Little information is available on the interactive effects of inorganic and organic pollutants on carbon utilization by soil *** study examined the effects of two common soil pollutants,lead(Pb) and bensulfuron-methyl herbicide(BSM),on decomposition of an adscititious carbon source(14C-glucose).Two contrasting paddy soils,a silty clay soil and a clay loam soil,were incubated with different concentrations and combinations of pollutants for 60 *** rotatable central composite design was adopted to design the combinations of the pollutant concentrations so that rate response curves could be *** decomposition of 14C-glucose occurred in the first three days for both soils where no Pb or BSM was added(control).Overall,63%-64% of the added 14C-glucose was decomposed in the control over the 60-day *** addition of Pb or BSM significantly decreased the decomposition of 14C-glucose during the first week but increased the decomposition thereafter;as a result,the percentages of 14C-glucose decomposed(57%-77%) over the 60-day period were similar to or higher than those of the *** of the pollutants in combination did not further inhibit decomposition compared with the ***,decomposition rates were lower in the silty clay soil than in the clay loam soil,which was related to the soil texture,cation exchange capacity,and *** relationship between the decomposition rates and the pollutants could be well characterized by the quadratic regression orthogonal rotation *** initial antagonistic effects of the pollutants followed by the synergistic effects on microbial activity might result from changes of the concentrations of the pollutants.

It has been generally recognized that strategic environmental assessment integrates environment and development into decision-making and becomes an important decision-making tool for implementing sustainable development. This paper firstly introduces the relationships of SEA, public participation(PP)and information publicity(IP),then discusses the {2. parts in enforcing the effective process of PP: They are the methods for how to make sufficient information open (What), when to implement PP (When), who will determinate the public (Who), and how to make the models of PP (How). Six cases are compared and analyzed. At last, ways to improve the effectiveness of PP in china is also presented.

By integrating forest inventory data with remotely sensed data, new data layers for factors that affect forest fire potentials were generated for Baihe Forestry Bureau in Jilin Province of china. The principle component analysis was used to sort out the relationships between forest fire potentials and environmental factors. The classifications of these factors were performed with GIS, generating three maps: a fuel-based fire risk map, a topography-based fire risk map, and an anthropogenic-factor fire risk map. These three maps were then synthesized to generate the final fire risk map. The linear regression method was used to analyze the relationship between an area-weighted value of forest fire risks and the frequency of historical forest fires at each forest farm. The results showed that the most important factor contributing to forest fire ignition was topography, followed by anthropogenic factors.

The geometric features and the distribution properties of pores in rocks were in- vestigated by means of CT scanning tests of sandstones. The centroidal coordi- nates of pores, the statistic characterristics of pore distance, quantity, size and their probability density functions were formulated in this paper. The Monte Carlo method and the random number generating algorithm were employed to generate two series of random numbers with the desired statistic characteristics and prob- ability density functions upon which the random distribution of pore position, dis- tance and quantity were determined. A three-dimensional porous structural model of sandstone was constructed based on the FLAC3D program and the information of the pore position and distribution that the series of random numbers defined. On the basis of modelling, the Brazil split tests of rock discs were carried out to ex- amine the stress distribution, the pattern of element failure and the inosculation of failed elements. The simulation indicated that the proposed model was consistent with the realistic porous structure of rock in terms of their statistic properties of pores and geometric similarity. The built-up model disclosed the influence of pores on the stress distribution, failure mode of material elements and the inosculation of failed elements.

Texture and shape analysis offer interesting possibilities to characterize the structural heterogeneity of classes in the high spatial resolution satellite imagery. In this paper, texture features are generated based on the Gaussian Markov random field (GMRF) model, and shape features are measured using geometric moments. Then feature selection is implemented according to the class separability. To reduce the border blurring effect introduced by texture features, the unsupervised classification algorithm involved ordered procedures is proposed, in which linear objects are extracted using spectral and shape features firstly, then other objects are detected using the combination of spectral, texture, and shape features. The proposed classification method is implemented using QuickBird imagery. For comparison, the standard K-means method with spectral data is used as a benchmark. The experimental results show that the ordered classification method with the combination of spectral, texture, and shape information performed better than conventional methods.

Cenozoic sediments in the foreland basin——Jiuquan Basin in west Hexi Corridor recorded tectonic uplift information of the Qilian Mountains. High resolution paleomagnetic dating of the Laojunmiao （LJM） section across the central LJM anticline in the southern Jiuquan Basin reveals ages of the Getanggou Member, Niugetao Member in the Shulehe Formation, the Yumen Conglomerate, Jiuquan Conglomerate and Gobi Formation at >13―8.3 Ma, 8.3―4.9 Ma, 3.66― 0.93 Ma, 0.84―0.14 Ma and 0.14―0 Ma, respectively. Sedimentary evolution study suggests that the Qilian Mountains should begin to rise gradually since8―6.6 Ma, accompanied by sedimentary environments changing from lacustrine mudstones-sandstones to alluvial conglom- erates. Rapid uplift of the Qilian Mountains began at3.66 Ma, followed by a series of stepwise or intermittent intensive uplifts at about 2. Ma, 0.93―0.84 Ma and 0.14 Ma, which finally resulted in the present high Qilian Mountains.
