Magnetic properties of Jiaxian red clay sequences from northern chinese Loess Plateau and its paleoclimatic significance

Detailed rock magnetism investigation of the Jiaxian red clay sequences indicated that there are common magnetic mineralogy properties in red clay and loess-paleosol sequences from the chinese Loess Plateau as well as the marked properties of themselves, magnetic min-erals mainly with magnetite, maghemite, hematite, and possibly limonite/goethite contributing to the magnetic behavior. Meanwhile, it is found that the strong paleosol in red clay sequences has a lower coercivity and higher content of ultra-fine ferrimagnetic grains than that of the weak pa-leosol, which is similar to loess and paleosol in upper Wucheng Loess sequences, and indicates that humid conditions and relatively strong pedogenesis play a significant role in the increase of ultra-fine magnetic minerals and transformation of the magnetic minerals. This suggests that, like Quaternary loess-paleosols, the change of characteristics of paleoclimatic conditions of the late Tertiary red clay deposits is fluctuant. In addition, the results of magnetic hysteresis properties show that the applied saturated field for samples from the Jiaxian red clay sequences is higher than that of the samples from eastern and southern chinese Loess Plateau. It is obviously shown that there exist more hard magnetic minerals and relatively weak biochemical processes in the Jiaxian red clay sequences on northern chinese Loess Plateau. We conclude that the paleocli-matic environment is different between northern and eastern/southern chinese Loess Plateau, and it should be more arid in northern chinese Loess Plateau.

Evaluation criteria for gas source rocks of marine carbonate in china

Hydrocarbon generating and expulsion simulation experiments are carried out using samples artifically matched between the acid-dissolved residue of relatively low-maturity limestone and the original sample. This work makes up for the insufficiency of source rock samples with high abundance of organic matters and low maturity in china. The organic carbon content of the 10 prepared samples varies between 0.15% and 0.74%. Pyrolysis data and simulation experiment results of hydrocarbon generating and expulsion, which were obtained by a high-temperature and high-pressure open system, indicate that the lower limit of organic carbon content for marine carbonate rock to generate and expel hydrocarbons is 0.2.%—0.31%. In combination with the numerical analysis of organic carbon in marine carbonate rocks from Tarim Basin, Sichuan Basin, Ordos Basin and North china, as well as the contribution of these gas source rocks to the discovered gas pools, we think that the organic carbon criterion for carbonate gas source rocks should be 0.3%.

The Juancheng chondrite, a new meteorite falling recently in Juancheng County, Shandong Province, china, is classified as an H5 (S2. chondrite based on the compositions of olivine (Fa= 19.2. σ Fa=0.46) and low-Ca pyroxene (Fs=16.9, σ Fa=0.4). The plagioclase in the Juancheng chondrite is rich in CaO, indicating a relatively high metamorphic temperature the parent body underwent.

Variation of the Fe/Mn ratio of ferromanganese crusts from the Central North Pacific: implication for paleoclimate changes

Contents of Fe, Mn and other elements in four ferromanganese crusts recovered from the central North Pacific are analyzed at high depth-resolution by electron microprobe for reconstructing factors controlling their deposition. Manganese (IV) in hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts is mainly supplied as colloidal precipitates from the Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ), which concentrates high amounts of dissolved Mn (II). The iron is derived from carbonate dissolution and silicate particles of eolian dust. An increase in paleoproductivity during cooler climate would potentially lead to a decrease in Mn deposition due to enlargement of the OMZ which has a “temporary storage” effect for Mn. On the other hand, not affected by the OMZ, the iron entering the Fe-Mn crust would likely increase with the eolian dust input and surface productivity at glacial stages. As a result, the increasing Fe/Mn ratio should indicate a cooling climate. This is supported by the following observations. In the profile of the past 1 Ma, the variations of Fe/Mn ratio coincide with benthic oxygen isotope fluctuation in glacial-interglacial cycles. Three episodes with high Fe/Mn ratios, approximately at 2.6, 1.8 and 0.8 Ma, are detected within the past 3 Ma and coincide with major climate transitions and cooling events. The secular evolution pattern of Fe/Mn ratio in the Cenozoic is similar to the Pb isotope evolution which is mainly controlled by eolian dust and related to climate. The Fe/Mn evolution pattern is also broadly consistent with the global deep-sea oxygen isotope records. Therefore, Fe/Mn ratio recorded in the ferromanganese crusts may be a new proxy for climate change.

THE altered deformation zone type Au (Ag) deposits share an important part from the precious metallicore deposits in the Yunkai area, South china. Their formation is a history of poly-stage evolution. Pre- liminary source strata, Calidoniam metamorphism, Indosinian-Yanshanian ductile shear deformation andassociated hydrotheraml alteration all play certain roles in the history. This note discusses the geochemical conditional of the hydrothermal fluids during mineralization. Two representative ore deposits, the Pangxidong Ag(Au) deposit and Hetai Au deposits are selectedfor this study. They are hosted in altered ductile shear zones. Wall-rock hydrothermal alteration is bothspatially and temporally associated with the development of the ductile shear system. Silicification occurred throughout the whole alteration process. The continental volcanic rocks and volcaniclas-tic sedimentary conglomerates of the Cangshuipu Formation occur well in Yiyang of Hunan Province, consisting of a wedge-shaped succession of Neoproterozoic strata that over-lie with high-angle unconformity the flysch turbidites of the Lengjiaxi Group in the Upper Mesoproterozoic Eonothem. SHRIMP zircon U-Pb dating gives a weighted mean age of 814 12.Ma for the dacitic volcanic agglomerates from the lowest part of the volcanic rocks in the Cangshuipu Forma-tion. This age is younger than previously reported values of 92.—933 Ma for the volcanic rocks from the Cangshuipu Formation. Our new dating represents the lower boundary age of the Neoproterozoic System in the studied area. The younger age for the Cangshuipu volcanic rocks is supported by the following observations: （1） Lower Neoproterozoic strata （814—1000 Ma） are missing in the studied area; （2. the Nanhua rift system was initiated at about 82. Ma; and （3） an age of82. Ma may be taken as the lower boundary tim-ing of the Nanhua System （even Neoproterozoic） in South china.

Study on kinetics of hydrocarbon generation from coals in the Qinshui Basin

A new method for the quantitative assessment of hydrocarbon generation potential from coals by means of the chemical reaction kinetics has been developed gradually over the recent years. In this paper, the kinetic parameters of hydrocarbon gas generation are determined by high tem-perature and pressure, and closed- system thermal simula-tion for Late Paleozoic coals in the Qinshui Basin and the kinetic characteristics and the histories of hydrocarbon gas generation were studied using the parameters obtained. Re-sults show that during the longer period from the Triassic (T) to the Middle Jurassic (J2., the coal-derived methane yield increased more slowly under lower palaeogeotemperature in the Qinshui Basin; however, the shorter period from Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous, the coal-derived methane yield increased more rapidly under higher palaeogeotemperature. The correlation between the thermal simulation and the fac-tual data shows that C1/ (C1+C2.4) coefficients computed by the histories of methane and C2.C4 hydrocarbon generation can provide evidence for the identification of the genesis of coal bed gas in the different areas of the Qinshui Basin. The kinetic simulating experiment of hydrocarbon generation for the peat considered as the original matter of coal formation was performed for the first time and the simulated results were compared with the characteristics of hydrocarbon gen-eration from coals undergoing various palaeogeotemperature in the Qinshui Basin. The result indicates that the peat has a higher potential of hydrocarbon generation than that of coals. Therefore, the hydrocarbon generation results obtained from kinetic simulation for coal with higher maturation rank could not stand for their original hydrocarbon generation potential and thus would lead to an underestimation for coal-bed gas resource. Rheological properties of polyphase rocks play an important role in the dynamics of the lithosphere and asthenosphere. However, such fundamental issues have not been well resolved. A theoretical analysis has been made to develop expressions for the flow laws of polyphase rocks in terms of the volume fractions and flow laws of their constituent phases. The flow strengths predicted by the proposed model for common crustal and upper mantle rocks such as granite, diorite, diabase and lherzolite, and for synthetic two phase composites such as forsterite enstatite and water ice ammonia dehydrate aggregates are in good agreement with previously determined experimental values. The proposed theoretical model allows one to calculate, to the first approximation, the flow laws of a large number of polyphase rocks at geologic conditions based on the experimentally determined flow laws of a relatively small number of monomineralic aggregates.

Trace element characteristics and origin of intergranular components in mantle peridotites

Leaching experiment has been carried out on mantle xenoliths with different petrographic features in order to directly characterize the nature of intergranular components. ICP-MS analyses of leachates show that they are characterized by high LREE concentrations with strong depletion of Ta. The total REE contents and whether the negative Rb, Ba and Nb anomalies are present or not in intergranular components are largely dependent upon the nature of mantle metasomatism experienced by its host rock. It is proposed that intergranular components may represent residues of small volume metasomatic melts.

Trace element geochemical characteristics of plants and their influence on the remote-sensing spectral properties in the North Jiangsu oil field

This paper presents the contents of 17 kinds of trace elements in plant leaf samples collected from 4 sections in the North Jiangsu oil field, and the dada on their visible-near infrared spectra. By comparing the results of the inner and outer oil-gas remote-sensing anomaly areas, the plant trace element composition, and the enrichment characteristics and their influence on the plant spectral properties are described. The results indicated that the plant leaves had very strong enrichment ability toward some elements such as Mg, Ca, K, Na, Fe, Al, Mn, V, Zn and Cr. The plant leaves from the oil-gas abnormal areas were enriched in trace elements of the Fe-series, but depleted in alkali and alkali-earth metal elements. The plant trace elements had a strong influence on the 'blue-shift' strength and the reflectance of visible bands. And the ratios between Fe, Co and K, Na, Cd, Cu, Ba are the effective remote-sensing oil-indicating factors of plant trace elements. plant trace element, geochemistry, remote
