron for aluminum substitution in the cordierite structure has been examined by sol-gel preparation of different samples along the compositional junction Mg2.l4-xBxSi5O18 with x=0,0.5,1,*** increasing the x value from 0 to 1.5 the crystallization behavior changed *** amount B2.3 doping can promote the sintering of amorphous cordierite gel,effectively restrain the precipitation of μ-cordierite and enhance the crystallization of α-*** substitution of B3＋ for Al3＋ in cordierite crystal structure can effectively improve the near-infrared spectral emissivity of this cordierite based glass-ceramics.

Based on the AVHRR pathfinder remote sensing data, soil moisture, precipitation and evaporation during the period of 1982.1998, soil moisture of all layers of soil-profile (0—1 m) in the Yellow River basin over the 17 years are calculated by the remote sensing model of calculating soil water. The Yellow River basin is divided into seven subcatchments as control sections at the location of six hydrologic stations (Lanzhou, Toudaoguai, Longmen, Sanmenxia, Huayuankou and Lijin). After calculating soil moisture and obtaining runoff data and precipitation data, the dynamical features of hydrological cycle in the Yellow River basin are analyzed for the period from 1982.to 1988 using water balance method. The conclusions are as follows: It is feasible to calculate the soil water on the macro-scale, in the soil profile with temporal continuity by means of remote sensing and survey in land. Some values of the key water cycle factors in the Yellow River are obtained, which include the annual precipitation of 4000 km3, the evapotranspiration of 3000-3500 km3, and the soil moisture transformation of ?500- 500 km3. Consequently, we analyzed the process of the water cycle in the Yellow River over the 17 years, and the results show that the segment upstream of Lanzhou city is a relatively humid region, and the area of internal waters and the reaches of Shanshan is the most desiccated region. Therefore, the runoff in the depth process is intensive and the runoff-generating process is weak in more arid regions.

The recent progress in inner surface hardening of tubes by plasma processing is summerized. Several techniques of inner surface plasma source ion implantation and deposition are introduced, and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. The basic principles, technical features and new progress of inner surface plasma source ion implantation methods for metal tubes, which were developed in our laboratory, are described in detail. And perspectives of the future technical development for inner surface ion implantation of tubes are presented.

By means of stress relaxation and strain-induced precipitation in deformed austenite, bainite with micron sheaves size was obtained in Nb-containing steel. Microstructures of deformed samples isothermally relaxed for various time followed by cooling in water were examined. Stress relaxation test and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were employed to detect precipitation of microalloy elements, such as Nb, Ti, during isothermal holding after deformation. All the samples were constituted by lath-like bainite along with acicular ferrite, but the size of bainitic sheaves and the amount of acicular ferrite were changed with relaxation time. To achieve optimum refinement, relaxation should be confined in the stage when the precipitates have sufficiently grown and started to coarsen. The sample having not undergone relaxation does not exhibit obvious refinement despite of its higher dislocation density. These results indicate that relaxation promotes bainite to refine, which is because deformed austenitic grains are divided by dislocation walls formed during relaxation and acicular ferrite formed before bainitic transformation.

The genetic algorithm has been widely used in many fields as an easy robust global search and optimization method. In this paper, a new generic algorithm based on niche technique and local search method is presented under the consideration of inadequacies of the simple genetic algorithm. In order to prove the adaptability and validity of the improved genetic algorithm, optimization problems of multimodal functions with equal peaks, unequal peaks and complicated peak distribution are discussed. The simulation results show that compared to other niching methods, this improved genetic algorithm has obvious potential on many respects, such as convergence speed, solution accuracy, ability of global optimization, etc.

The effect of relaxation after finished rolling on structures and properties of four microalloyed steel with different content of Nb and Ti was investigated. By alloy designing and control rolling + relaxation-precipitation-control phase trail storm ati on (RPC) process, a new 800 MPa grade HSLA plate steel could be obtained, the microstructure is composite ultra-fine lath bainite/martensite. The tempering process and mechanical properties of this kind of HSLA steel were investigated. The yield strength can achieve 800 MPa, and the ductility and impact toughness is satisfied.

The microstructure behavior and deformation mechanism of semi-solid 60Si2.n fabricated by electromagnetic stirring under different deformation conditions during thixoforming are studied by means of Gleeble-1500 thermal-strain-stress simulator. The micro- structure of deformed 60Si2.n and that of the non-deformed are compared. The results show that the grain size within deformation zone decreases as the amount of deformation increases or deformation temperature decreases, but deformation fate has small effect on grain size when the rate is very low. Besides, there is a critical amount of deformation to reduce grain size. These results offer theoretical and experimental basis for further producing semi-solid material with high melting temperature and direct forming of semi-solid slurry.

Based on the phase diagrams, measured activities and the annexationprinciple, calculating models of mass action concentrations for In-Bi-Cu and In-Sb-Cu melts havebeen formulated. Calculated results not only agree well with practical values, but also obey themass action law, showing that the deduced model can reflect the structural reality of given meltasand that the annexation principles is applicable to these tow ternary metallic melts. So long asthere is one from three binary systems constituting the ternary melts, in which the activities ofone component exhibit positive deviation relative to Raoultian behavior, heterogeous meltsinevitably would form, so heterogeneous calculating model should be used to calculate their massaction concentrations. On the contrary, if all the binary melts are homogeneous and their activitiesexhibit negative deviation with respect to the Raoult's law, then the ternary melts formed fromthem will certainly be homogeneous, hence single phase model should be applied.
