Reconstructing mean maximum temperature of growing season from the maximum density of the Schrenk Spruce in Yili,Xinjiang,China

To study the historical temperature variation in Yili of Xinjiang,the tree-ring chronologies of maximum density(MXD) and tree-ring width(TRW) were established with the Schrenk Spruce(Picea schrenkiana *** Mey) collected from six sites to analyze the characteristics and ability of response to climate *** results suggest that the MXD chronology of the Schrenk Spruce from different sampling sites responded to climate change well and were positively correlated with the mean maximum temperature and the mean temperature from April to August in the study *** mean maximum temperature anomaly from April to August,spanning the years from 1848 to 2.00,was reconstructed by three MXD chronologies which were selected by stepwise *** reconstructed function was stable and explained 56.2. of the *** reconstructed results indicated a cold span of 153 years in spring and summer from the beginning of the 1950s to the beginning of the 1970s in the Yili *** strongly increasing tendency was detected in the mean maximum temperature anomaly from April to August during this reconstructed period.

Studies of in taxonomy,phylogeny, biogeography, and other aspects regarding these mammals are carred on actively in this country. This contribution aims to briefly summarise and update the mammal ages for the chinese Cenozoic records.

As one of the earliest species used in dendrochronological studies, Larix responds sensitively to climate change. In this study, nine larch species and one variety from eleven sites were collected to study the growth characteristics of tree-ring width using dendrochronological methods. Ten residual tree-ring chronologies were developed to analyze their relationships with regional standardized anomaly series by Pearson’s correlation analysis. The results suggest that most of the chronologies had significantly positive correlations with the mean temperature and mean maximum temperature in May. The spring temperature evidently limited the radial growth of the larch species without precipitation control. The largest mean tree-ring width was found in Himalayan Larch in Jilong, whereas Master Larch in Si’er reflected the smallest mean value. Both species presented little climate information in this study. chinese, Potanin, and Tibetan larches are significantly correlated with climate change, implying a huge potential for climate history reconstruction. The elevation of the sampling sites appears to be an important condition for tree-ring growth of larches responding to climate factors.

SOME REMARKS ON CHENJIAWO FAUNA──On the First Appearance of Peking Man Fauna

The Chenjiawo fauna includes two stratigraphically distinct groups of mammalian fossils, 14 species of mammals and 4 stratigraphic horizons. They are L5, L6, S6 and L8-S9, representing a wide temporal distribution. The first appearance of Peking Man fauna can be correlated with Event 9 in America and Europe (Repenning, 1987) and is marked by the lowest stratigraphic occurrence of Cricetinus varians (LSD ). In northern Europe, Event 9 is believed to have taken place near the end of the Saale glaciation about 500 000 years ago (Bonifay, 1990). Therefore the geological age of the Chenjiawo fauna is between 500 000-1000 000 years B. P., corresponding to oxygen isotope. Stages 14-2.. Through the correlation between the solid earth, atmosphere,hydrosphere, and biosphere, the boundary between the Upper and Lower Lishi Formation should be moved to the S4/L5 boundary.

Two new species of Vestrogothia (Phosphatocopina, Crustacea) of Orsten-type preservation from the Upper Cambrian in western Hunan, South China

Although fossils of Orsten-type preservation represented by Skaracarida and Phosphatocopina were first reported from the Middle and Upper Cambrian in western Hunan, South China in 2.05, diversified phosphatocopine species have never been appropriately described and elucidated in terms of their evolutionary relationships. Here, we described two new species of Phosphatocopina, Vestrogothia anterispinata sp. nov. and V. bispinata sp. nov. The evolutionary relationship among all the valid species of Phosphatocopina is discussed and the phylogeny of Phosphatocopina is reestablished using cladistic analysis. Accordingly, phosphatocopines primitively evolved along two lineages: one evolved towards the emergence of lobes; the other evolved towards the emergence of dorsal spines. Respectively, lobes originated independently three times, and dorsal spines originated only once. With regard to the dorsal rims, interdorsum originated first, whereas dorsal furrow originated independently twice on the basis of interdorsum. Probably Hesslandona may represent a polyphyletic group, whereas Vestrogothia a monophyletic group.

Earliest Asian discoglossid frog from western Liaoning

Based on a superbly preserved skeleton, a new anuran taxon has been named and described from the Yixian Formation (Upper Jurassic/Lower Cretaceous), Liaoning Province,northeastern China. This discovery documents the first discoglossid fossil from China, the earliest record of the group in Asia, and the only second Mesozoic discoglossid known from fully articulated material in the world. The family Discoglossidae is widely perceived as a primitive anuran group, but has no definite fossils found in collaboration with their recent distribution in *** new discovery from Liaoning extends the temporal range of the group in Asia back at least 12. million years, and provides valuable fossil material for study of anatomical details of early discoglossids, as well as of historical distribution of this primitive anuran group.

A NEW ZHELESTID (MIXOTHERIDIA, MAMMALIA) FROM THE PALEOCENE OF QIANSHAN, ANHUI

During the fieldwork in the past several years, a great number of Paleocene mammals were collected from Qianshan Basin in Anhui Province. Of all the mammalian fossils recovered in recent years, only some of a few taxa, e.g. Anagalidae and Pantodonta, have been described (Hu, 1993; Wang, 1993; Wang et al., 1992..Here described specimens, a pair of lower jaws and two fragments of one left maxilla of the same individual, were found from the lower part of Upper Member of Wanghudun Formation (Middle Paleocene) in the summer of 1993 and probably represent a mixotheridian.

A LATE MESOZOIC BIRD FROM INNER MONGOLIA

A new fossil bird (Otogornis genghisi gen. et sp. nov.) is introduced on the basis of the description of the pectoral girdle and wing bones of a skeleton from Lower Cretaceous of Inner Mongolia, China. The specimen was collected by a field team of the Sino-Canadian Dinosaur Expedition. It was preserved in the grey-green mudstones of the Yijinhuoluo Formation in Otogqi. This bird represents the earliest records of avian fossil in China.

This paper briefly reviews the Triassic marine reptile fossils in Guizhou Province, especially the fossils that have been recently found in the Guanling area. Based on three sections at Guanling and Xingyi, Guizhou Province and Luoping, Yunnan Province, four horizons with vertebrate fossils are recognized in the Middle and Upper Triassic of this area; They are from bottom to top: Member I and Member II of the Guanling Formation, and the Zhuganpo Member and the Wayao Member of the Falang Formation.

A high-resolution late Pleistocene record of pollen vegetation and climate change from Jingning, NW China

With the support of 18 AMS-14C data, a high-resolution pollen record from the Suancigou section at Jingning, Gansu Province was established. Our results showed that the vegetation ex-perienced a series of changes characterized by the alternative growth and decline of forest and steppe components during the period from 44.2.to 11 ka B.P. in the Jingning area. Over the period of 44―2. ka B.P. (MIS3), coniferous forests were flourishing, indicating a humid climate with the tem-perature being lower than that of the present. Since 2. ka B.P., the vegetation was dominated by steppe-desert steppe under a cold and dry condition, and entered the Last Glacial Maximum domi-nated by desert steppe. Several periods of the marked decrease in the arborous pollen content in Suancigou well corresponded to the North Atlantic Heinrich events, especially to Heinrich event 3, further supporting that the Heinrich events were well reflected by the pollen record in the Loess Pla-teau as well.
