A quasi-geostrophic wavelet-spectrum model of barotropic atmosphere has been constructed by wavelet-Galerkin method with the periodic orthogonal wavelet bases. In this study a wavelet grid-spectrum transform method is designed to decrease the tremendous computation of the nonlinear interaction term in the model, and a two-dimensional Helmholtz equation from the model in a wavelet spectrum form is derived, and a solution with high precision under the periodic boundary condition is obtained. The numerical investigation manifests that the wavelet-spectrum model (WSM) could keep on running for a long time under the forcing of heating and topography. Although its numerical solution is compatible with the grid model (GM), the WSM is of a higher precision and faster convergence rate than GM's. A stationary solution comes forth when the model is forced only by the surface heating, whereas a quasi-periodic oscillation with a period about 15 days appears as considering the topography in the model. The latter oscillation, to some extent, is very similar to the Rossby index cycle of atmosphere over middle and high latitudes.

Based on the developed Anderson and Moore's theory about cross-equatorial inertial jets and a nonlinear equivalence shallow water model, new universal functions are determined by the characters of the vortical large-scale air flow (atmosphere) or ocean current (ocean) related to the jet, then the potential vorticity and energy conservation equations along the streamline in the cross-equatorial in-ertial jets can be obtained. Because the governing equations are nonlinear, some limited multiple equi-libria of cross-equatorial inertial jets may exist. According to the character of large-scale air flow or ocean current outside the jets, the existent criterion for multiple eqnilibria in cross-equatorial inertial jets is discussed, and two examples for multiple equilibia of nonlinear governing equations are given.

Some depression cells with heights lower than their surrounding cells may often be found in Grid-based digital elevation models (DEM) dataset due to sampling *** depression-filling algorithm presented by Planchon and Darboux works very quickly compared to other published *** its simplicity and deli-cacy,this algorithm remains difficult to understand due to its three complex subroutines and its recursive *** fast algorithm is presented in this *** main idea of this new algorithm is as follows:first,the DEM dataset is viewed as an island and the outer space as an ocean;when the ocean level increases,the DEM cells on the island’s boundary will be inundated;when a cell is inundated for the first time,its elevation is increased to the ocean level at that moment;after the ocean has inun-dated the entire DEM,all of the depressions are *** depression-removing processing is performed using a priority ***,this new algorithm is a fast algorithm despite the fact that it runs more slowly than Planchon and Darboux’s *** time-complexity in both the worst case and in an average case is O(8nlog 2.(m)),which is close to O(n).The running speed of this algorithm depends mainly on the insertion operation of the priority *** shown by the tests,the depres-sion-filling effects of this algorithm are correct and valid,and the overall time consumption of this algorithm is less than twice the time consumed by Planchon & Darboux’s method for handling a DEM smaller than 2.00×2.00 *** importantly,this new algorithm is simpler and easier to understand than Planchon and Darboux’s method This advantage allows the correct program code to be written quickly.

The Middle Pliocene (ca 3.12.2.97 Ma) is a recent warm period in the Earth’s history. In many respects, the warmth of the Middle Pliocene is similar to the probable warm situation of the late 2.st century predicted by climate models. Understanding the Middle Pliocene climate is important in predicting the future climate with global warming. Here, we used the latest reconstructions for the Middle Pliocene—Pliocene Research Interpretation and Synoptic Mapping (PRISM) version 3—to simulate the Middle Pliocene climate with a fully coupled model Fast Ocean Atmosphere Model. From comparison of the results of simulations with reconstructions, we considered two important scientific topics of Middle Pliocene climate modeling: extreme warming in the subpolar North Atlantic and a permanent El Ni?o in the tropical Pacific. Our simulations illustrate that the global annual mean sea surface temperature (SST) in the Middle Pliocene was about 2.3°C higher than that in the pre-industrial era. The warming was stronger at midand high latitudes than at low latitudes. The simulated SST changes agree with SST reconstructions in PRISM3 data, especially for the North Atlantic, North Pacific and west coast of South America. However, there were still discrepancies between the simulation of the SST and reconstructions for the subpolar North Atlantic and tropical Pacific. In the case of the Atlantic, the weakened meridional overturning circulation in the simulation did not support the reconstruction of the extremely warm condition in the subpolar North Atlantic. In the case of the tropical Pacific, the whole ocean warmed, especially the eastern tropical Pacific, which did not support the permanent El Ni?o suggested by the reconstruction. From evaluation of the modeling and reconstruction, we suggest that the above discrepancies were due to uncertainties in reconstructions, difficulties in paleoclimate modeling and deficiencies of climate models. Based on Atmosphere-Vegetation Interaction Model (AVIM), the magnitude and spatial distribution of terrestrial net primary productivity (NPP) in china is simu-lated during three different geological eras, Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), Mid-Holocene (MH) and the present. The simulation shows that the glacial-interglacial variation of east {2.n summer monsoon in china is the key factor af-fecting the NPP change. During the three eras, mean NPPs are 2.8 g/m2.a, 409 g/m2.a, and 355 g/m2.a. The total NPPs are 2.05 Pg/a, 3.89 Pg/a and 3.33 Pg/a, respectively. The ter-restrial NPP in china during warm-humid climate is larger than that during cold-arid eras, and the correlation analysis between NPP and climate factors suggests that temperature is the primary factor affecting the terrestrial NPP during 2. kaBP (LGM), and for 6 kaBP (MH) and the present the pri-mary factor is precipitation.

Establishment of Statistical Model for Precipitation Prediction in the Flood Season in china

Inhomogeneities in the daily mean/maximum/minimum temperature （Tm/Tmax/Tmin） series from 1960-2.08 at 549 National Standard Stations （NSSs） in china were analyzed by using the Multiple Analysis of Series for Homogenization （MASH） software package. Typical biases in the dataset were illustrated via the cases of beijing （BJ）, Wutaishan （WT）, ürümqi （UR） and Henan （HN） stations. The homogenized dataset shows a mean warming trend of 0.2.1/0.193/0.344oC/decade for the annual series of Tm/Tmax/Tmin, slightly smaller than that of the original dataset by 0.006/0.009/0.007oC/decade. However, considerable differences between the adjusted and original datasets were found at the local scale. The adjusted Tmin series shows a significant warming trend almost everywhere for all seasons, while there are a number of stations with an insignificant trend in the original dataset. The adjusted Tm data exhibit significant warming trends annually as well as for the autumn and winter seasons in northern china, and cooling trends only for the summer in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and parts of central china and for the spring in southwestern china, while the original data show cooling trends at several stations for the annual and seasonal scales in the Qinghai, Shanxi, Hebei, and Xinjiang provinces. The adjusted Tmax data exhibit cooling trends for summers at a number of stations in the mid-lower reaches of the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers and for springs and winters at a few stations in southwestern china, while the original data show cooling trends at three/four stations for the annual/autumn periods in the Qinghai and Yunnan provinces. In general, the number of stations with a cooling trend was much smaller in the adjusted Tm and Tmax dataset than in the original dataset. The cooling trend for summers is mainly due to cooling in August. [Objective] The research aimed to establish the regression model which was used to predict the precipitation in the flood season in china.[Method] Based on statistical model,North Atlantic oscillation index and the sea surface temperature index in development and declining stages of ENSO were used to predict east {2.n summer monsoon *** the stations were divided into 16 zones,the same factors were used to establish the regression model predicting the station precipitation in the flood season in ***,it was compared with the model that predicted firstly the monsoon index and estimated the precipitation.[Result] The prediction results of summer precipitation during 2.05-2.09 by every model were *** was found that the model that the factor predicted indirectly the regional precipitation was better than that predicted indirectly the station ***,the model that the factor predicted directly the regional precipitation was better than that predicted indirectly the regional *** prediction score P of optimum model that three factors predicted directly the regional precipitation reached averagely 74.2.and the anomaly correlation coefficient ACC was averagely *** from the comparison situation of positive and negative zone distribution of precipitation anomaly percentage between the predicted and observed values in 5 years,the prediction effects in the south and east of Northeast china,some areas in the south of Yangtze River,the coast of South china and most areas of Xinjiang were *** predicted positive/negative distribution of precipitation anomaly percentage tallied with that of observation.[Conclusion] The model could predict well summer precipitation in china.
