Daily observations of wind speed at 12.stations in the Greater beijing Area during 1960-2.08 were homogenized using the Multiple Analysis of Series for Homogenization *** linear trends in the regional mean annual and seasonal(winter,spring,summer and autumn) wind speed series were -0.2.,-0.39,-0.30,-0.12.and -0.2. m s 10yr,*** showed the greatest magnitude in declining wind speed,followed by spring,autumn and *** annual and seasonal frequencies of wind speed extremes(days) also decreased,more prominently for winter than for the other *** declining trends in wind speed and extremes were formed mainly by some rapid declines during the 1970s and *** maximum declining trend in wind speed occurred at Chaoyang(CY),a station within the central business district(CBD) of beijing with the highest level of *** declining trends were in general smaller in magnitude away from the city center,except for the winter case in which the maximum declining trend shifted northeastward to rural Miyun(MY).The influence of urbanization on the annual wind speed was estimated to be about -0.05 m s(10 yr) during 1960-2.08,accounting for around one fifth of the regional mean declining *** annual and seasonal geostrophic wind speeds around beijing,based on daily mean sea level pressure (MSLP) from the ERA-40 reanalysis dataset,also exhibited decreasing trends,coincident with the results from site observations.A comparative analysis of the MSLP fields between 1966-1975 and 1992.2.01 suggested that the influences of both the winter and summer monsoons on beijing were weaker in the more recent of the two *** is suggested that the bulk of wind in beijing is influenced considerably by urbanization,while changes in strong winds or wind speed extremes are prone to large-scale climate change in the region.

PM10 and size-resolved (9-stage) aerosol samples in the urban air of Xi’an, china were collected during the spring of 2.09 including a massive dust storm occurring on April 2.th and measured for inorganic ions, water-soluble organic (WSOC) and inorganic carbon (WSIC), water-soluble organic nitrogen (WSON), EC and OC. Characteristics of chemical compositions and size-distributions of those measured species in the urban samples were investigated and further compared with those simultaneously observed on the mountaintop of Mt. Hua, which is located about 150 km east to the city, to recognize the impact of dust storm on aerosol chemistry of the downwind region. PM10 in Xi’an during the non-dust storm period ranged from 58-42. g m-3 (2.7±79 g m-3), and sharply increased to a 3-hr maximum of 890 g m-3 (av. 589±2.3 g m-3) on the dust storm day (April 2.th). Mass-closure study results showed that during the non-dust storm period organic matters accounted for 2.% of the PM10 particle mass, followed by SO42. (13%), NO3- (10%), water-soluble carbonate (10%), EC (5%), NH4+ (4%), and other ions (7%). In contrast, water-soluble carbonate became the most abundant among the measured species during the dust storm period, accounting for 12. of the PM10 mass, followed by organic matters (11%), SO42. (3%), Ca2.(2.) and NO3- (1.5%). Such a changes in chemical compositions suggests a significant heterogeneous reaction of acidic gases (e.g., H2.O4, HNO3, SO2.and N2.5) with dust to form water-soluble mineral compounds. A bimodal size distribution of particles was observed during the non-dust time with two equivalent peaks in the fine (2.1 m) and coarse (>2.1 m) ranges, in contrast to a unimodal pattern (i.e., coarse mode) observed on the dusty day. All the measured ions except NH4+ significant shifted toward larger particles during the dust storm time. Similar size-distribution patterns of particles were found on the mountaintop of Mt. Visual range （VR） data from 1981 to 2.05 are examined for 2. meteorological monitoring sites in the Yangtze River Delta Region （YRDR） of china. Cumulative percentile analysis was used to construct VR trend. The 2.-year average domain average 50% VR was about 2..9 ± 1.9 km. Domain average 50% VR decreased from 1981 to 2.05 with a trend of -2.41 km /decade. The worst 2.%, 50% and best 2.% VR and variation rates for the 2. sites are analyzed. The 50% VR of the town, county-level city and prefecture-level city sites are 2..1 km, 2..5 km and 19.4 km, respectively. The best 2.% VR decreased fastest with the rate -3.5 km/decade. regional median VR decreased from the coastal sites to the inland sites. Ridit analysis and cumulative percentile have been adopted to study the VR variation properties between economically developed areas （e.g., Nanjing and Hangzhou） and remote areas （e.g., Lvsi）. The two analyses both show that VR decreased in Nanjing and Hangzhou while remained constant in Lvsi from 1981 to 2.05.

A severe mud rain event was recorded on April 15-16, 1998 over beijing, resulting in a layer of mud mixed with dirty pollutants in its urban area. It was estimated at 2.million US dollars to clear the dirt. That event was extremely severe in that decade, covering an extensive area, lasting for a prolonged time, and carrying with it a considerable amount of sands to the Pacific and even North America, as displayed on satellite images. The 3D regional Eulerian long-distance transfer model coupled with the model for {2.-asian yellow-sands raising is used to simulate the intense event of mud rain in beijing and its vicinity in April of 1998, with 9-category scales and their microphysics included therein. The needed meteorological conditions are furnished by the MM5. Evidence suggests that the Eulerian model combined with the {2. asian model allows to forecast the concentration and scale spectrum of sands during their lifting, diffusing and clearing, leading to observations in close agreement with simulations;the transfer is seen both close to ground and at the middle troposphere;the long-distance transport and light rain act as the cause of mud rain;the mud rain in north china results from cloud physics and rain mixed with sands (especially2.m in diameter) from the Loess Tableland.
