The　concentration　and　distribution　of　dimethyl　sulfide　in　the　marine　atmospheric　boundary　layer　near　the　equator

A one-dimensional photochemical model with parameterized vertical eddy diffusion is used to simulate the dimethyl sulfide (DMS) in the marine atmospheric boundary layer near the equator. The boundary condition of theDMS flux over sea surface is assigned from gas exchange models that deped on sea surface wind speed and DMS concentration in surface water. Photolysis rates at various altitudes are calculated as a function of Solar zenith angle, andthe radiation calculation includes ozone absorption,surface reflection and molecular *** simulated results of the DMS diurnal cycle are in good agreement with the observations. Sensitivity tests ofthe model indicate that the concentration of the DMS in the marine surface layer appears to be affected by a combination of chemical processes and meteorological conditions. In addition, photochemical processes are rather *** reaction of the DMS with OH radical, the heterogeneous conversion of SO2.and the deposition of NSS-SO andthe methanesulfonic acid (MSA) are critical factors of controlling the DMS, SO2. NSS-SO and the MSA concentrations and distributions in the *** DMS concentration in air is directly proportional to surface windspeed, but it is inversely proportional to boundary layer height in the convective boundary layer. The distributions ofthe DMS concentrations in air are strongly influenced by atmospheric stratification in stable conditions.

Aerosol indirect effects (AIEs) on global climate are quantitatively investigated by introducing aerosol-cloud interaction parameterizations for stratus clouds into an AGCM (BCCGCM2.0.1) developed by the National climate Center of the{2. coupling with the Canadian Aerosol Module (CAM). The study yields a global annual mean of -1.57 W m-2.for the first indirect radiative forcing. The second indirect effect leads to global annual mean changes in net shortwave flux of -0.58 W m-2.at the top of the atmosphere (TOA). The total AIE reduces the global annual means of net shortwave flux at the TOA and of surface temperature by 2.2. W m-2.and 0.12.K, respectively. Change in surface temperature induced by the total AIE is clearly larger in the Northern Hemisphere (-0.2. K) than in the Southern Hemisphere, where changes are negligible. The interhemispheric asymmetry in surface cooling results in significant differences in changes of the interhemispheric annual mean precipitation rate, which could lead to a tendency for the ITCZ to weaken and broaden. In summer, the northeasterly or northerly flows in most areas of east and south china and over the nearby oceans are enhanced due to the total AIE, which weakens the transport of warm and moist air carried by the East Asian summer monsoon, and decreases the summer monsoon precipitation in east and south china.

This paper describes an operational retrieval algorithm for the sand/dust storm （SDS） from FY-2./SVISSR （Stretched-Visible and Infrared Spin-Scan Radiometer） developed at the National Satellite meteorological Center （NSMC） of china. This algorithm, called Dust Retrieval Algorithm based on Geostationary Imager （DRAGI）, is based on the optical and radiative physical properties of SDS in mid-infrared and thermal infrared spectral regions as well as the observation of all bands in the geostationary imager, which include the Brightness Temperature Difference （BTD） in split window channels, Infrared Difference Dust Index （IDDI） and the ratio of middle infrared re?ectance to visible re?ectance. It also combines the visible and water vapor bands observation of the geostationary imager to identify the dust clouds from the surface targets and meteorological clouds. The output product is validated by and related to other dust aerosol observations such as the synoptic weather reports, surface visibility, aerosol optical depth （AOD） and ground-based PM10 observations. Using the SDS-IDD product and a data assimilation scheme, the dust forecast model CUACE/Dust achieved a substantial improvement to the SDS predictions in spring 2.06.

海南岛附近区域热带气旋低层风场的变化特征

利用1979~2.15年JTWC(Joint Typhoon Warning Center)最佳路径资料(2.01~2.15年资料用于台风风圈结构分析)及ERA-interim(0.5°×0.5°)再分析数据,统计分析我国海南岛附近区域(15.5°N^2..5°N,106°E^116°E)热带气旋(Tropical Cyclone,简称TC)低层风场的变化特征。结果表明:(1)年均5.5个TC于4~12.主要以西偏北路径进入该区域,其中海南岛东南侧海域TC出现频率最高且强TC比例最多,而岛西北区域出现频率最低,强TC比例最少。(2.TC中心位于海南岛不同方位时,其外围低层风场分布具有不同的非对称特征,且大风出现比率也各有差异;TC中心位于海南岛上时出现大风比率最高,位于岛南侧时次之,位于岛北侧时最小。(3.该区域TC平均最大风速半径(RMW)为58.3.km;TC位于岛上时RMW最大,而位于岛西南侧最小。(4)TC近中心最大风速由海上向陆地急剧减小,其高值中心主要位于雷州半岛东侧及西侧海域。(5)研究区域内TC的3.节风圈半径在TC环流的东侧大而西侧小,强TC大而弱TC小。(6)不同区域TC变形程度有所差异。平均而言,位于岛西南侧TC变形最大而位于岛东南侧时变形最小。

＜正＞A data assimilation system （DAS） was developed for the Chinese Unified Atmospheric Chemistry Environment-Dust （CUACE/Dust） forecast system and applied in the operational forecasts of sand and dust storm （SDS） in spring *** system is based on a three dimensional variational method （3.-Var） and uses extensively the measurements of surface visibility and dust loading retrieval from the Chinese geostationary satellite *** results show that a major improvement to the capability of CUACE/Dust in forecasting the short-term variability in the spatial distribution and intensity of dust concentrations has been achieved,especially in those areas far from the source *** seasonal mean Threat Score （TS） over the East Asia in spring 2.06 increased from 0.2. to 0.3. by using the data assimilation system, a 41% *** assimilation results usually agree with the dust loading retrieved from FY-2. and visibility distribution from surface {3. stations, which indicates that the 3.-Var method is very powerful for the unification of observation and numerical modeling results.

Temperature variations recovered from tree-rings in the middle Qilian Mountain over the last millennium

Based on the cross-dated tree-ring samples collected from the middle Qilian Moun- tain, a standard ring-width chronology had been developed, which covered the period AD 1000 to 2.00. The correlations between the chronology and climatic records from the nearby meteorological stations indicated that temperature was the dominant climatic factor for tree growth at upper timberline, and the most important climatic factor for the tree growth in the area was the mean temperature from previous December to current April. The temperature variations recovered from the ring-width data showed a cold period during the “Little Ice Age” and the con- tinuous warming during the twentieth century. Comparison between the ring-width chronology and δ18O records from the Dunde ice core in the Qilian Mountain indicated that there was a con- sistent trend in both time series. A significant correlation existed between our ring-width chro- nology and the Northern Hemispheric temperature, suggesting that the climate changes in the Qilian Mountain were not only driven by regional factors, but also responsive to the global cli- mate.
